Next Next post: What to do if you steal Xiaomi
A stolen smartphone is not only a loss of a device, but also a risk of personal data leakage, access to banking apps and social networks. Xiaomi owners (including Redmi, POCO, Black Shark models) have the unique ability to track the gadget through IMEI, the international mobile equipment identifier. However, this process is often surrounded by myths: some users believe that IMEI allows you to determine the location with an accuracy of a meter, others β that the police will immediately lock the device on a single request.
The reality is more complicated. In 2026, IMEI searches became more limited due to tighter privacy policies, but working methods remain. In this article, we will examine: (1) How to find the IMEI of a stolen Xiaomi even if the phone is turned off; (2) Official and informal tracking services; (3) Legal nuances of interaction with police and telecom operators; 4) Alternative search methods if IMEI does not help. Importantly, no method guarantees 100% results, but a comprehensive approach increases the chances of returning the device or at least blocking it for attackers.
Step 1: Where to get the IMEI stolen Xiaomi
IMEI is a 15-digit code that is assigned to each phone during the manufacturing phase, and if you haven't written it down beforehand, there are a few ways to recover it:
- π¦ Phone box: IMEI indicated on a barcode sticker (usually under the code) IMEI1 or IMEI2 double-sim).
- π Warranty card: Often duplicates information from the box, but check β some service centers do not specify IMEI.
- βοΈ Xiaomi Cloud Storage: If the phone was tied to a Mi Account, IMEI You can find it in the Devices section. β Managing devices at account.xiaomi.com.
- π± Other devices: If you have previously synced contacts or data through the Mi Cloud, IMEI It can be displayed in a backup (check files with the.mbk extension).
If neither method worked, try to remember if you photographed the box or warranty card - sometimes IMEI gets pictured in the gallery. Xiaomi models with eSIM support (such as Xiaomi 13 Ultra) may require an additional EID code - look for it in the documents too.
β οΈ Please note: Do not trust sites that offer "restore" IMEI Serial number is a fraud. Serial number (S/N) and IMEI They are not interchangeable, and these services often collect data for sale.
Step 2: IMEI authentication and status check
Before searching, make sure your IMEI is not fake or blocked.
- Check the format: IMEI should be 15 digits. If it's smaller or larger, the code is incorrect. Example of the correct format: 861234567890123.
- Calculate the check digit: The last 14 digits are multiplied by coefficients (2.1,2.1,...), the sum should end with the last digit of the IMEI. Use the IMEI calculator to automate.
- Find out the status of the database GSMA: Info.com, enter the code and the system will show the phone model, country of origin and status (Clean, Blacklisted, Lost/Stolen).
If Blacklisted is a status, it means that the device is already on the blacklist of operators (possibly the previous owner reported theft), in which case the chances of search are minimal - the phone will not be able to connect to networks.
| IMEI status | What does it mean? | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Clean | IMEI is not on the blacklist. | You can try to track it through the operator or the police. |
| Blacklisted | The device is blocked by operators | Searching is pointless β the phone doesnβt work on networks |
| Lost/Stolen | Reported theft/loss | Contact the police with proof of purchase |
| Invalid | IMEI does not exist or is fake | Check the code again or look for alternative methods. |
π‘
If your Xiaomi supports two of your SIM-He's got two cards. IMEI (IMEI1 and IMEI2). One code is enough to search, but it is better to specify both β this will increase the chances of detection.
Step 3: Official ways to search through IMEI
In Russia and the CIS countries, there are three legal ways to use IMEI to search for a stolen phone:
1. Report to the police
By law, law enforcement agencies can request data from telecom operators about the latest location of the device via IMEI.
- π Write a statement of theft in the duty unit (specify) IMEI, Xiaomi model, serial number, purchase checks).
- π± Give access to your Mi Account (if your phone has been tied).
- π Ask to check the database of stolen devices (in some regions there are automated systems such as "Antivor").
Reality: Police rarely search for phones unless it involves a major theft (such as from a store), but a statement is needed to block IMEI from operators.
