Creating a screenshot (or “print screen”) on Xiaomi smartphones is a challenge that every user faces. Whether you want to save an important message, show an error in the app or share interesting content, the ability to quickly take a screenshot saves time. However, not everyone knows that there are several ways to create a screen on devices with a MIUI shell, from the classic combination of buttons to voice commands and gestures.
In this article, we will discuss all the current methods, including hidden features for old and new models (Redmi Note 12, POCO X5, Xiaomi 13T, etc.), as well as how to edit screenshots right after creation and where they are saved. If you can not take a picture in a standard way, here you will find a solution!
1. Classic method: power and volume buttons
The most versatile method that works on all Xiaomi models - from the budget Redmi A2 to the flagship Xiaomi 14 Ultra.
- 📱 Simultaneously press the power button (on/lock) and the volume down button.
- 🎯 Hold them for 1-2 seconds until you hear the sound of the camera shutter and see the screen saving animation.
- 🖼️ The finished shot will appear in the notification bar – click on it to edit or share right away.
This works even on a locked screen (if the appropriate setting is enabled in Settings → Lock screen → Additional settings). However, some models (such as Black Shark 5) may need to hold the buttons a little longer due to game mode.
⚠️ Note: If you have a magnetic lock case (e.g. Xiaomi Smart Cover), it can block the button combination.
💡
On models with a physical Bixby button (such as the POCO F4 GT), the combination may conflict: Try to clamping the power + increase the volume instead of reducing.
2. Screenshot by gesture (no buttons)
The MIUI shell offers a handy three-finger screenshot feature, which is especially useful if the physical buttons on your Xiaomi are worn out or you prefer to control without too much pressing.
To include this method:
- Go to Settings → Additional functions → Gestures.
- Select the screenshot with a three-finger gesture and activate the switch.
- Test: Swipe down the screen with three fingers at the same time.
The gesture works in any application other than the system menus (such as Settings or Security). On some models (Redmi Note 11 Pro+), you can adjust the gesture direction - from top to bottom or from bottom to top.
| Xiaomi model | Support for the gesture | Features |
|---|---|---|
| Redmi 10/10A | ✅ Yes. | Requires MIUI 12.5+ |
| POCO X3 Pro | ✅ Yes. | It works even in games. |
| Xiaomi 12 Lite | ✅ Yes. | Supports scrolling screenshots |
| Black Shark 4 | ❌ No. | Use physical buttons |
3. Voice command for screenshot
If your Xiaomi supports XiaoAI (or Google Assistant), you can take voice screenshots, which is convenient when hands are busy or buttons are not available.
Instructions for XiaoAI:
- 🎤 Say “Hiaoi, take a screenshot” (on Chinese firmware) or “OK, Google, take a screenshot” (on global versions).
- 📲 Confirm permission to access the screen if the request appears for the first time.
- 🖼️ Screenshot will be saved automatically in the gallery.
Google Assistant may require a pre-setting:
- Open Settings → Applications → All Apps → Google.
- Select Permissions → Special Access → Screen recording.
- Enable permission for Google App.
⚠️ Attention: On models with MIUI For Russia (e.g. Redmi Note 11), voice commands may not work due to localization limitations.
4. Screenshot via notification panel (quick access)
MIUI 13/14 adds the ability to create screenshots directly from the notification bar, which is useful if buttons or gestures are disabled.
How it works:
- 📱 Swipe down from the top edge of the screen to open the notification bar.
- 🔍 Find the Screenshot icon (usually next to Airplane Mode and Flashlight»).
- 🖼️ Slip on it - the picture will be taken instantly.
If the badge is not:
- Click on "Edit" (pencil in the upper right corner of the panel).
- Find the “Screenshot” list and drag it to the active area.
Check out the MIUI version (should be 12.5+)
Update the notification bar (pull down twice)
Add the screenshot icon to the quick settings
Turn off energy saving for system applications-->
5. Advanced features: Scrolling screenshots and screen recording
On MIUI 14 and later, there are advanced options for working with screenshots:
- 📜 Scrolling Screenshot (Long Screen): After creating a regular tap screen in the notification and select Scrolling to capture the entire page (works in the browser, chats, documents).
- 🎥 Screen recording with sound: Hold the screenshot icon in the notification panel → select "Screen recording».
- ✏️ Quick editing: Immediately after creating the screen, click on its preview to crop, add text or figure.
On the POCO F5 and Xiaomi 13 Pro models, scrolling screenshots support automatic text recognition (OCR) – you can copy text directly from the image.

6. Screenshot via PC (ADB or Mi PC Suite)
If the touch screen is not working or you need to take a screenshot without physically accessing the phone, you can use a computer.
Method 1: ADB (for developers)
Required:
- 🖥️ Installed drivers ADB and Platform Tools.
- 📱 Developer's Included Mode and Debugging USB phone-on.
Screenshot command:
adb shell screencap -p /sdcard/screen.png
adb pull /sdcard/screen.pngMethod 2: via Mi PC Suite
The official utility from Xiaomi allows you to control your phone from a PC:
- Download Mi PC Suite and connect your phone via USB.
- In the program menu, select “File Management” → “Screenshot”.
- The photo will be saved on the computer in.png format.
⚠️ Attention: When in use ADB Screenshots are saved in the root folder of the phone (/sdcard/). Remove them after copying so as not to clog up your memory.
7 Where screenshots are saved and how to find them
By default, all screenshots on Xiaomi are saved in the folder:
/storage/emulated/0/Pictures/Screenshots/
How to get there:
- 📁 Open the Files app (or any file manager).
- 🖼️ Go to the "Images" section» → «Screenshots».
- 🔍 Search for the keyword “Screenshot” (in English firmware) or “Screenshot” (in Russian).
If the folder is empty:
- Check if saving is disabled in Settings → Storage → Folders → Screenshots.
- Make sure the Gallery app has access to the storage.
- Restart your phone – sometimes screenshots appear after the reboot.
💡
On some models (Redmi 9A, POCO M3), screenshots can be saved to the DCIM/Screenshots folder instead of the standard one.
8. Frequent problems and their solutions
If you can’t get screenshots, check out these points:
| Problem. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Buttons don't respond. | System or case getting stuck | Remove the case, reboot the phone. |
| The gesture's not working. | Disabled function in settings | Include in Additional Functions → Gestures |
| Screenshot black | DRM restrictions (Netflix, banking applications) | Use the built-in screen function in the app |
| No shutter sound. | Silent mode or disabled in settings | Check the settings → Sounds → System sounds |
Special case: On devices with MIUI for Europe (e.g. Xiaomi 12T), screenshots may be blocked in some applications (e.g. SberBank Online or Tinkoff). This is due to security policy - use the built-in screen saving feature in the app itself.
💡
If screenshots are taken but not saved, check permissions for the Media Storage app in Settings → Apps → All Apps.
