Why Xiaomi smartphones make sound when shooting and can it be removed?
The sound of a camera shutter on Xiaomi, Redmi or POCO is not just a design decision, but a consequence of local laws in some countries (such as Japan or South Korea), where the mandatory clicking of a photo is intended to prevent hidden shooting. However, for most users, this sound becomes annoying, especially in quiet places or when shooting videos. Fortunately, the manufacturer provides several ways to turn it off, both through standard settings and through hidden MIUI features.
Itβs important to understand that not all methods work on all models. For example, the Xiaomi 13 Pro or Redmi Note 12 with MIUI 15 may require a different approach than older devices with MIUI 12. In this article, we will look at current ways for firmware 2023-2026, including workarounds for regions where sound is blocked at the software level. If you find that the option to turn off the sound simply is not on the menu, do not be upset: most likely, one of the alternative methods below will help you.
Before you start, make sure that your device has the latest version of the Camera app installed. Sometimes the shutter sound appears due to bugs in older versions of the software, you can update it via Google Play or GetApps (for Chinese firmware).
Method 1: Turning off sound through camera settings (official method)
The easiest and safest way to do this is to use the Camera app's built-in settings, which runs on most MIUI 14/15 global firmware, but may not be available in regional versions for Japan or Korea.
- Open the Camera app on your Xiaomi.
- Touch the gears. βοΈ in the upper right corner to open the settings.
- Scroll down to the Camera Sounds section (or Sound & Vibration in English).
- Switch the slider Shutter sound to the off position.
If there is no such item, your firmware is hiding it, in which case move on to the next one. Also note that on some models (e.g. POCO F5), sound may be linked to system sounds, and then turning it off will affect other notifications.
β οΈ Note: On devices with Chinese firmware (China) ROM) This item may not be available even after switching the region, and you may need to install a global or European version. MIUI.
Method 2: Use the "No Sound" or "Do Not Disturb" mode
If the camera settings don't have a separate shutter switch, you can use Android system tools, which temporarily shuts down all the sounds on the device, including the camera click, but doesn't require root rights or firmware changes, and is suitable for emergency situations where you need to take a picture of something unobtrusively.
Algorithm of action:
- π Activate Do Not Disturb (swipe down the notification panel) β cross-bell).
- π΅ Or turn on No Sound mode (volume button down to stop).
- πΈ Take a photo - the sound of the shutter will not sound.
The disadvantage of the method is that it turns off other sounds (alarm clocks, notifications), so it is only suitable for one-time shooting. For a permanent solution, it is better to combine this method with others (for example, turning off the camera sounds in ADB).
π‘
If you need to turn off the sound only for the camera, but save notifications, use Focus Mode in Settings β Special features. It silences all sounds except media and alarm clocks.
Method 3: Disconnect via ADB (for advanced users)
If standard methods donβt work, you can use Android Debug Bridge (ADB), a low-level system management tool that doesnβt require root rights, but involves connecting your smartphone to your computer. It works on most Xiaomi devices with MIUI 12-15, including the Redmi Note 11, POCO X4 and others.
Step-by-step:
- Turn on USB Debugging on your phone: Settings β About Phone β MIUI Version (click 7 times to unlock the developer menu) Settings β Additional β For Developers β Debugging over USB (On)
- Connect your phone to your PC and confirm your trust in your computer.
- Download ADB Tools and unpack the archive.
- Open the command prompt (cmd) in the adb.exe folder and type: adb shell settings put global camera_shutter_sound_enabled 0
- Reboot the phone.
Once you've done the command, the shutter sound should disappear. To get it back, use the same command, replacing 0 with 1.
β οΈ Note: Some firmware (e.g. China) ROM) This command may not work because of manufacturer limitations, and you'll need a customized Recovery or modified firmware.
Install Xiaomi drivers on PC
Enable debugging over USB on your phone
Download ADB Tools from the official website
Connect your phone to your PC using the original cable-->
Method 4: Install a third-party camera (Google Camera, Open Camera)
If system methods don't work, you can completely replace the standard Camera app with an alternative, and popular options are Google Camera (GCam) or Open Camera, which not only disable the shutter sound, but often offer better shooting quality thanks to advanced processing algorithms.
How to install and configure:
- π± Download. APK-GCam file (e.g., version from the BSG or Urnyx05 for your model from the Celso Azevedo forum.
- π§ Install the file by allowing installation from unknown sources (Settings) β Annexes β Special access β Installation of unknown applications).
- ποΈ Open GCam, go to Settings β Sound. β Shutter sound and turn it off.
Advantages of the method:
- β It works on all kinds of firmware, including China. ROM.
- β Some Xiaomi models may not support all of the GCam features (e.g., the telephoto lens on the Redmi Note 10).
| Annex | Xiaomi support | Shutting down the sound | Additional functions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Camera | Yes (compatible version needed) | Yes. | Night Sight, HDR+, portrait |
| Open Camera | Yes (universal) | Yes. | Manual settings, RAW |
| Footej Camera | Yes. | Yes. | 4K video, timelapse |
Method 5: Change the firmware region (for power users)
On some Xiaomi devices, the shutter sound is tightly tied to the firmware region, for example, on Japanese or Korean versions of MIUI, it cannot be turned off by standard methods, in which case changing the system region to global (Global) or European (EEA) will help.
How to do this:
- Download the firmware for your model with the regional Global or EEA tag from the Xiaomi Firmware Updater website.
- Rename the file to update.zip and place it in the root folder of the phone.
- Go to Settings β About the phone β System update.
- Click on the three dots in the upper right corner β Select a firmware file.
- Select update.zip and wait for the installation to be completed.
Once the region is changed, the shutter sound can be turned off through the camera's standard settings, but this method resets all the data on the phone, so back up first!
β οΈ Note: Incorrect firmware can cause the device to break. Make sure you download the file specifically for your model (e.g. Redmi Note 12). 5G β Redmi Note 12 Pro).
What to do if the firmware is not installed?
Frequent problems and solutions
Even after all the methods are applied, users sometimes find that the shutter sound remains, and consider typical situations and ways to solve them:
- π The sound comes back after the reboot. ADB The solution is to repeat the command or set the task in Tasker for automatic application after switching on.
- π΅ There's no "Shut Sound" in the settings. Reason: regional restrictions. Solution: change firmware to Global or use GCam.
- π« ADB The reason is, you've got a kernel-level lockdown, so the solution is to get root rights or use Magisk modules.
If none of the methods worked, check:
- π± Compatibility of your model with the selected method (for example, POCO M6 Pro may require other teams ADB, Xiaomi 12T).
- π Update to the latest version (update to the latest version) MIUI).
- π οΈ Custom modifications (if the phone was sewn informally, the sound could be sewn into the system).

On devices with HyperOS (new software from Xiaomi), the shutter sound is turned off similarly to MIUI, but you may need to update the Camera app to version 7.0+.
