Why photos are flipped on Xiaomi and how to fix it
You took the perfect shot on your Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 or POCO X5 Pro, but when viewed in the gallery, it is displayed sideways or upside down? This problem is familiar to many owners of Xiaomi smartphones β and this is not due to the breakdown of the device, but to the peculiarities of processing metadata EXIF (information about the orientation of the picture).
80 percent of the time, it's not the smartphone that's the fault, but the software that opens the photo. For example, social networks (Vkontakte, Instagram) often automatically rotate images using their algorithms, and instant messengers (Telegram, WhatsApp) can compress files, losing metadata. But there are exceptions: if you transfer a photo from Xiaomi to your computer, and it shows a curve, the problem is exactly in the file itself.
In this article, we will discuss 5 working ways to deploy photos directly on your phone, including built-in MIUI tools and third-party solutions. All methods are tested on current models from 2023-2026 and work independently of the firmware version.
Method 1: Turning through the standard Xiaomi Gallery
The fastest method is to use the built-in Gallery app (or Photos in newer versions of MIUI) that supports basic editing functions, including rotating images. Here's how to do this:
- Open the Gallery app and find the photo you need.
- Tap the picture to open it in full screen mode.
- Click on the Edit icon** (pencil in the bottom menu).
- In the editor that opens, select the Rotating tool (round arrow).
- Tap the turn icon once or more times until the photo is in the right orientation.
- Click Save (or Ready in New Versions)
β οΈ Note: In some versions MIUI (for example, MIUI 14 for the Redmi Note 12 Pro+) When you save it, you create a copy of the file, and the original remains unchanged, and you have to manually delete it if you don't need it anymore.
Check that the photo is not in the cloud album (download it to your device)
Make sure that the Gallery settings include an editor (Settings β Additional β Photo Editor)
Close the background applications to avoid saving errors

If there is no Turn button, update the Gallery app through the Play Store or use an alternative method (see next section). On some models (e.g. POCO F4), this tool is hidden in the More menu (three dots in the upper right corner).
Method 2: Using Google Photos to Automatically Correct
Google Photos not only stores your photos, it automatically analyzes their orientation, and if the photo is upside down because of a metadata error, the service can fix it without you interfering.
- Install Google Photos from the Play Store if it is not already installed.
- Open the app and find the problem photo.
- Tap the picture, then click Edit (the icon with sliders).
- Go to the Tools tab and select Turn.
- Turn the photo 90Β° or 180Β° clockwise.
- Click Save copy (the original will remain unchanged).
The advantage of this method is automatic synchronization with the cloud, if you edit photos on Xiaomi, the changes will affect other devices (for example, on a tablet or PC), and Google Photos is better at recognizing orientation than the standard MIUI gallery.

If the photo is turned only when sent to instant messengers, try to open it in Google Photos before sending it and click "Export" - this will reset the EXIF metadata.
The downside is that it requires the Internet to work (at least when you first start it up), and it takes a little longer to edit than a standard gallery, but it's guaranteed to be correct.
Method 3: Third-party applications for precise control
If the built-in tools don't work (for example, the photo still shows a curve after a turn), use specialized applications. We tested 5 popular editors and selected the best ones:
- π± Photo & Picture Resizer is a lightweight editor with rotation and cropping.
- π Rotate Image Fix β Fixing errors EXIF, which cause the wrong display.
- π¨ Snapseed (from Google) β professional editor with a tool to turn and correct perspective.
- π QuickPic β an alternative gallery with a built-in editor that supports the turn.
Letβs look at the Snapseed (the most universal option):
- Install Snapseed from the Play Store.
- Open the app and import the photo (click Open).
- In the lower menu, select Tools β Turn.
- Use a two-finger gesture to turn the picture, or tap the turn icon 90Β°.
- Click Ready, then Export (select Save or Export a copy).
β οΈ Note: Some applications (e.g. Rotate Image Fix) change metadata EXIF This can cause the photo to display correctly on Xiaomi, but flip again when downloaded to a PC. To avoid this, export the image in format after you turn. JPEG top-quality.
| Annex | Pluses | Cons | Suitable for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Snapseed | Precise control, correction of perspective | A complex interface for beginners | Professional processing |
| Photo & Picture Resizer | Package processing, simple interface | Advertising in the free version | Quick correction of many photos |
| Rotate Image Fix | Corrects EXIF without loss of quality | Not working with RAW-file | Photos that are "persistently" turned over |
Method 4: Rotating through Explorer (for experienced users)
If the photo is stored in the phoneβs memory, it can be rotated even without specialized applications, through standard Explorer (or Files in newer versions of MIUI), a method that is suitable for users who prefer to work with files directly.
Instructions:
- Open the Explorer (or Files) application.
- Go to the photo folder (usually DCIM β Camera or Pictures).
- Find the file you want and hold your finger on it to open the context menu.
- Choose Open with Help β Gallery (or other app for viewing).
- In the viewer that opens, use standard rotating tools (see Method 1).
This is a useful method if you want to massively rename or move a photo after you turn, for example, you can immediately create a Fixed folder and save the corrected pictures there.

β οΈ Note: If you are editing the photos stored on SD-Before saving the card, make sure that the card is not protected from writing. Otherwise, the changes will not apply, and the original file may be corrupted.
Method 5: Correcting orientation on the computer
If none of the methods on the phone worked, transfer the photo to your PC and process it there. This is true for users who often work with large archives of images (for example, photographers or bloggers).
Here are 3 reliable ways to use your computer:
- π₯οΈ Windows (Conductor): Right-click on the file β Turn left/right (control tab in top menu).
- π Mac (View): Open the photo in the View app, then click Tools β Turn around.
- π Online Services: Upload photos to Img2Go or EZGIF (supports batch processing).
Critical detail: when you rotate through Windows Explorer, EXIF metadata is not updated - the photo may again appear curved on some devices. To avoid this, after you turn, open the picture in Paint and save it again (File β Save as).
If you're working with RAW-Using files (for example, with Xiaomi 13 Ultra), use professional programs like Adobe Lightroom or Darktable β they correctly process metadata of such formats.
Frequent Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Even after turning, the photo may not appear correctly.-5 The reasons why this happens and how to eliminate them:
- EXIF metadata conflicts with the viewer. Solution: Open the photo in Google Photos and export it again, it will reset the metadata.
- The photo is taken in portrait orientation, but saved as landscape. Solution: In the editor, rotate the picture 90Β° and save it to the highest quality.
- The viewing app ignores the turn.Solution: Try another viewer (like QuickPic or Simple Gallery).
- The file is corrupted when it is transmitted (e.g. via Bluetooth). Solution: Re-send the photo using Wi-Fi Direct or cloud storage.
- The phone has "Screep Screen" mode on. Solution: Turn off the autorotation in the notification curtain or the display settings.
If the problem is repeated systemically (for example, all photos from the front camera are saved upside down), check the camera settings:
- Open the Camera app.
- Go to Settings (cog in the top corner).
- Find the Save Orientation or Autoturn item and turn it off.

If the photo is turned only when watching on TV or through the HDMI, problem TV-Use special players (e.g., use special players) to display the screen, VLC).