2. Blocking through the operator
If your phone is stolen from you SIM-card, operator (MTS, Beeline, MegaFon, Tele2) can:
- π« Block it. SIM-card at your request (call the hotline).
- π Add IMEI blacklist (requires a police report) + passport-copy).
Restriction: the lock only works on the network of one operator, and an attacker can insert the SIM of another provider.
3.Search for a Device from Xiaomi
If you have Mi Cloud enabled and Find the Device, try:
- Go to i.mi.com and log in.
- Select the stolen phone from the list of devices.
- Use the options to locate, block or erase data.
Important: the feature only works if the phone is connected to the Internet (Wi-Fi or mobile network), if the device is turned off or reset, you can not track it.
Record IMEI and serial phone number | Collect checks/guarantee/box |Photograph damage (if the phone is stolen violently)|Untie bank cards from Google Pay/Mi Pay |Replace passwords from social networks and email-->
Step 4: Alternative Search Methods (with caution!)
If the official methods have not worked, some users resort to non-standard methods, and we do not recommend using them unless absolutely necessary, but we will tell you about the risks and opportunities:
1. Tracking through Google Account
If you have a Google Account login, try Find My Device:
- βοΈ Shows the last known location (if enabled) GPS).
- βοΈ Allows you to lock the device or erase data.
- β It does not work if the phone is reset to factory settings.
2. Paid tracking services
There are websites on the Internet that offer "find a phone by IMEI for 500 rubles." 99% of them are scams.
- π΅οΈββοΈ They ask for payment for βaccess to the operator databaseβ (in fact, the databases are closed to individuals).
- π³ Stealing bank card details.
- π² Spread malware under the guise of βtrackers".
The only legal paid service is IMEI Tracker, but it only shows the country of the latest activity (without an exact address).
3. Social engineering
Some owners find their phones through:
- π Call to the stolen number (if any) SIM not blocked) with a request for refund.
- π¬ Correspondence in messengers (for example, via Telegram, if the account is not deleted).
- π Checking the announcements Avito/OLX down IMEI (Fraudsters often sell phones with original packaging).
β οΈ Warning: Don't try to contact thieves yourself - this can be dangerous. If you decide to negotiate a ransom, do it through the police or trusted intermediaries.
How to check if your phone is on sale on Avito?
Step 5: What to do if your phone is found but it is locked
If you managed to get Xiaomi back, but the attacker reset it to factory settings, there may be problems:
- Mi Account lock: A request to log in to the previous owner (your) appears on the screen. Solution: Enter your username/password from Mi Account. If you forgot your password, restore it through the recovery page (you will need a linked email or phone).
- Google Block (FRP): After the reset, you may need to enter data from the last Google account.Solution: Enter your details from the Gmail that was on the phone. If you don't remember, try recovering through accounts.google.com.
IMEI blacklist
If the phone doesnβt turn on or asks for an unknown account, the attacker may have searched it, in which case only contacting the Xiaomi service center with purchase documents will help.
π‘
Even if your phone is locked, donβt try to hack Mi Account or FRP yourself β this can result in complete data loss and warranty cancellation.
Step 6: How to Protect Xiaomi from Future Theft
To minimize the risks, set your phone up in advance:
- π Enable Mi Account Lock: Go to Settings β Xiaomi account β Device security and activate Mi Account Lock. Now, after reset, your login/password will be required.
- π Activate "Find the device": In Settings β Mi Account β Mi Cloud β Find the device, turn on geolocation and remote lock.
- π‘οΈ Set the password on SIM-card: This will protect you from using your number on another phone. PUK documented SIM.
- π± Take a picture. IMEI Serial number: Save a photo of the box and warranty card to the cloud (e.g. Google Drive).
- π³ Untie your bank cards: In Google Pay or Mi Pay, remove your linked cards if your phone is stolen.
Additional measure: Install the Cerberus or Prey Anti Theft app.
- Take a picture of the thief through the front camera.
- Record the sound around the phone.
- Send. SMS-lock-up.
The cost of such applications is about 300-500 rubles a year, but they increase the chances of returning the device.
