Why Xiaomi Mi camera doesn’t connect to the new network and what to do about it
Changing Wi-Fi on Xiaomi Mi cameras (including Mi Home Security Camera 360°, Mi Home Camera 2K, Mi Camera PTZ, and others) is a common challenge that users face when moving, changing a router, or changing a provider. The problem is that the manufacturer has not provided an obvious “change network” item in the mobile application, which is why many try to reset the device to factory settings, losing all stored records and parameters.
In this article, we will discuss three official ways to reconfigure Wi-Fi without completely resetting, and also consider typical errors (for example, “failed to connect to the network” or “password incorrect”) that occur even with the correct data entry.
If your camera is released before 2020, some steps may differ - check the firmware version in the app. 1080p (2018 and older are all the methods described, and for new devices (for example, Xiaomi Smart Camera) C400) Simplified options for changing the network through QR-code.
Method 1: Change Wi-Fi via Mi Home (no reset)
The fastest method that works for most Xiaomi Mi cameras connected to your account is important: the device must be online (connected to the old network) at the time of reconfiguration.
Algorithm of action:
- 📱 Open the Mi Home app (or Xiaomi Home for European regions) and go to the Devices tab.
- 🔍 Find your camera in the list and tap its name to open the control panel.
- ⚙️ In the upper right corner, click on the icon. ⋮ (three dots) and select Device Settings.
- 🔄 Scroll down to the Wi-Fi block and click Change Network (or Change Access Point in older versions of the app).
- 📶 Select a new network from the list, enter a password and confirm the changes. The camera will reboot automatically.
If there is no Change Network, then your model does not support this method, in which case you can move to Method 2 or Method 3.
💡
Before changing Wi-Fi, check that the new network is operating in the 2.4 GHz band – most Xiaomi Mi cameras do not support 5 GHz. If your router broadcasts both networks under the same name (SSID), temporarily disable 5 GHz in the router settings.
Method 2: Reconnect via settings mode (with partial reset)
This method is suitable if the camera is not connected to the old network (for example, after moving) or if the application does not have the option to change Wi-Fi. You will need to manually transfer the device to the settings mode without losing the binding to the account.
Instructions:
- Turn off the camera power (remove the USB cable or adapter).
- Press the Reset button (usually located on the bottom panel or next to the power connector) and, holding it, connect the camera to the power.
- Hold the button for 5-7 seconds until you hear a voice message in Chinese or English: “Waiting for connection” (or flashing a yellow indicator).
- Release the button. The camera will go into setup mode, but it won't reset the account.
- In the Mi Home app, click + → Add device → Camera and follow the instructions by selecting your model.
In the process, the application will offer scanning QR-If the camera doesn't find a new network, check it:
- 📵 Is the phone’s mobile data disabled (they may interfere with the connection).
- 🔒 Is the password entered correctly (the registry is important!).
- 📡 Is the camera in the range of the router (no more than 2-3 meters at the time of setting up).

Method 3: Complete reset and reset (extremely)
If the first two methods fail, you will have to reset the camera hard and remove it from your account, which is guaranteed to help, but requires re-associating the device and possibly losing the recorded data (if it is stored on a memory card rather than in the cloud).
How to reset the Xiaomi Mi camera:
- Hold the Reset button for 10-15 seconds until the indicator flashes red or doubles.
- Wait for the reboot (the camera will make the sound "Device reset").
- In the Mi Home app, remove the camera from the device list (Device Settings → Delete).
- Add the camera again via + → Add the device by selecting your model.
After resetting the camera will be as new - you will need:
- 🔑 Tie her to an account. Mi/Xiaomi.
- 📡 Connect to a new Wi-Fi network.
- ⚙️ Device name and detection area (if supported).
What if the camera does not turn on after reset?

Common Wi-Fi Change Mistakes and How to Fix Them
Even if you follow instructions correctly, users often encounter errors.
⚠️ Warning: If the camera produces a “failed to connect to the network” error when you enter the correct password, the problem may be in the router settings» (AP Isolation) and temporarily deactivate the firewall.
Mistake 1: The camera is not finding a new network
- 🔌 Check that the router is on and broadcasting SSID (network name undisguised).
- 📶 Make sure the network is running in the 2.4GHz band (or 5GHz if the model supports it).
- 🔄 Reboot the router and camera.
Error 2: Password not accepted (authentication error)
- 🔑 Enter your password in the exact register (capital/line letters have a value!).
- 🚫 Make sure there are no Cyrillic characters or spaces in the password.
- 🔄 Change the type of network encryption to WPA2-PSK (router-setting).
Error 3: Camera connects to Wi-Fi but doesn't stream video
- 🌐 Check your phone’s connection to the same network (for local access).
- 🔌 Make sure that the Mi Home app has enabled Local Network mode».
- 📡 The router may be blocking camera traffic – add it MAC-address.
💡
If the camera is connected to the network but the app is displayed offline, try logging out of your Mi Home account and logging in again, often solving sync problems.
Additional settings after changing Wi-Fi
After successfully connecting to the new network, it is recommended to follow several steps to optimize the camera:
- Firmware Update: Go to Device Settings → Software Update and install the latest version. This will fix any possible connection bugs.
- Set up notifications: Enable traffic alerts in the Detection Settings section if they have been reset.
- Cloud Storage Check: Make sure that your cloud recording is not suspended (Cloud Storage section).
- Connection Test: Run Network Check in the camera settings to assess signal quality.
If you use a memory card to store local records, you may need to format it after you reset it from the Settings menu → Local Storage → Format. Attention: all data from the card will be deleted!
HomeKit-enabled cameras (e.g. Xiaomi Smart Camera) C400 into EU-After changing Wi-Fi, you will need to re-add the device to the Apple Home app:
- Remove the camera from HomeKit.
- In the Mi Home app, go to Device Settings → HomeKit and generate a new pairing code.
- Add a camera to Apple Home via scan QR-code.
