Why Xiaomi Phone Records Sound When Shooting Videos and How to Fix It
Have you ever faced a situation where you try to shoot a beautiful video on your Xiaomi, but you end up with a recording with an obsessive background noise? Or want to keep the stillness in the frame, but the camera persistently captures all the sounds around? This problem is familiar to many owners of Redmi smartphones, POCO and other brands. The fact is that by default most Xiaomi models automatically turn on the microphone when recording video - even when you do not need it.
In this article, weโll look at all the possible ways to turn off audio recording on Xiaomi phones, from standard MIUI settings to hidden features and third-party apps, how to do this on different versions of firmware (from MIUI 12 to MIUI 15), which models support this option out of the box, and which will require additional manipulation, and weโll also explain why sometimes sound is still recorded despite all efforts, and how to avoid it.
Before we get to the instructions, itโs important to understand that not all Xiaomi devices have the direct ability to turn off the microphone when shooting, depending on the phone model, MIUI version, and even regional firmware. But donโt worry โ even if there are no standard settings, weโll find workarounds!
Method 1: Standard sound shutdown in the Camera application
Letโs start with the simplest method that works on most modern Xiaomi smartphones (e.g. Redmi Note 11/12, Xiaomi 13/14, POCO F5/X5). In the latest versions of MIUI 13-15, the developers have added the ability to turn off the microphone directly in the camera interface.
- Open the standard Camera app.
- Switch to video shooting mode (usually swipe left or click on the camera icon).
- In the top toolbar, find the microphone icon (๐ค) With a crossed-out badge.
- The icon should turn gray or reddish, which means that the microphone is turned off.
If you have an older model (like the Redmi Note 10 or POCO X3), you may not have a microphone icon, in which case, try the following steps:
- Run the video.
- During recording, tap the screen to allow additional buttons to appear.
- Find the microphone badge (๐ค) and tap him.
Important! On some firmware, this option may reset after you restart your phone. If the sound is recorded again, check the settings before each shot.
โ ๏ธ Attention: On devices with MIUI 12 and below (e.g. Redmi 9 or POCO M3) There may not be a standard microphone switch, in which case you can proceed to the following methods.
Method 2: Sound settings in camera settings
If the camera interface does not have a visible button to turn off the microphone, try to find this option in the app settings. This method works on many models, including the Xiaomi Mi 11, Redmi K40 and others:
- Open the Camera app.
- Put it on the gear (โ๏ธ) Or swipe up/down to open the settings.
- Find the Video Settings section or Recording options.
- Look for options like this: ๐ค Recording sound (turn off the slider) ๐ No sound (turn on) ๐น Video mode โ Turn off the microphone
On some firmware, the path might look like this: Camera settings โ Additional โ Recording. If you don't find this option, then your model doesn't support turning off the sound through the standard settings, in which case move on to the next method.
Open the Camera app|Check the microphone icon (๐ค) interfaced|Look at the Settings. โ Video parameters|Make sure the "Sound Record" option is disabled-->
Note: On Google Camera (GCam) phones, the process may be different. If you use this camera, read the separate section below.
Method 3: Use the silent video mode (hidden MIUI function)
Not many people know, but MIUI has a hidden silent mode that turns off audio recording, which works on most devices, including the Redmi Note 9 Pro, POCO F3, and others.
- Open the Camera app and go to video mode.
- Hold your finger on the screen for 2-3 seconds until the context menu appears.
- Some firmware shows up here with the option of Quiet Video or No Sound. Choose this.
- If the menu doesnโt appear, try swiping down from the top edge of the screen โ sometimes the option is hidden there.
This method doesn't always work on custom firmware or after updates. If you don't work, try the next one.
What if there is no silent video?
| Xiaomi model | Support for turning off sound in a standard camera | Does third party software need to be used? |
|---|---|---|
| Xiaomi 13/14, Redmi Note 12 | Yes (through the icon) ๐ค) | No. |
| POCO F5, Redmi K50 | Yeah (in video settings) | No. |
| Redmi Note 10, POCO X3 | Partially (depends on firmware) | Sometimes. |
| Redmi 9, POCO M3 | No. | Yes. |
Method 4: Turn off the sound through Google Camera (GCam)
Many Xiaomi users install Google Camera (GCam) to improve the quality of their shooting, and if you use this camera, you can turn off the audio recording as follows:
- Open Google Camera and switch to video mode.
- Tap it on three points (โฎ) in the upper corner or swipe sideways to open additional settings.
- Find the Audio or Microphone option and turn it off.
- In some versions of GCam, you need to pinch your finger on the screen while recording to make a menu with the Mute option appear.
How to use the Open Camera:
- Download the app from Google Play.
- Open it and go to video mode.
- Tap it on three points (โฎ) โ Settings โ Video Settings.
- Find the Audio source option and select Disable or None.
- Return to the shooting, and the video will be recorded without sound.
Important: Some apps (like Footage) require permission to record audio even if you turn it off. This is normal - without this permission, the app will not be able to control the microphone.
โ ๏ธ Note: With third-party quality cameras, video may be different from the standard app. For example, on the Redmi Note 11, the Open Camera sometimes records videos with a lower bitrate!
Method 6: Remove the sound after shooting (if nothing helps)
If you can't turn off the microphone while you're shooting, don't despair! You can always remove the sound from the video after you've recorded it. Here are three simple ways to do this.
1.Through the standard video editor Xiaomi
Most Xiaomi phones have a built-in Video Editor (or Gallery โ Edit):
- Open the video in the Gallery and tap Edit.
- Choose the audio instrument or the sound.
- Find the option to Delete audio or turn off sound.
- Save the changes.
2.Using the InShot app
InShot is one of the most popular video editing apps:
- Install InShot from Google Play.
- Import your video.
- Slip on the speaker icon (๐) bottom-panel.
- Move the volume slider left to the end or press Remove the audio.
- Export the video.
3. Online services (if you do not want to install applications)
You can use free online tools:
- ๐ Clideo โ upload the video, select Turn off the sound and download the result.
- ๐ Kapwing supports the format to 4K, But adds a watermark in the free version.
The advantage of this method is that you can not only remove the sound, but also add another audio track, crop video or apply filters.
๐ก
If you need to shoot video without sound regularly, you better set it up in advance in the camera app. Post-shoot editing takes time and can degrade the video quality when you recompress it.
Frequent problems and their solutions
Even after the audio is turned off in the settings, some users are faced with the microphone recording the audio anyway, and here are the most common reasons and ways to eliminate them:
1.The sound is recorded despite the disconnection in the settings
This may be due to:
- ๐ Resetting settings after update MIUI. Check the camera settings again.
- ๐ค Hardware microphone problems. Try recording a voice message -- if there's a sound, the microphone is working.
- ๐ฑ Close all programs that use the microphone (e.g. voice assistants).
2. no option to turn off the sound
If your firmware does not have such a feature, try:
- ๐ง Update MIUI Update (sometimes the option appears after the update).
- ๐ฑ Install custom firmware (e.g. Xiaomi.EU) where this feature can be unlocked.
- ๐ฅ Use third-party cameras as described in Method 5.
3.After editing the video, the sound returns
This may occur if:
- ๐พ You save the video in a format that doesn't support separate audio tracks (like some codeki). MP4.
- ๐ The editing app automatically adds sound. Check the export settings.
If none of these things worked, it may be the hardware that's the problem, and in that case, go to Xiaomi's service center.
