Losing a smartphone is stressful, especially if the device stores personal photos, access to banking applications or work correspondence. Xiaomi smartphones provide several ways to remotely lock, but their effectiveness depends on the preliminary settings and model of the device. If you do not have time to respond quickly, attackers can access your data or even use the phone for fraudulent schemes.
In this article, we will discuss all the current methods of blocking the lost Xiaomi, from standard features of the Mi Cloud to little-known features through IMEI and the carrier. We will pay special attention to the nuances for different regions (Russia, EU, China) and smartphone models, as the algorithms may differ, you will learn how to delete data from the device even if it is turned off, and what to do if the phone is already in the hands of fraudsters.
1.Blocking through Mi Account (Mi Cloud) is the main way
The most reliable and quickest method is to use a linked Mi Account, which works if you have:
- 🔹 Internet enabled (mobile or Wi-Fi)
- 🔹 Activated function Find the device in the settings
- 🔹 The device is not reset to factory settings
To lock the phone:
- Go to i.mi.com and log in to your account.
- Select the Find Device tab.
- The map will show the last known location of the smartphone (if GPS is enabled).
- Click Lock Device and set a new password.
If the phone is turned off, the lock will work on the next Internet connection. Importantly, after locking through the Mi Cloud, you can only unlock the device by entering the password from your Xiaomi account, even after resetting.

2. IMEI locking - does it actually work?
Many users believe that IMEI blocking is a universal solution, but in practice its effectiveness depends on the country and the operator, and Russia has had the Unified Register of Prohibited IMEI system since 2021, but it has limitations:

To block the IMEI through the operator:

3.Removal of data from lost Xiaomi
If your phone has critical data (photos, passwords, banking apps), you can delete it remotely in two ways:
- 📱 Mi Cloud: Go to Mi Cloud → Find the device. Select Erase Device. Confirm the action with your account password. Warning: You can't cancel the action after the reset.
- 🔄 Through Google Find My Device (if your Google account is linked): Go to Google Find My Device. Select your lost device.
Deleting the data will only work when the phone is connected to the Internet, and if the device is turned off, the command will be executed the next time it is turned on.

4. Blocking through a communications operator - an alternative method
