Scanning. QR-The standard application of the camera does not recognize the code on the Xiaomi Redmi smartphones, then Google Lens gives an error, then it is not clear where to look for the scan feature in the latest versions. MIUI 14/15. This article will not just list the ways, but will explain why they may not work and what to do in such cases.
We tested all methods on current models β from the budget Redmi 12 to the flagship Redmi. K70 Pro, and also considered the nuances for devices with custom firmware. MIUI, scanner QR-codes without the Internet, and without installing additional applications (this is covered in the section on Quick Tools). If you have already tried to scan the code through the camera and nothing came out, do not close the article, the solution is!
1.Scanning through a standard Xiaomi camera
The most obvious way is to use the built-in Camera app. Most Redmi models (starting with the Redmi Note 8 and later) have a scanning feature. QR-The code is embedded in the application itself, but it must be activated correctly.
How it works:
- π· Open the Camera app and switch to Photo mode (not Video or Portrait).
- π Point the lens at QR-code so that it takes up at least 30 percent of the screen.
- π If the scan works, a notification will appear telling you to click on the link.
If nothing happens,
- βοΈ Check if the feature is enabled in the camera settings: Camera settings β Additionally. β Scanner. QR-codes (in some models, the path may be different).
- π Reboot your smartphone β sometimes the recognition service will βhangβ after the update MIUI.
- π₯ Update the Camera app via Google Play (yes, even standard Xiaomi apps are sometimes updated separately).
β οΈ Attention: On Redmi 9A Other budget models with a Helio processor G25/G35 The standard camera may not recognize QR-In this case, use the methods in the following sections.
2.Google Lens is a universal scanner for all models
Google Lens is built into most Xiaomi Redmi smartphones (except the Chinese versions without Google services), which works even on older models and is independent of the MIUI version. The main advantage is the recognition of not only links, but also text, barcodes, plants and even landmarks.
Step-by-step:
- Open the Google app (the icon with the letter "G").
- In the search bar on the right, click on the Google Lens icon (stylized camera).
- Put the camera on QR-If you need to, tap the screen to focus.
- Wait for the notification with the recognized information.
If Google Lens does not find QR-code:
- π¦ Increase screen brightness β sometimes code is poorly read in dim lighting.
- π Make sure the code is at least 50% of the frame (Google Lens is more size-conscious than a standard camera).
- π Check your internet connection β some Lens features require online access.
π‘
If Google Lens is not installed, download it separately from Google Play. On the Chinese versions of Redmi (without GMS), use an alternative - the ML Kit application from Google.
3. Hidden MIUI function: "Fast tools"
Few people know, but in MIUI 12/13/14 It has a built-in scanner. QR-It's hidden in the Quick Tools menu (formerly called Tools), which is especially useful if the main camera is damaged or refuses to scan the code.
How to find and use:
- Swipe down the screen to open the notification bar.
- Swipe left on the bottom of the Quick Settings panel (where Wi-Fi, Bluetooth icons, etc. are).
- Find the icon. QR-code (a square with three squares inside) and click on it.
- Allow access to the camera (at first start) and hover the lens over the code.
If the icons are not in the quick settings:
- π§ Click on the icon. βοΈ (Edit) in the notification panel.
- π Find the scanner on the list. QR-Drag it to the active area and move it to the active area.
- π± On some firmware (for example, MIUI EU) This tool may be called the Mi Scanner.
Why is this method better than a standard camera?
4 Third-party applications: when nothing helps
If the built-in methods didnβt work (for example, on custom firmware or after resetting), we still use third-party scanners. We tested 5 popular applications and selected the best ones:
| Annex | Advantages | Deficiencies | Ratings. |
|---|---|---|---|
| QR & Barcode Scanner (by Gamma Play) | Fast scanning, code history, working without the internet | Advertising in the free version | 4.7 |
| Kaspersky QR Scanner | Checking links to viruses, blocking dangerous sites | Registration is required for some functions | 4.5 |
| NeoReader QR & Barcode | Support for damaged codes, QR generator | A complex interface for beginners | 4.4 |
How to choose the right one:
- π‘οΈ If you scan codes from unknown sources (such as on the streets or in traffic), use Kaspersky. QR Scanner β it checks for phishing links.
- π± For older Redmi models (e.g. Redmi) 5/6) fit QR & Barcode Scanner β Itβs lightweight and runs on Android 7+.
- π§ Not only do you need to scan, but you also need to create QR-codes, take NeoReader.
β οΈ Attention: Some applications (e.g, QR ShopSavvy's Code Reader requests access to contacts and locations for no objective reason.
βοΈ Security check before installing the scanner
5. Scan through Mi Browser (for web links)
If QR-The code contains a link to the site, it can be scanned directly through the Mi Browser browser (preinstalled on all Redmi), which is convenient when you need to quickly open a web page without switching between applications.
Instructions:
- Open Mi Browser.
- In the upper right corner, click on the icon. QR-code (near the search button).
- Allow access to the camera and point the lens to the code.
- The link will automatically open in a new tab.
Limitations of the method:
- π« It only works with web links (does not recognize Wi-Fi codes, contacts or text).
- π Requires Internet connection to open the page.
- π On some versions MIUI icon QR-code may be hidden - update the browser.
π‘
Mi Browser automatically checks for opener QR-This reduces the risk of getting into a phishing site, but does not guarantee 100% protection.
6.The solution to the problems: why Redmi doesn't scan QR-code
If none of these methods worked, the problem could be system settings or hardware constraints.-5 causes and ways of eliminating them:
| Problem. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| The camera doesn't focus on the code | Contaminated lens or downed settings | Wipe the camera with a soft cloth, reset the camera settings in Settings β Apps β Camera β Storage β Reset |
| QR-code is recognized, but the link is not opened | Ad Blocker or VPN | Disable VPN, add domain to blocker exceptions (e.g. AdGuard) |
| The scanner detects an error called "Inappropriate format" | Damaged or unconventional QR-code | Try scanning the code with another application (like NeoReader) |
Additional checks:
- π΅ Make sure that the power saving mode is not turned on β it can block the camera from working in the background.
- π Check if access to the camera for applications is blocked in Settings β Confidentiality β Application authorizations β Camera.
- π‘ If you scan code to connect to Wi-Fi, make sure that Wi-Fi is turned on (some scanners require this to recognize network codes).
7. Alternative methods: without camera and applications
If your smartphone camera is broken or you canβt use it for some reason, there are workarounds:
Method 1: Screenshot + Online Service
- πΈ Take a picture. QR-code by another device (e.g. tablet or camera).
- π₯οΈ Upload your photo to your PC and use an online scanner like ZXing Decoder.
- π Get decrypted information without installing programs.
Method 2: Manual data entry
Some of them QR-codes (e.g. Wi-Fi) contain text in a readable format. If you zoom in, you can disassemble the characters and type them manually:
WIFI:S:my_network;T:WPA;P:my_password;;Where S is the network name, P is the password.
β οΈ Note: Never manually enter data from QR-codes containing references (for example, https://...). There is a high risk of typos and switching to a phishing site.
