Did you take a great shot on your Xiaomi or Redmi, but the photo turned upside down? Or do you need to reflect the image vertically/horizontally before sending? In this article, we will discuss all possible ways to turn and save photos on Xiaomi devices, from standard tools to professional solutions.
The problem with the orientation of photos occurs more often than it seems: a smartphone can misidentify the position of the camera, especially when shooting in portrait mode or using a wide-angle lens, and fortunately, this can be fixed in a few seconds without loss of quality and without installing additional programs.
We'll look at this.
- π Turning in a standard gallery (including hidden features) MIUI)
- πΌοΈ Editing through Google Photos (with sync in the cloud)
- π± Third-party applications for advanced editing
- π» Ways for PC (if you need to process a lot of photos)
- π οΈ Metadata correction EXIF (professional)
Importantly, some methods only work on certain versions of MIUI, and we'll show you the compatibility for each method.
1. Turn photo in the standard gallery Xiaomi
The fastest way is to use the built-in Gallery app (or Photos in newer versions of MIUI), which works on all Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO devices without any additional installations.
Instructions:
- Open the Gallery app and select the photo you want.
- Click on the Edit icon** (pencil in the lower right corner).
- In the lower menu, tap on "Turn"** (round arrow).
- Each click turns the photo 90Β° clockwise.
- After adjusting, click Save (or Ready in MIUI 14+).
β οΈ Attention: B MIUI 13 and older, when you save the edited photo, the original is automatically replaced (unless you have the option "Save a copy" in the gallery settings). To avoid loss of source, pre-copy the photo to another folder.

Additional features of the gallery editor:
- π Cutting β changing the aspect ratio (for example, for Instagram Stories).
- π¨ Filters β Fast color correction.
- βοΈ Retouching - removal of defects (in MIUI 14+).
- π Reflection - mirror image horizontally/vertically (not available on all models).
If there is no turn icon, update the Gallery app** through the Play Store or check the tool display settings in Gallery Settings β Editor.
2.Use Google Photos for turnaround and cloud storage
Google Photos offers more flexible editing tools and automatically syncs changes to the cloud, which is handy if youβre working with photos on multiple devices.
How to turn a photo in Google Photos:
- Open the app and select the desired photo.
- Slip on "Edit"** (three stripes below).
- Go to the "Tools" tabΒ» β Β«TurnΒ».
Benefits of Google Photos:
- π Cloud storage β photos are available on all devices.
- π Editing Versions β You Can Reverse Changes.
- π€ AI tools β automatic perspective correction.
β οΈ Note: When saving in original quality ("High quality" in the settings) Google Photos compresses the photo to 16 MP. To save without loss, choose the option "Original quality" (requires a storage fee of over 15 GB).

If after rotating the photo in Google Photos it is displayed incorrectly in other applications, clear the cache of the gallery (Settings β Apps β Gallery β Storage β Clear the cache).
3. Third-party applications for advanced editing
If built-in tools arenβt enough, use specialized editors. We tested 5 apps and selected the best ones for Xiaomi devices:
| Annex | Features | Compatibility with MIUI | Evaluation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Snapseed | Professional tools, RAW support, 1Β° turn | All versions. | βββββ |
| PicsArt | Templates for social networks, AI effects, animation | MIUI 12+ | ββββ |
| Lightroom | EXIF correction, color profiles, cloud synchronization | Requires Android 8+ | βββββ |
| Photo Editor Pro | Packet editing, object removal | MIUI 11β14 | βββ |
We recommend Snapseed for fine-tuning the angle of rotation:
- Open the photo in the app.
- Select the tool "Turn"** (Tools β Rotate).
β οΈ Note: Some apps (e.g. PicsArt) add watermarks to the free version!

4. Rotating the photo on the computer (for mass processing)
If you want to process dozens of photos, you'll be more comfortable using a PC, and let's look at the ways you can do it for Windows and macOS.
Method 1: Windows Explorer
- Connect Xiaomi to your PC in File Transfer (MTP) mode.
- Open the photo folder in the Explorer.
- Select the desired files, right-click β βTurn clockwiseβ or βTurn againstβ.
Method 2: macOS (Preview)
- Import the photo to the βPreviewβ app**.
- Press Cmd + R to turn 90Β° or use the toolbar.
- Save the changes (Cmd + S).
Method 3: Batch processing in FastStone Image Viewer
For a massive turn of hundreds of photos:
- Install FastStone Image Viewer (free for personal use).
- Select the folder with the photo, select "Package processing"**.
- In the settings, specify βTurnβ** β 90Β° CW/CCW.
β οΈ Note: When connecting Xiaomi to the PC in mode MTP You may experience delays in transferring large numbers of photos. To speed up, copy files to your PC drive before processing.
5. Correction of orientation through EXIF-Data (for experienced users)
Sometimes the photo is displayed correctly in the gallery, but it is turned over when viewed on other devices, this is due to incorrect metadata Orientation in EXIF.
Method 1: EXIF Editor (Android)
- Install EXIF Editor from the Play Store.
- Open the problem photo.
- Find the Orientation field and set the value: 1 is the normal position; 6 is a 90Β° turn on the hour; 8 is a 90Β° turn against the hour.
Save the changes.
Method 2: Command Prompt (ADB)
For advanced users, if the photo is stored in system folders (e.g. screenshots):
adb shell am start -a android.intent.action.VIEW -d file:///sdcard/DCIM/Screenshots/photo.jpg -t image/* -n com.android.gallery3d/.app.GalleryThen manually rotate the photo in the gallery and save it.
β οΈ Attention: Editing EXIF This can cause you to lose your geotags and your date!

If the photo is only flipped in certain applications (like Viber or WhatsApp), the problem is EXIF metadata. Use EXIF Editor to reset it.
6.Why photos are kept upside down and how to prevent it
Most often, the wrong orientation of the photo is associated with:
- π± Gyroscope error β smartphone incorrectly determined the position when shooting.
- π Conflict. EXIF β Metadata indicates a turn, but the gallery ignores them.
- π€ bagom MIUI β in some versions (for example, MIUI 12.5) The photo from the front camera was kept inverted.
How to avoid the problem:
- π§ Update the firmware to the latest version MIUI (Check in the settings β The phone. β Updating the system).
- πΈ Before shooting, make sure that the icon βAutoporovβ** in quick settings is active.
- ποΈ Clear the camera cache (Settings) β Annexes β Camera. β Warehouse β Clear the cache).
If the problem is recurring systemically, try resetting the camera settings:
- Go to Settings β Applications β Camera β Storage.
- Click "Reset settings"**.
- Reset the device.
