Are you trying to record a video for TikTok, Instagram Reels or YouTube Shorts, but background noise spoils the frame? Or do you need to shoot a video without sound for a presentation, screencast or archive? On Xiaomi Redmi smartphones, turning off the microphone while shooting is not as obvious as it seems: there is no separate button for this in the standard Camera app. But there are at least 5 working ways - from hidden MIUI settings to third-party applications.
In this article you will find:
- π Step-by-step instructions for all versions MIUI (including MIUI 14/15 HyperOS)
- π± Comparison of methods on speed, quality and convenience
- β οΈ Common mistakes that make the sound sound sound sound sound
- π οΈ Solutions for Older Models (Redmi) 4/5/Note 5 etc.)
Important: Some methods require superuser rights (root) or the installation of additional applications. We have marked these methods with special marks - read carefully!
1. Disable the sound through the settings of the Xiaomi camera (official way)
The easiest method is to use the Camera app's built-in options. It works on most Redmi models (from the Redmi Note 7 to the Redmi Note 13 Pro+), but may not be available on budget devices or older versions of MIUI.
Instructions:
- Open the Camera app.
- Switch to Video Mode (swipe down or tap on the caption Photo).
- Click on the icon. βοΈ Settings (usually in the upper right corner).
- Find the video sound or sound recording item and turn off the slider.
- Return to the shooting, and the video will be recorded without sound.
β οΈ Attention: On some firmware (MIUI 12.5 and below) this setting can be reset after the phone is restarted!
Is the camera open in video mode?
Is the sound off in the settings?
Is there enough free space on the phone?
Are background applications using the microphone closed?-->
If your MIUI version does not have such a clause, move on to the next method.
2.Using No Sound (DND) Mode during Shooting
Little-known life hack: Xiaomi Redmi allows you to temporarily disable all system sounds, including recording from the microphone, through Do Not Disturb (DND) mode. This method works on all models without exception, but has a nuance: it blocks all notifications and calls.
How to do this:
- Activate Do Not Disturb: Swipe down from the top edge of the screen to open the notification bar. π Don't disturb and tap it. Select until you manually shut it down.
Camera.
Be sure to turn off the DND
| Advantages | Deficiencies |
|---|---|
| It works on all Redmi models. | Block notifications and calls |
| Does not require root or third-party applications | It may be lost after the reboot. |
| Maintains video quality | Not suitable for long-term shooting |
π‘ Useful tip: If you need to switch between modes often, add the Do Not Disturb widget to the home screen. β Widgets β Find it. Don't disturb it.
3. Shooting through screen recording (without microphone)
If you want to record what's happening on your phone's screen (like gameplay, app work, or video from the Internet), you can use the built-in Screen Recording feature. Unlike the camera, the default audio is turned off, but you can manually turn it on.
Step-by-step:
- Swipe down from the top edge of the screen to open the notification bar.
- Find the icon. πΉ Screen recording (if not, tap it) βοΈ Edit and add it to the panel).
- Click on the icon and confirm the start of the recording.
- By default, the microphone is off β donβt turn it on!
- Once completed, the recording will be saved to the gallery in the ScreenRecordings folder.
π How to install and configure (in the example of Open Camera):
- Download Open Camera from Google Play.
- Open the app and allow access to the camera and microphone (yes, this is necessary for work, but we will manually turn off the sound).
- Tap it on. βοΈ Settings β Other camera settings.
- Find the item Record the sound and uncheck the tick.
- Return to the shooting, and the video will be recorded without sound.
β οΈ Note: Some apps (like Footage) require payment to unlock the full functionality.

5. disabling the microphone at the system level (for advanced users)
If you need to block all microphone access for all applications (including the camera), you can use:
- π§ ADB-teams (without root)
- π‘οΈ Permission management applications (e.g. App Ops)
- π Root access (to completely shut down the microphone)
πΉ The method without root (through ADB):
- Connect your phone to your PC and enable USB Debugging (Settings β About Phone β MIUI Version β 7 times tap on version β go back to Additional Settings β For Developers).
- Download ADB Tools and open the command line in the folder with adb.exe.
- Enter the command: adb shell pm revoke com.android.camera android.permission.RECORD_AUDIO (Replace com.android.camera with your camera app package if you use a third-party camera app).
- Reboot the phone.
β οΈ Warning: This method turns off the microphone for the camera forever until you return the permission to the team:
adb shell pm grant com.android.camera android.permission.RECORD_AUDIOUse it only if you are confident in your actions.
π‘
ADB-commands are the most reliable way to turn off sound permanently, but require a PC connection and command line knowledge.
Comparison of methods: which one to choose?
To make it easier for you to determine, we have compiled a comparative table:
| Method | Difficulty | Required. root/ADB | Suitable for | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Camera settings | β | β No. | All models (except the old ones) | Maybe drop off. |
| DND regime | β | β No. | Short-term photography | Blocking notifications |
| Screen recording | ββ | β No. | Screen recording. | Not suitable for real photography. |
| Third-party annexes | ββ | β No. | All models. | Maybe an ad. |
| ADB/Root | βββ | β Yes. | Advanced users | Hard to cancel. |
π‘ Recommendation: For most Xiaomi Redmi users, camera settings (method 1) or Open Camera (method 4) are best. If you want to record a screen, use the built-in feature (method 3).
