Xiaomi phone lost – how to lock the device and protect data: 5 working ways

Losing a smartphone is stressful, especially if the device stores personal photos, access to banking applications or work correspondence. Xiaomi smartphones provide several ways to remotely lock, but their effectiveness depends on the preliminary settings and model of the device. If you do not have time to respond quickly, attackers can access your data or even use the phone for fraudulent schemes.

In this article, we will discuss all the current methods of blocking the lost Xiaomi, from standard features of the Mi Cloud to little-known features through IMEI and the carrier. We will pay special attention to the nuances for different regions (Russia, EU, China) and smartphone models, as the algorithms may differ, you will learn how to delete data from the device even if it is turned off, and what to do if the phone is already in the hands of fraudsters.

1.Blocking through Mi Account (Mi Cloud) is the main way

The most reliable and quickest method is to use a linked Mi Account, which works if you have:

  • πŸ”Ή Internet enabled (mobile or Wi-Fi)
  • πŸ”Ή Activated function Find the device in the settings
  • πŸ”Ή The device is not reset to factory settings

To lock the phone:

  1. Go to i.mi.com and log in to your account.
  2. Select the Find Device tab.
  3. The map will show the last known location of the smartphone (if GPS is enabled).
  4. Click Lock Device and set a new password.

If the phone is turned off, the lock will work on the next Internet connection. Importantly, after locking through the Mi Cloud, you can only unlock the device by entering the password from your Xiaomi account, even after resetting.

⚠️ Note: If you don't remember the Mi Account password, restore it before you try to lock it. After 5 failed login attempts, the account will be temporarily blocked for 24 hours.

2. IMEI locking - does it actually work?

Many users believe that IMEI blocking is a universal solution, but in practice its effectiveness depends on the country and the operator, and Russia has had the Unified Register of Prohibited IMEI system since 2021, but it has limitations:

Method of blockingHow it worksLimitations
Through the operator (MTS, Beeline, MegaFon, Tele2)Operator Adds IMEI to Blacklist, Phone Loses Network AccessDoes not block Wi-Fi, works only on the network of the operator who has performed the lock
Through the Ministry of Internal Affairs (on the theft claim)IMEI is entered in the all-Russian registry, the phone will not be able to connect to any Russian operatorsThe procedure takes up to 30 days and requires police to be contacted.

To block the IMEI through the operator:

  1. Find your phone’s IMEI (if you haven’t saved the box, check in Settings β†’ About Phone β†’ General Information or through your Mi Cloud account).
  2. Contact the communication salon of your operator with your passport and documents on the phone.
  3. Write a statement of blocking (usually free of charge).

IMEI-The lock doesn't protect the data on the phone -- it only restricts access to the mobile network, and the attackers can use the device over Wi-Fi or reset it to factory settings.

3.Removal of data from lost Xiaomi

If your phone has critical data (photos, passwords, banking apps), you can delete it remotely in two ways:

  • πŸ“± Mi Cloud: Go to Mi Cloud β†’ Find the device. Select Erase Device. Confirm the action with your account password. Warning: You can't cancel the action after the reset.
  • πŸ”„ Through Google Find My Device (if your Google account is linked): Go to Google Find My Device. Select your lost device.

Deleting the data will only work when the phone is connected to the Internet, and if the device is turned off, the command will be executed the next time it is turned on.

What happens after the data dump?
After resetting, the phone will return to factory settings, but: - If Mi Account was enabled, you will need to enter the password from the account at the first turn on (even after reset). - If the Mi Account was not tied, the phone can be activated as a new one. - Data on the phone will be used. SD-The card (if it was installed) will not be deleted!

4. Blocking through a communications operator - an alternative method

If you haven’t used Mi Cloud or forgot your password, you can try blocking it. SIM-It's not going to block the phone itself, but it's going to block the network:

  • πŸ“΅ Interrupting access to mobile Internet and calls.
  • πŸ’³ Block the possibility of payment through a mobile bank (if tied to the SIM).
  • πŸ“ Stop transmitting geodata through the cellular network.
