Losing or stealing a smartphone is stressful, especially if the device stores important data, photos or access to banking applications. Xiaomi owners have several unique tools to find a stolen phone, but their effectiveness depends on the preset and reaction speed. In this article, we will analyze all working methods of tracking over the Internet, from official Mi Cloud services to alternative methods using IMEI and Google Account.
Important: if the phone is off or taken off SIM-But even then, there's a chance of locking the device remotely or at least saving the data to the police!
1. Tracking through Mi Account (official method)
Mi Cloud is the main tool for finding stolen Xiaomi, but it only works if you meet three conditions:
- 🔹 Mi Account was enabled on the phone (you were part of Xiaomi account).
- 🔹 In the settings activated function Find the device (Settings) → Mi Account → Mi Cloud → Find the device).
- 🔹 Device connected to the Internet (mobile network or Wi-Fi).
If the terms are met, go to i.mi.com and log in with the same account as you did on your phone, and in Find your device, you will see the last known location, and you will also be able to:
- 📍 Call the phone (even if it is silent).
- 🔒 Lock the device with the message on the screen (for example, "Return for a reward").
- 🧹 Delete all data (last resort if the phone has confidential information).

2. Search through Google "Find the Device"
If you have added a Google Account to Xiaomi, you can try tracking it through Google’s Find Device service, which works independently of the Mi Cloud, but also requires:
- 🔹 Google login on your phone.
- 🔹 Included Geolocation Services and Remote Management (Settings) → Google → Security → Find the device).
- 🔹 Internet connections.
Algorithm of action:
- Go to the Google Device Search page.
- Select a stolen Xiaomi from the list (if multiple devices are tied).
- The map will show the last location, and the accuracy depends on the networks available (GPS gives an error of up to 5 meters, Wi-Fi - up to 50 meters).
- Use the options: 🔔 Turn on the sound (5 minutes at maximum volume). 🔒 Lock the device with the message. 🗑️ Delete data (irreversibly!).
Google Find Device often works even if Mi Cloud is disabled, but not all Xiaomi models support this feature 100%. For example, the POCO F5 or Redmi Note 12 may be restricted due to custom firmware.

3. IMEI Tracking: Myths and Reality
IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) is a unique phone identifier that theoretically allows you to track a device even after a reset.
- 🔹 Police can request data from operators, but only in a criminal case.
- 🔹 Online services such as imei.info or imei24.com It only shows technical characteristics, not location.
- 🔹 Mobile operators (MTS, Beeline, MegaFon) do not provide data on IMEI natural persons.
What can be done with IMEI:
- Find out IMEI: On the phone box (barcode sticker) in the check or warranty card. Through Mi Account (Devices → Information section).
- Contact the police with a statement of theft – they will send a request to the Ministry of Internal Affairs for blocking in the database of stolen devices.
- Operators can block the SIM-the card at your request, but not IMEI.
- Check the secondary market (Avito, Yula, local social media groups) – sometimes thieves sell phones without changing their IMEI.
If the phone has been dropped but you know its serial number (on the box or in the check), you can try contacting Xiaomi Service Center.They will not disclose the location, but can lock the device in their database the next time you contact the SC (for example, for repairs).

6 How to Protect Xiaomi Phone from Theft in Advance
The best protection is prevention: set up your Xiaomi so that in case of theft, the chances of returning are maximum:

Even if the phone is stolen, a blocked Mi Account and a Google Account will make it useless for the thief – after resetting, the device will require the username / password from the previous owner (Factory Reset Protection function).
7 Legal aspects: what the law says
In Russia, theft of a phone is classified under article 158 of the criminal code ("Theft"), and illegal use of other people's data - under article 272 of the criminal code ("Illegal access to computer information").
- Write a report to the police within 3 days after the theft (the sample can be downloaded on the website of the Ministry of Internal Affairs).
- Specify in the statement: IMEI and serial number; data Mi Account/Google; phone signs (color, cover, scratches).
Ask the police to send a request to the carrier for tracking by IMEI.
If they find the phone, you'll have to prove that you own it.
- 📄 Check or guarantee card.
- 📦 Box with IMEI.
