Do Not Disturb (DND) on Xiaomi smartphones is a tool that helps turn off all notifications, calls and signals when you need to focus, relax or just be quiet. However, many users face confusion: how to properly configure access to this feature, why it sometimes does not work or, conversely, blocks important alerts. In this article, we will analyze all the nuances of DND mode on Xiaomi devices (including models on MIUI and the new HyperOS), explain the difference between “normal” and “extended” modes, and show how to add exceptions for individual contacts or applications.
Xiaomi is a big part of the way that it often changes the configurations depending on the firmware version. For example, MIUI 14 has one path to the function, and HyperOS 1.0 has another one. We have compiled the current instructions for all modern versions, including hidden features that are not mentioned in the official manuals. You will also learn how to get around the limitations of the “Do Not Disturb” mode if it suddenly stopped working after the update, and what to do if important notifications do not pass the exception settings.
What is the “Do Not Disturb” mode on Xiaomi and why you need it
DND (or Do Not Disturb) is a system tool that temporarily mutes all audio and visual alerts on a smartphone, and unlike full silent mode, you can flexibly configure which notifications will be blocked and which will not.
- 📵 Turn off all calls and SMS, except for selected contacts.
- 🔔 Dim notifications from messengers, but leave the alarm clock.
- 🕒 Start schedule (for example, overnight or during work meetings).
- 🎵 Allow music playback but block system alerts.
Xiaomi’s DND mode is more integrated than many other Android devices, for example, there’s a separate vibration setting (you can turn it off completely or leave it only for calls), as well as the ability to create multiple profiles with different rules (for example, “Work”, “Sleep”, “Driving”). In addition, HyperOS has a feature called “Smart DND”**, which automatically turns on the mode when you connect your smartphone to charging for the night.
It's important to understand that Do Not Disturb is not the same as flight mode or energy saving, and unlike them, DND doesn't shut down communications (calls and the Internet are still running), it only filters alerts, making it the perfect solution for situations where you need to stay connected, but without excessive noise.
How to turn on and off “Do not disturb” on Xiaomi: step-by-step instructions
How to turn on DND mode depends on the firmware version of your Xiaomi, below are the current ways for MIUI 12-14 and HyperOS.

- Slap on the item Do not disturb.
- Activate the switch at the top of the screen.
- (Optional) Press the Schedule to set up automatic time-on.

⚠️ Note: Some Xiaomi models (e.g. Redmi Note 12 or X-ray) POCO X5) After upgrading to HyperOS function DND It can be reset when you reboot. This is a firmware bug -- check for updates in Settings. → The phone. → Updating the system.
Difference Between “Do Not Disturb” and “Quiet Mode” on Xiaomi
Many users confuse DND with Silent Mode, which are actually two different tools with different features:
| Function | "Do Not Disturb" (DND) | "Quiet mode" |
|---|---|---|
| 🔔 Notification sounds | Blocked (exceptions can be configured) | Shut down completely. |
| 📞 Calls. | Blocked (can be allowed for select persons) | The sound is off, but the call is coming. |
| ⏰ Alarm clock | It works (unless manually disabled) | It's working. |
| 🎵 Music/video | The sound is played (unless switched off) | Sound is being played. |
| ⚙️ Flexibility of settings | High (exclusions, schedule, profiles) | Minimum (switching off sound only) |
When to use "Do Not Disturb":
- 😴 For the night, not to wake up from notifications, but to get an important call.
- 💼 At work – not to be distracted by messengers, but to see notifications from the mail.
- 🚗 Driving to focus on the road, but to hear the navigator.
When Quiet Mode is Enough:
- 📵 If you just want to remove the sound, but don’t block notifications.
- 🎬 In a movie or theater where no sound is allowed.
💡
On Xiaomi with HyperOS, you can quickly switch between modes by holding the volume button, and a menu will appear with a choice: “Sound”, “Vibration”, “No Sound” and “Do not disturb”.
How to set exceptions: calls, notifications, alarms
The main advantage of Do Not Disturb is that you can flexibly adjust exceptions, like allowing family calls, work email notifications, or alarm clocks, and how to do that.
Exceptions for calls and messages:
- Go to Settings → Sound and Vibration → Do Not Disturb → Exceptions (or Settings → Notifications → Do Not Disturb → Rules in HyperOS).
- Select Calls or Messages.
- Please indicate from whom to allow notifications: 📞 All contacts - any call will be made. ⭐ Selected contacts - only from the list "Favorites». 🔄 Repeated calls – if one person calls twice within 3 minutes, the call will pass.
Exceptions for notifications:
- In the same Exclusions section, select Notifications from Applications.
- Tap on Add App and select the ones you want to receive alerts from (for example, WhatsApp, Telegram, Gmail).
- (Optional) Set notification priority – some apps can be made “important” and their alerts will show up even in DND mode.
If you upgrade from MIUI to HyperOS, we recommend:
- Make a backup of DND settings (if possible).
- After updating manually reconfigure exceptions – they can reset.
