Why photos are flipped on Xiaomi and how to fix it
You took the perfect shot on the Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 or POCO X5 Pro, but when viewed in the gallery, the image was turned over 90° This problem is familiar to many Xiaomi smartphone owners, especially when shooting in portrait orientation or using a front-facing camera. EXIF, Firmware processing errors MIUI, Or features of the standard gallery.
In 80 percent of cases, the inverted photo is not a camera defect, but a consequence of automatically applied turns by the system. For example, if you held your phone at an angle while shooting, the gyro sensor recorded this in the metadata, and the gallery "corrected" the orientation... but sometimes mistakenly. Fortunately, you can fix this in a few seconds — at least 5 ways, which we will discuss below.
Important: if the problem only occurs when sending a photo (to WhatsApp, Telegram or by mail), the settings of messengers are to blame - they often ignore the EXIF metadata and show a "raw" image, in which case it is enough to rotate the photo before sending.
Method 1: Turn your photo in the standard Xiaomi Gallery
The fastest method is to use the built-in tools of the MIUI Gallery, which are available on all models, from Redmi 9A to Xiaomi 14 Ultra, and do not require the installation of additional applications.
- Open the Gallery app (a flower icon with petals).
- Find the right photo and tap it to open in full screen mode.
- Click on the Edit icon** (pencil in the bottom menu).
- In the editor that opens, select the Cutting tab (frame icon).
- In the lower menu, a turn button will appear – press it until the image takes the desired orientation.
- Click Save (check in the top right corner). The system will suggest saving a copy or overwriting the original — choose the second option if you want to fix the metadata.
⚠️ Attention: On some firmware MIUI 13-14 The turn button is hidden behind the long tap on the clip icon. If you can't see it right away, hold your finger on the scissors icon. 1-2 seconds.
Update the Gallery app on Google Play
Reboot the phone.
Try to open a photo through Google Photos
Install an alternative gallery (e.g. Simple Gallery)-->
This method is suitable for turning 90°, but will not help if the image is reflected in a mirror (for example, a selfie from the front camera).
Method 2: Use Google Photos to automatically correct
Google Photos can automatically determine the correct orientation of images and correct metadata errors, which is especially useful if you have massively inverted photos after transferring from another device or updating MIUI.
Instructions:
- Install Google Photos from Google Play if you don’t already have one.
- Open the app and find the problem photo.
- Slip on it, then click Edit (three stripes at the bottom).
- Select the Rotating Instrument (round arrow).
- Turn the image 90° counter/clockwise or select Autocorrect.
- Save the changes with the Ready button.
Google Photos saves the originals in the cloud, so even after editing, you can return the original version of the photo through the Recycle Bin (within 60 days).

Method 3: Mirror reflection of the photo (for selfies)
The front camera on Xiaomi defaults to mirror images — that is, text on a T-shirt or text on the background will be reflected backwards. This is standard selfie behavior, but sometimes you need to get a "normal" image. Here's how to reflect the photo horizontally:
The standard MIUI Gallery does not have such a feature, so use the Snapseed app (free from Google):
- Download Snapseed from Google Play.
- Open the photo in the app and tap the Tools.
- Select the Turn (arrow icon).
- In the lower menu, click on the “Reflect” icon** (two triangles).
- Choose Horizontal for mirror reflection or Po vertical for upside down flip.
- Save the result with the Export button.
💡
If you often need to mirror selfies, turn on the “Save SLR Photos” option in Xiaomi camera settings (some models call it “Reflect Front Camera”). → Additionally.
⚠️ Note: When mirroring in Snapseed, original metadata is lost EXIF (If they are important, use Google Photos or specialized editors like Photo. EXIF Editor.
Method 4: Packet orientation correction (for hundreds of photos)
If you have a massive photo flipped after updating MIUI or transferring from another phone, fixing them one by one is painful.
Steps for batch processing:
- Install Photo Editor from Google Play.
- Launch the application and select Packet Editing.
- Check all problematic photos (you can choose a whole folder).
- Press Turn and select a direction (e.g. 90° against emergency).
- Enable Save EXIF if metadata is important.
- Start the processing button Apply.
The application supports automatic orientation determination EXIF-tags, which is useful if photos are flipped because of a gallery failure, and it also has a function to fix the date of creation, which is useful if after editing the photos "lost" in time in the gallery.
Why does MIUI sometimes “reset” the orientation of the photo?
Method 5: Correct orientation via PC (for complex cases)
If none of the mobile methods worked, or the photos are damaged (do not open on the phone), try to fix them on the computer.
You'll need:
- 🖥️ Computer with Windows/macOS
- 📁 Cable USB (or cloud storage for transferring photos)
- 🛠️ FastStone Image Viewer (free) or IrfanView
Instructions for FastStone Image Viewer:
- Connect Xiaomi to your PC and copy the problematic photos to a separate folder.
- Open them in FastStone (select a few files and drag them to the program window).
- Click JPEG Lossless Rotate in the Tools menu.
- Select the desired turn (e.g. Rotate 90° CW) and confirm.
- The program will overwrite files without loss of quality (thanks to lossless) JPEG-algorithm).
⚠️ Note: If the photo is saved in format HEIC (typical of Xiaomi when shooting in Pro-Mode, first convert them to JPEG through MIUI Gallery (Export) → Save how JPEG). FastStone doesn't support it. HEIC free of additional plugins.
What to do if the photo is turned when you send it
Xiaomi users complain that photos are normally displayed in the gallery, but when sent via WhatsApp, Viber or mail, they turn to 90°. The reason is that messengers are ignored EXIF-Orientation tag and show a "raw" image.
Decisions:
- 📱 Before sending: Open a photo in Google Photos and manually rotate it (even if it looks normal in the gallery).
- 🔄 In the settings of the messenger: in Telegram, turn off “Compression photo” (Settings) → Data and memory → Photo quality).
- 🖼️ Conversion to JPEG: Export photos from the Gallery MIUI how JPEG (Share. → Save how JPEG) — This will reset problematic metadata.
💡
If photos are only turned over when they are sent, the problem is not with the phone, but with the messenger. Most apps (except Google Photos) can't read correctly. EXIF-pivot.
