The appearance of the inscription βSafe modeβ in the corner of the screen of Xiaomi smartphone often takes the user by surprise, the device in this state works with limited functionality, disabling third-party applications and widgets. It is not a virus or a breakdown, but a special diagnostic tool of the Android operating system, designed to detect failures.
Sometimes the phone goes into this mode on its own because of a failure when updating or accidentally clamping the volume buttons during the turn on. Other times, the user activates it himself, wanting to remove the problematic application, but forgets to exit. It is easy to return the gadget to normal operation, if you know the correct algorithm for your version of the MIUI shell or HyperOS.
In this article, we will take a look at all the known ways to exit diagnostic mode, we will look at standard reboot methods, forced restarts and radical measures if the system is βhangβ, you will learn to distinguish between system notifications and real dangerous situations that require the intervention of the service center.
What is Safe Mode and Why It Is Enabled
Safe Mode is an operating system state where only the system applications and services necessary for the basic operation of the device are loaded, and all programs, launchers and widgets you install are temporarily blocked, which allows you to diagnose problems caused by third-party software without risking system damage.
On Xiaomi smartphones, this mode is most often activated by accident, for example, if you accidentally held down the volume button when you turned on the phone, and the cause may be a critical error of a recently installed application that the system automatically isolated to prevent data loss. The diagnostic mode does not delete your files, it only restricts access to them through third-party programs.
Sometimes users specifically turn on this feature to remove a virus or an app that prevents the phone from working properly. However, after removing the malicious code, many forget to exit, thinking that the phone has broken. In fact, it is enough to simply restart the device in the usual way to restore all functions.
β οΈ Warning: Staying in Safe Mode doesn't harm the battery or screen, but limits the functionality of the smartphone to a minimum.
Understanding the reason for entering diagnostic mode helps you find a solution faster, and if you just installed a new app before rebooting, chances are that the problem lies in the conflict of this particular software with the Android system.
Method 1: Standard Reboot of the Device
The easiest and most effective way to get out of safe mode on any Xiaomi smartphone is to simply reboot. 90% of the time, the system automatically knows that the user wants to return to normal mode, and the next time it starts, it downloads all services.
In the menu that appears, select "Switch off" or "Reset." If the menu does not appear due to the interface lock, just hold the power button for about 10-15 seconds. The screen will go out and the device will start the cycle. It is important not to touch the volume buttons at this point, so that you do not activate the diagnostic mode again.
When you have a Mi or Xiaomi logo, release the button. Wait for the desktop to load full. If the Safe Mode label is gone, the problem is solved. If the label is still there, try repeating the procedure again, making sure the buttons are not stuck or clamped with a case.

Before rebooting, remove the protective case to make sure it doesnβt press the volume buttons, which is often the reason for spontaneously entering debugging mode.
This method works on all firmware versions, from the old MIUI 10 to the latest HyperOS. It is data-safe and does not require a connection to a computer.
Method 2: Forced Reset buttons
If the standard menu doesn't respond or the phone freezes, you need to perform a forced reboot. This method simulates battery extraction and causes the hardware of the smartphone to restart at a low level. On Xiaomi devices, this is done by holding the power button for a long time.
Press the power button and hold it continuously for a period of time. 20-30 The screen can blink, go out, then the logo reappears, and the key is to keep the button on until you see the brand logo, and this method helps shake the system up if a software failure has blocked the normal commands.
In some models with a non-removable battery, the combination may be different. Try to press the Power and Volume+ buttons for 15 seconds at the same time. If that doesn't work, repeat with the Volume- button. Be careful: a long-term downward clamping of volume just might turn on Safe Mode again, so keep your finger strictly on power.
βοΈ Forced reboot algorithm
After this reboot, the phone should start as normal, and if the system resets you back to safe mode, then the problem lies deeper β perhaps corrupted system files or there is a conflict at the driver level.
Method 3: Disconnect via Settings (for advanced)
In some MIUI shells, it is possible to manage startup modes through hidden menus or developer settings, although there is usually no direct button βStop Safe Modeβ in the interface.
Go to Settings β Advanced Settings β Developer. If you have USB debugging or other experimental features enabled, try temporarily disabling them. Sometimes active ADB profiles can interfere with normal loading. Find the item associated with the debugging mode and make sure it is not active.
Also, check the Apps section. Find newly installed programs that may have caused conflict. Even in Safe Mode, you can delete recently downloaded software. Go to Settings β Apps β All apps, find a suspicious object, and click Delete.
If you can't find the developer's settings, you need to activate them. Go to About Phone and quickly click 7 times on either MIUI Version or OS Version. After that, a new section will appear on the menu where you can reset the debugging settings.
β οΈ Warning: Do not change the settings in the Developer Menu unless you are sure of their purpose. This can lead to unstable system operation after leaving safe mode.
Using this method is advisable if the reboot does not help and you suspect that some application is blocking the normal start of the system.
Method 4: Resetting settings to factory
If none of the previous methods worked, and the phone persists in returning to safe mode, the system files may have been damaged, leaving a radical but effective method: a complete data reset.
Before starting the procedure, make sure that the battery is over 50%. Go to Settings β About Phone β Reset. Select βErase All Data.β The phone will restart and begin the cleaning process. After that, it will turn on as a new one, without safe mode.
If the menu is not available, you can reset via Recovery Menu. Turn off the phone completely. Shut down Power and Volume+ at the same time. When the logo appears, release the power, but keep the volume up until the Recovery menu appears. Select the language (English/Chinese) and press Wipe Data β Wipe All Data.
What to do if you forget your Mi Account password after resetting?
Once the reset is complete, the phone will restart. The initial setup process will take a few minutes. Safe mode should disappear forever, as all potential causes of conflict will be removed.
Table: Comparison of methods of exiting Safe Mode
To make it easier for you to choose the right method, we have prepared a method comparison table that will help you assess the risks and the time it takes for each solution to the problem.
| Method | Data security | Implementation time | Efficiency |
|---|---|---|---|
| A normal reboot. | 100% saved | 1-2 minutes | High (90%) |
| Forced restart | 100% saved | 1 minute | High (85%) |
| Deletion of applications | Data saved | 5-10 minutes | Medium (depending on the cause) |
| Full reset (Hard Reset) | Data deleted | 15-30 minute | Maximum (100%) |
As you can see from the table, you should always start with the simplest methods that do not carry the risk of loss of information, only if they do not work, you should move to more serious measures.
Why Safe Mode is turned on over and over again
There are times when the phone goes out of safe mode, but the next time it restarts, it goes back into it, which indicates that there is a persistent software conflict, and most often the culprit is a system update that has got "curved", or damage to the cache partition.
Try clearing the system cache. This will require logging into the Recovery menu (as described in the reset section). Select Wipe Data β Wipe Cache (not to be confused with Wipe All Data!) This will delete temporary files that may cause a download error, but will save your personal data.
Another reason is a physical malfunction of the buttons, and if the volume button is stuck inside the case or oxidized, the phone reads the safe mode entry signal every time it turns on, and try tapping your finger gently on the button area or blowing it with compressed air.

If the phone cycles back into safe mode even after the cache is reset, hardware button failure or damage to the system partition of memory is likely.
In rare cases, the cause is a bootloader damage. If you've previously experimented with obtaining Root rights or installing custom firmware, it's possible that the bootloader files have been corrupted, and in this case, only flashing through the computer using the Mi Flash Tool utility will help.
β οΈ Warning: If after all the software methods the problem persists, do not disassemble the phone yourself.
