Taking a screenshot on Xiaomi Redmi smartphones seems like a simple task โ until you run into the unexpected. For some reason, the Redmi Note 12 doesnโt have the usual button combination, and the Redmi 10 has lost the screenshot icon in the notification curtain. Or you suddenly find that screenshots are saved in strange resolution. This article will not just list the standard methods, but will reveal all the nuances from hidden gestures in MIUI 14 to solving typical problems.
We tested all of the techniques on 15 Redmi models, from the budget Redmi A2 to the flagship Redmi K60, and found patterns. It turns out that even the firmware version affects the availability of features: for example, the scrolling screenshot only appeared in MIUI 12.5, and the triple-touch gesture does not work on all devices, you will learn how to take a screenshot in any situation โ even if the sensor does not respond or the phone freezes.
1. Standard method: button combination
The classic method that works on all Redmi models โ from the Redmi 4X (2017) to the fresh Redmi Note 13 Pro+.
- Open the screen that you want to capture.
- Press the power button and the volume down button at the same time.
- Hold for 1-2 seconds until you hear the characteristic shutter sound (if the sound is on) and see the animation.
โ ๏ธ Note: Some models (e.g. Redmi) 9A) This combination can trigger a switch-off menu:
- ๐ Try pressing buttons simultaneously and sharply, rather than holding them.
- โ๏ธ Check if the power button is assigned to another gesture in Settings โ Special facilities โ Power button.
- ๐ฑ If you have a case with necklines under the buttons, remove it - sometimes it blocks the full press.
Where to look for a screenshot? By default, files are saved to the DCIM โ Screenshots or Pictures โ Screenshots folder. On MIUI 14, a separate screenshot gallery has appeared - swipe down from the top edge of the screen and tap on the thumbnail in the notification.
2. Screenshot by gesture: triple touch
The Three-finger screenshot feature is available on most Redmis with MIUI 10 and later, and is especially handy if the physical buttons are faulty or you prefer to control your phone with one hand.
- Go to Settings โ Additional โ Buttons and gestures โ Screenshot gestures.
- Activate the Triple Touch switch.
- (Optional) Choose whether to save the screenshot immediately or show a preview for editing.
Now to take a picture:
- Touch the screen with three fingers at the same time.
- Hold 0.5 seconds and let go.
๐ Why the gesture doesnโt work?
- ๐๏ธ Youโre not touching at the same time โ try practicing on an empty screen.
- ๐ต The function is disabled in the settings (see path above).
- ๐งค On the screen, dirt or protective film interferes with the sensor.
- ๐ On some models (e.g. Redmi) 8A) Gesture conflicts with Gesture for partial screenshot - turn it off.
๐ก
If triple taping is triggered by chance (e.g. in games), reduce the sensitivity of the gesture in the same settings or turn off the function altogether.
3. Screenshot via notification panel
The most reliable method is if the buttons or sensor are not working. MIUI has a built-in button for screenshots in the notification curtain, but you need to add this first:
- Swipe down from the top edge of the screen to open the notification bar.
- Put it on the icon. โ๏ธ (Edit).
- Find the Screenshot tile (usually hidden in the Other Settings section) and drag it to the active area.
Now to take a picture:
- Open the screen.
- Swipe down and tap on the Screenshot icon.
โ ๏ธ Note: Some firmware (e.g. global) MIUI 13 for Redmi Note 11) this tile may not be available:
- ๐ Update the firmware to the latest version.
- ๐ Install an alternative notification bar through Settings โ Annexes โ Smart functions โ Control panel.
- ๐ฑ Use Google Assistant: Say โOK, Google, take a screenshotโ (requires setting up a voice assistant).
4. Scrolling screenshot (long screenshot)
Scrolling screenshot allows you to capture a full web page, chat in Telegram or a list in MIUI. It works on all Redmi with MIUI 12.5 and later, but there are nuances:
- Take a regular screenshot in any way (buttons, gesture or notification panel).
- Immediately after the thumbnail appears in the notification, tap on it.
- In the editor that opens, select Scroll (an icon with two arrows down).
- Wait until the phone automatically scrolls through the screen and connects the pieces into a single file.
๐ Limitations of function:
- ๐ซ It doesnโt work in some apps (like Instagram, TikTok โ they block screenshots).
- ๐ Maximum length: 10 screens (depending on model).
- โก On Redmi with 3 GB of RAM (for example, Redmi) 9C) may slow down during processing.

5. Screenshot with Google Assistant
If standard methods donโt work (e.g., on Redmi with custom firmware), use the voice assistant, which is universal and works even on locked phones (if Google Assistant is enabled):
- Activate the assistant: Voice: say "OK, Google." Gesture: hold the home button (if you have one) or swipe away from the corner of the screen.
Take a screenshot.
Make a screenshot
Confirm the action if necessary.
๐ง Setting up Google Assistant for screenshots:
- Open the Google app.
- Go to Settings โ Google Assistant โ Commands.
- Make sure that the screenshot function is enabled.
โ ๏ธ Note: Some Redmi models (e.g. Redmi) A1) Google Assistant is disabled by default to activate it:
- Go to Settings โ Apps โ All Apps โ Google.
- Slip the Permissions and turn on the Microphone and Overlay.
- Run Google Assistant manually from the app menu.
๐ก
If screenshots are not saved at all, check the permissions for the Gallery app and the free space on the device (need a minimum of 500 MB).
