Recording animated images (GIFs) on Xiaomi smartphones has become easier thanks to built-in MIUI features and third-party apps. However, many users still do not know how to properly create a GIF from a video or frame sequence without losing quality. In this article, we will discuss all the current methods, from standard tools to professional solutions for models Redmi Note 12, POCO X5, Xiaomi 13 and others.
The MIUI feature is that GIF recording functionality can vary depending on the firmware version and regional build, for example, MIUI 14 Global has a hidden option in the camera menu, while MIUI 15 China doesnβt have one at all, instead using a separate Quick Apps app. Weβve taken into account all the nuances and prepared universal instructions that will be suitable even for older models like the Redmi 9A or POCO M3.
1. Built-in GIF recording via Xiaomi camera
The easiest way is to use the standard Camera app, which is available on most devices with MIUI 12 and later, but its location varies. On new models (Xiaomi 14, Redmi Note 13 Pro+), the option is called βMoving Photosβ, and on older ones (POCO X3, Redmi 10) can be hidden under the name βLive Photoβ or βGIFβ.
To find her:
- π± Open the Camera app and switch to Photo mode (not Video"!).
- π In the top toolbar, find the icon "β‘" (additional regimes) or βMore".
- π¬ Select "Moving Photo" (or "GIF" older versions).
- πΉ Press the shutter button β the camera will record a 3-second video, which will automatically save as GIF gallery.
β οΈ Note: On some models (POCO F4, Redmi K50) The recording is limited to a maximum of 5 seconds. If you need longer, use third-party apps.
The finished GIF will be saved in the DCIM β Camera β MovingPhotos folder (or GIF on older devices), which is usually 720p resolution and a frame rate of 15 FPS, which is enough for instant messengers, but not suitable for professional use.
2.Creating a GIF from a video in the Xiaomi Gallery
If you already have a video you want to make a GIF from, use the Gallery's built-in editor, which works on all devices with MIUI 11 and later, including the Redmi 12 and the POCO X6 Pro. The main advantage is that you can select any video fragment and adjust the playback speed.
Step-by-step:
- Open the Gallery app and select the desired video.
- Slip on the Edit icon (scissors) in the bottom panel.
- Go to the GIF tab (on some devices it is called Animation).
- Move the sliders to select the initial and final frames (maximum 10 seconds).
- Set the speed (from 0.5x to 2x) and press Save.
| Parameter | MIUI 14/15 | MIUI 11-13 |
|---|---|---|
| Max. duration of the GIF | 10 seconds. | 5 seconds |
| Permission | Up to 1080p (compression) | Up to 720p. |
| Frequency of personnel | 15β24 FPS | 12β15 FPS |
| Sound support | No. | No. |
β οΈ Note: If the video is longer than 1 minute, the gallery may freeze while processing. GIPHY or ImgPlay.
The finished GIF will be saved in the Pictures β GIF folder. It can be sent immediately to Telegram, WhatsApp or VK, but additional compression may be required for Instagram Stories.
3. Applications for recording GIFs on Xiaomi
If the built-in tools donβt work (for example, you need to record a GIF longer than 10 seconds or with sound), use third-party applications. We tested 5 popular solutions and selected the best ones for Xiaomi:
- π₯ GIPHY Cam β supports up to 30 seconds of recording, there are filters and stickers.
- πΌοΈ ImgPlay β Convert video to video GIF There's a "Return" option".
- π¬ GIF Maker β allows you to combine several videos into one GIF and add.
- π± Screen Recorder & GIF β recorder GIF (It is useful for gamers on Black Shark).
To install, go to Google Play and type in the name of the app. Once installed, grant permissions to access the Camera, Microphone (if you need sound) and Warehouse.
