You open the ZENLI app on your Xiaomi smartphone, but instead of the usual interface, you see an annoying notification: "Change location settings." The app refuses to work, and rebooting the device does not help. What is it and how to return access to the service without losing data?
This error is typical for MIUI 12-14 users, especially after system updates or region changes. The reason is the conflict between ZENLI geolocation permissions and Xiaomi's security policies. 80% of the time, the problem is solved in 5 minutes without going to the service center. In this article, we will discuss all the working methods, from basic to advanced, taking into account the features of firmware and smartphone models.
Important: If you use custom firmware (e.g. Pixel Experience or LineageOS), some of the methods may not work due to modified geolocation services, and then look at the alternatives section.
Why does ZENLI require you to change your location settings?
The ZENLI application (formerly known as ZINLI) actively uses geolocation data to:
- ๐ Targeted Advertising โ Shows offers based on your region
- ๐ Account Security โ blocks access when a suspicious location change occurs
- ๐ฎ Regional Features โ Some games and streams are only available in certain countries.
An error occurs when:
- System permissions for ZENLI have lost after the MIUI update.
- Geolocation services are disabled at the system level or for a specific application.
- The region of the device in the settings does not coincide with the actual location;
- VPN or proxy masks your real IP- address.
- The application cache is damaged (up to date after forced update).
For example, if you travel and turn on Flight Mode and then forget to return your geolocation settings, ZENLI may block access until configuration fixes, and the error often appears in users who have changed region to Settings โ Additional โ Language and region to access foreign app stores.
Method 1: Verification of permissions for ZENLI in MIUI
The first thing you need to do is make sure that the app is allowed to use geolocation, and in MIUI, these settings are hidden deeper than in pure Android.
Instructions:
- Open Settings โ Applications โ Application Management;
- Find ZENLI in the list (use search if there are many apps);
- Slip it on the Permit.
- Make sure the switch opposite Location is active and set to Always (not only during use!)
- Scroll down and check if the storage and phone permissions are disabled, which indirectly affect the operation of geoservices.
If the location permission is already on but the error persists, try turning it off and back on again, this will reset the permission cache. Also note the optional permissions in the same menu: sometimes ZENLI requires access to Background activity to work properly.
Make sure location is included for the application|Check the "Always" mode (not "Only during use")|Activate background activity|Reboot the smartphone after the changes-->
Method 2: Setup of Geolocation System Services
If the permissions are fine but ZENLI is still swearing, the problem could be Xiaomi's global geolocation settings.Unlike other manufacturers, MIUI has an extra service management layer.
How to check:
- Go to Settings โ Communication and Network โ Location;
- Activate the main switch Location;
- Slip on Mode and select High Accuracy (Uses GPS, Wi-Fi and mobile networks);
- Go back and open the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Scanner โ both must be enabled.
- Scroll down to Recent Location Requests and make sure ZENLI is on the list.
An important caveat: some MIUI 13/14 firmware has a bug where the geolocation service automatically shuts down after rebooting.
- ๐ Turn off battery optimization for ZENLI in Settings โ Battery โ Battery Optimization;
- ๐ฑ Add the application to autorun in Settings โ Applications โ Autorun;
- ๐ Lock the application in memory (to do this, hold the ZENLI icon in multitasking and select the lock icon).
๐ก
If the battery goes down faster after turning on high accuracy, return to the "Battery Saving" mode after successfully logging into ZENLI. Geolocation can be turned off immediately after authorization.
Method 3: Resetting regional settings
The error often appears after manually changing the device region (for example, to install apps from another country's Google Play).ZENLI is tied to the Xiaomi region, and if they don't match, a conflict arises.
How to fix it:
- Open Settings โ Additional โ Language and Region;
- Check which region is listed in the Region (not to be confused with language!)
- If the region is different from your real country, change it to the right one.
- Reboot your smartphone.
