Why screenshots on Redmi are not as easy as they seem
Xiaomi Redmi is famous for its price-performance ratio, but the MIUI interface sometimes baffles users โ especially when it comes to basic features. Screenshots (or โscreensโ) are needed by everyone to save important correspondence, fix an error in the application or share a funny meme. However, the standard method of button clamping does not work on all models equally, and alternative methods appear in new versions of MIUI, which many do not even know.
If you tried to take a screenshot of a Redmi Note 12 or Redmi 10C and you failed, don't rush to blame your smartphone. You may just be using the wrong method. In this article, we'll look at all the current ways to create screens on Xiaomi devices, including hidden features that are not even written about in the official documentation, and also find out why sometimes screenshots are not saved and how to fix it.
Method 1: Classic button combination (works on 99% of models)
The most versatile method that works on all Redmi smartphones โ from the budget Redmi A1 to the flagship Redmi K60 Pro. Here the main thing is the correct sequence of actions and the force of pressing.
You need to press two buttons at the same time:
- ๐ฑ Power button (on/off) โ usually located on the right.
- ๐ฝ Volume reduction button - on the same side end.
Hold them for 1-2 seconds until you hear the characteristic shutter sound of the camera and see the screen saving animation. On some models, the screen will blink for a split second, this is normal.
Make sure the buttons are not stuck and clean |
Fingers should not close the speaker or microphone.|
The screen is unlocked (you canโt screen on a locked screen)|
The sound is not turned off (otherwise you will not hear confirmation)

Important nuance: on Redmi with AMOLED-screens (for example, Redmi Note 11 Pro)+) Sometimes a phantom press is triggered because of a sensitive sensor, and if the screenshot is done by itself, check the cover or film on the screen.
โ ๏ธ Note: On models with a physical home button (e.g. Redmi) 4A) This method may not work. Instead of the volume button, use the home button" + power-up.
Method 2: Three-finger gesture (the fastest, but not on all firmware)
If you're tired of agonizing with buttons, MIUI 12 and later has a gesture-based way of taking screenshots, which works on most Redmis released after 2020, but requires pre-tuning.
To enable the function:
- Open Settings โ Special Features โ Gestures and Movements โ Screenshot with three fingers.
- Activate the switch.
- Select the gesture type: Swipe down or Touch and Hold (we recommend the first option).
Now, just swipe your three fingers across the screen from top to bottom, and you take a screenshot instantly, which is especially useful for Redmi with larger screens (6.5" or more), where it's hard to reach the buttons with one hand.

Pitfall: If you have an informal firmware installed (like Pixel Experience or LineageOS), this gesture may conflict with other features, in which case you have to choose one.
Method 3: Voice command (for those who like to talk)
Few people know, but Xiaomi Redmi has a Google Assistant that can take screenshots on command, which saves when hands are busy or buttons are not working.
The algorithm is simple:
- ๐ค Say, โOK Google, take a screenshotโ (or โTake a screenshot").
- ๐ฒ Confirm permission to access the screen (only when you first use it).
- ๐ผ๏ธ Screenshot will be saved in the gallery.
This method works even on a locked screen if the settings enable access to the Assistant from lock.
Why isn't the voice command working?
Bonus: If you have a Mi Assistant installed, try the "Mi, take a screenshot" command, but this option works worse and often requires repeated attempts.
Method 4: Quick settings panel (for lazy)
MIUI 13/14 has the ability to add a screenshot button directly into the notification curtain, eliminating the need to remember keyboard shortcuts or gestures.
How to set up:
- Swipe down from the top edge of the screen to open the notification bar.
- Click on the icon. โ๏ธ (Edit).
- Find a screenshot in the list and drag it to the active area.
Now, when swiping down, you just click on the new icon and the screenshot will be taken in a split second, which is ideal for Redmi with a weak processor (like Redmi 9A), where pressing the buttons can cause lags.
| Model Redmi | Support for screenshot panel | Minimum version of MIUI |
|---|---|---|
| Redmi Note 11/12 | โ Yes. | MIUI 13.0.4 |
| Redmi 10/10A | โ Yes, after the update) | MIUI 12.5.7 |
| Redmi 9/9C | โ No (manual installation required) | โ |
| Redmi K50/K60 | โ Yes. | MIUI 14.0.1 |
โ ๏ธ Note: On some firmware, after updating the icon, the screenshot disappears from the curtain. To return it, reset the notification bar settings in Settings โ Notifications โ Additionally. โ Resetting panel settings.
Method 5: Script with scrolling (for long pages)
If you need to save not only the visible part of the screen, but also what is below (for example, the entire chat in Telegram or a long web page), Redmi has a scrolling screenshot feature. It does not work in all applications, but covers 80% of cases.
How to take a long screenshot:
- ๐ฑ First, take a regular screenshot of any of the above methods.
- ๐ Immediately after the thumbnail appears at the bottom of the screen, click on it.
- ๐ In the editor that opens, tap the Scrolling icon (or Long Screenshot).
- โ The screen will automatically scroll down, capturing the content. Click Ready when you capture the desired snippet.
This feature does not work in banking applications, some games and screens with the DRM-protection (e.g. Netflix or Disney)+).
๐ก
If a long screenshot is cropped in the wrong place, try scrolling the page manually before fixing. Sometimes the MIUI algorithm fails to automatically define content boundaries.
Where are screenshots stored and what to do if they are not saved
By default, all screenshots on Redmi are saved in the folder: /storage/emulated/0/Pictures/Screenshots/
or
Gallery โ Albums โ Screenshots
If you use Google Photos, they are also automatically uploaded to the cloud (if sync is enabled).
If screenshots are not saved, check:
- ๐ Free space: the system partition must be at least 500 MB free.
- ๐ง Permissions: Open Settings โ Annexes โ gallery โ Permits and make sure access to the storage is allowed.
- ๐ Cash: Clear the Gallery and Screenshots app cache (if any).
- ๐ ๏ธ Updates: on some Redmis after updating to MIUI 14 screenshots are no longer saved due to a bug, so the solution is to roll back to the previous version or wait for the patch.
๐ก
If screenshots are saved but not displayed in the gallery, try rebooting your smartphone or using a file manager (such as Mi File Manager) to search the Pictures/Screenshots folder.