Clear gallery cache |Close background applications |Enable Do Not Disturb mode |Check free space (minimum 500 MB)|Deactivate battery optimization for the application-->
On Xiaomi models with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor (such as Xiaomi 13 Ultra), applications like the GIPHY Cam can record GIFs at up to 1080p resolution without significant lags. On budget devices (Redmi A2, POCO C50), it is recommended to limit 720p to avoid slowdowns.
4.Recording GIFs from Xiaomi screen
If you want to create a GIF from something that happens on the screen (such as a gameplay moment or a demonstration of how the application works), use a built-in screen recording followed by conversion. This method works on all devices with MIUI 12 and later.
Instructions:
- Add Screen Recording tile to the Quick Settings Panel (swipe down from the top edge of the screen β Edit).
- Click on the recording icon and select "Write" (some models require permission confirmation).
- After the recording is completed, the video will be saved to the Gallery β Screen recordings.
- Open the video in the Gallery and convert to GIF (see section 2).
For devices with older versions of MIUI (e.g. Redmi 8 or POCO F1), you will need to use third-party applications like AZ Screen Recorder or DU Recorder, as they have built-in export to GIF.
π‘
If screen recording is interrupted due to battery optimization, add the recording app to exceptions: Settings β Battery β Battery Optimization β All apps β select the app and disable optimization.
5. Optimizing GIFs for Social Media
The GIF created may be too big to send to messengers or publish on social networks, here's how to optimize it:
- π For Telegram: maximum size is 10 MB. Use compression in ImgPlay (quality 70%).
- π For Instagram Stories: Permission must be 1080Γ1920 (Cut it in CapCut.
- π¦ For Twitter (X): maximum size 15MB, duration 15 seconds.
- π¬ WhatsApp: 16MB limit, but it is recommended not to exceed 5MB for fast sending.
To reduce the size without loss of quality:
- Open GIFs in ImgPlay or EZGIF.com (online service).
- Reduce the resolution to 800Γ600 (for instant messengers enough).
- Reduce the frame rate to 10-12 FPS (this is almost invisible to the eye).
- Apply compression with a quality of 60-80%.
How to get around the limit on the duration of GIF in MIUI?
6 Solving problems with GIF recording
If the GIF is not recorded or stored with artifacts, check the following points:
| Problem. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| GIF is not retained | There's not enough memory space. | Clear the cache or transfer the files to SD-map |
| The record is cut off. | Optimizing the battery | Add the app to the exceptions (Settings β Battery) |
| Poor quality | Automatic compression in MIUI | Use ImgPlay with manual settings |
| No sound. | Limitation of formats | First save the video with sound, then convert. |
Devices with MediaTek Helio (e.g. Redmi 10A or POCO C40) may freeze when processing long GIFs.
- π Restart your phone before recording.
- ποΈ Close all background applications.
- π± Use lightweight applications (for example, GIF Me! Camera).
π‘
On devices with 3-4 GB of RAM (for example, Redmi 9 or POCO M4 Pro) for stable recording of GIFs lasting more than 5 seconds, it is recommended to use third-party applications with a minimalist interface.
7. Alternative methods: online services and PC
If the smartphone doesnβt have enough processing power, you can create a GIF on your computer or through online services. This is true for Xiaomi users who have older models (Redmi 6, POCO F1) or insufficient memory.
Ways:
- π EZGIF.com β upload video from your phone to your website, trim and convert to GIF. Supports files up to 100MB.
- π» Photoshop - Importing Videos through File β Imports β Video footage into layers, then export to GIF.
- π¬ CapCut (PC version) β free editor with export to the Internet GIF.
To transfer files from Xiaomi to PC:
- Connect your phone via USB (select File Transfer mode).
- Copy the video into a folder on your computer.
- Please use one of the listed services.
- Move the finished GIF back to the DCIM folder on your phone.
The advantage of this method is that there are no restrictions on duration and quality, but you need a computer. For Xiaomi users with MIUI 15, there is another life hack: you can send a video to Google Drive, open it on a PC and convert it to GIF directly to Google Photos (Create Animation feature).
