QR on the Mi 9, including hidden chips MIUI and workarounds for cases where the camera refuses to recognize codes.
Unlike today’s flagships, where the QR scanner is built into fast settings, the Mi 9 can be unpredictable, especially after system updates. We tested all methods on current versions of MIUI (including MIUI 14 and HyperOS) and found out which ones work stable and which require additional manipulation. If you encounter a “Code Impossible” error or simply can’t find the scan feature, read on.
1. Standard method: scanning through the application "Camera"
The most obvious method is to use the built-in Camera app. On the Xiaomi Mi 9, this feature works out of the box, but there are nuances:
- 🔍 Put the camera on QR-code so that it occupies at least 30% of the screen, otherwise the system will not recognize it.
- 📱 Make sure that Photo Mode is enabled (not Video or Portrait).
- 🔄 If the code is not scanned, tap the icon «QR» in the upper right corner of the camera screen (appears after focusing).
- 🚫 On some firmware, the function is disabled by default - check the camera settings (Settings) → Additionally. → Scanner. QR).
If nothing happens after getting stuck the camera over the code, try:
- Restart the Camera app (swipe up in the app menu).
- Clear the camera cache: Settings → Apps → App management → Camera → Clear the cache.
- Switch to the rear camera (front scanning QR is worse due to low resolution).

4. Alternative applications for QR scanning
If the built-in methods don’t work, install one of the proven applications:
| Annex | Advantages | Deficiencies | Reference |
|---|---|---|---|
| QR & Barcode Scanner (Gamma Play) | Quick recognition, scan history, working with corrupted codes | Advertising in the free version | Google Play |
| Kaspersky QR Scanner | Checks links to viruses, no advertising | Requires access to camera and internet | Google Play |
| Barcode Scanner (ZXing Team) | Open source, support for all code formats | Outdated interface | Google Play |
Before installation, check:

- 📌 Rating and reviews (avoid apps with a score below 4.0).
- 🔄 Updates (the application must be supported by the developer).
🔍 Look at the link in the preview (do not click if it is suspicious)
🔒 Use link-checking apps (like Kaspersky) QR Scanner)

- 🔧 Diagnostics of problems with the camera (if the scan photo works, but the live one does not, the camera software is to blame).
💡
If the QR scan through the gallery doesn’t work, upgrade the Gallery app to the latest version or use Google Photos (it has a built-in code scanner).
6.The solution to the problems: why the Mi 9 doesn't scan QR-code
If none of the methods worked, check for typical causes:
| Problem. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| The camera doesn't focus on the code | Contaminated lens or downed settings | Wipe the camera with a soft cloth, reset the settings of the Camera app |
| QR badge disappears from control panel | MIUI update resets settings | Add it back to Settings → Control Panel |
| There is an error in the scanning | Conflict with other applications (e.g. antivirus) | Run your phone in Safe Mode and try again. |
| QR-Screen codes are not recognized | Low frequency of source screen refresh | Ask to send the code as an image or increase the brightness of the source screen |