Once you change region, you may need to re-authorize to Mi Account. If you use a VPN to bypass regional restrictions, temporarily disable it before logging into ZENLI. Some VPN servers (such as in Hong Kong or Singapore) are blocked by the application.
| Region in settings | Problem. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| China (China) | ZENLI wants to get a Chinese phone number | Change region to your country or use a VPN with local IP |
| India (India) | Limited access to certain functions | Establish a region of "USA" or "Europe" |
| Russia (Russia) | Blocking payments in the app | Change to "Kazakhstan" or "Belarus" (if you need rubles) |
| United States (United States) | Requires confirmation by SMS | Use a virtual number or change your region to your country |
If you bought a smartphone in China or on AliExpress with firmware for the Chinese market, changing the region may not work without fully unlocking the bootloader, in which case the only way out is to install global firmware through the Mi Flash Tool.
Method 4: Clearing the cache and data of ZENLI
A damaged cache is one of the most common causes of error, especially if youโve recently updated an app through APK or Google Play.
Step-by-step:
- Go to Settings โ Applications โ Application Management โ ZENLI;
- Press the Warehouse;
- Tap to Clear cache (this is safe, account data will not be deleted);
- If the error persists, click Clear Data (โ ๏ธ this will delete all local app settings, but will not affect your account).
- Restart the app.
Once the data is cleared, you may need to re-enter your login/password. If you don't remember the login details, use the recovery function via email or a linked phone number. In rare cases, ZENLI can block your account after the data is cleared, then you will have to contact support with proof of ownership.
What if ZENLI asks for a confirmation code after cleaning the data?
Method 5: Checking Date, Time, and Network
Incorrect time settings or a problematic Internet connection can cause authorization errors, which ZENLI mistakenly interprets as a geolocation problem.
What to check:
- โฐ Date and time: Network Auto Determination must be set to (Settings โ Additional โ Date and Time). If this setting is disabled, turn it on and restart the phone;
- ๐ Internet connection: switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data or vice versa. Some routers block Xiaomi geoservices;
- ๐ถ Network Mode: If you have Xiaomi with 5G support, try force-switching to 4G (settings โ SIM-maps and mobile networks โ Preferred network type).
If you are using a dual SIM- card, try temporarily disabling one of them โ sometimes conflict between operators leads to location failures. Also check if the Traffic Saving mode is activated in the SIM- card settings โ it can limit background activity of the ZENLI card.
๐ก
If after all the manipulations ZENLI still does not work, try to connect to another Wi-Fi network or use mobile Internet from another SIM- card.
Method 6: Reinstall ZENLI and alternative solutions
If none of these things work, the radical method is to reinstall the app completely, but there's a nuance here.
For the standard version of ZENLI:
- Remove the application through Settings โ Applications;
- Download the latest version from the official website zenli.com or from Google Play;
- Install APK by pre-allowing installation from unknown sources (Settings โ Applications โ Special Permissions โ Installation of Unknown Applications);
- Launch the application and go through authorization.
For users of custom firmware or Chinese versions of MIUI:
- ๐ฑ Install ZENLI through the Mi App Store (if available in your area)
- ๐ Use VPN with servers in Singapore or Hong Kong to bypass regional restrictions.
- ๐ ๏ธ Install a modified version of ZENLI (e.g., ZENLI Global) and can be found on forums like XDA Developers or 4PDA.
Warning: Modified APKs may contain malicious code. Check the file through VirusTotal and read forum reviews before installing it, and note that using unofficial versions can result in account locking.
๐ก
Before reinstalling, export data from ZENLI if possible. For example, screenshots of important chats or subscription information. Some versions of the app allow you to back up through Settings โ Account โ Backup.
What do you do if nothing helps?
If you have tried all the ways but the error remains, the reasons may be deeper:
โ ๏ธ Warning: Some Xiaomi models (e.g. Redmi Note 10 Pro or POCO X3 Pro) will experience a hardware failure of the GPS- module after upgrading to MIUI 14, in which case only flashing through the Fastboot or contacting the service center will help.
Additional steps:
- Check the GPS in other applications (e.g. Google Maps or Yandex.Maps) if geolocation doesnโt work everywhere, the module is a problem.
- Reverse to the previous version of MIUI via the Mi Flash Tool (instructions are available on Xiaomi Community);
- Contact ZENLI via official channels: ๐ง Email: support@zenli.com ๐ฌ Telegram: @ZENLI_Support_Bot ๐ Feedback form: zenli.com/support
