Losing a smartphone is stressful, especially if itβs a Xiaomi device with important data, photos, and account access. Fortunately, the manufacturer has provided several ways to remotely search, lock, or even remotely control a lost device. In this article, weβll look at all the working methods, including the little-known features of the Mi Cloud, Google services, and alternative solutions for cases when standard tools fail.
Important: Search performance depends on whether the phone has been enabled to the desired settings before loss. If you have never set up Settings β Xiaomi Account β Mi Cloud β Find a device, the chances of success are reduced, but not reduced to zero. We will consider options for both trained users and those who did not have time to configure protection.
This article is relevant for all Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO models (including Xiaomi 13/14, Redmi Note 12, POCO F5, etc.), as well as devices on MIUI 12-14 and HyperOS. If your phone is turned off or discharged, some methods will still help to track it when you next connect to the network.
1. Search through the official service Mi Cloud (the most reliable way)
Mi Cloud is a cloud service from Xiaomi that allows you not only to back up data, but also to track the location of the device in real time, lock it or erase data remotely.
- πΉ The phone was linked to a Xiaomi account (Mi Account).
- πΉ The settings include Find the Device (Settings β Xiaomi Account β Mi Cloud β Find the Device).
- πΉ Device connected to the Internet (mobile network or Wi-Fi).
- πΉ The battery is not completely discharged.
To begin the search:
- Go to i.mi.com and log in with the same account as your lost phone.
- In the menu on the left, select Find Device.
- The map will show the last known location of the phone (if it is online).
- Options available: π Update location to request current coordinates. π Play audio β the phone will emit a loud signal (even in silent mode). π Lock device β set a password or show a message on the lock screen. ποΈ Erase data β full reset to factory settings (irreversible!).
Make sure you are logged in to the correct Mi Account| Check if geolocation is enabled on your phone (if not, coordinates may be inaccurate) | Use your browser in incognito mode to avoid cache issues | If the phone is off, try again every 15-30 minutes - it may turn on when recharging-->
β οΈ Warning: If a phone has been stolen, don't use the Play Sound feature, which could provoke a thief to turn off the device. Better lock it right away and report it to the police with location data.
2. Google search βFind My Deviceβ (if Mi Cloud is not working)
If you haven't set up Mi Cloud or if the phone doesn't show up in Xiaomi, try Google's Find My Device tool, which works if you:
- π± The phone was linked to a Google account (Gmail).
- π Remote Device Search and GeoData are enabled in Google settings (Settings β Google β Security β Find My Device).
- πΆ The device is connected to the Internet.
Instructions:
- Go to google.com/android/find and log in to your Google account.
- At the top of the screen, select the lost device (if multiple gadgets are tied to your account).
- The last known location will appear on the map, and the accuracy depends on the geolocation settings on the phone.
- Options available: π Play sound (5 minutes at maximum volume). π Lock the device with the ability to display a message and a number for communication. π§Ή Erase data (full reset).

β οΈ Warning: If the phone has enabled the post-reset lock feature (FRP), even after a complete data reset, the thief will not be able to activate the device without your Google account. This is additional protection, but it does not work on all Xiaomi models (depending on the version MIUI).
3. Alternative methods of tracking (if standard methods have not worked)
If Mi Cloud and Google donβt show your phoneβs location, try these options:
3.1 Checking the latest activity in the accounts
Many applications capture geolocation when you're using it.
- π Google Maps β The chronology can record the last location.
- π¬ Telegram β Account settings (Settings β Devices) display the last active sessions with IP- addresses.
- πΈ Google Photos β If automatic download is enabled, new images may contain location metadata.
Appeal to the communications operator
If the phone is lost, not stolen, you can ask the operator (MTS, Beeline, Tele2, MegaFon) for data on the latest activity of the SIM- card.
- Contact the communication salon with a passport and a contract for a number.
- Write a statement about the loss of your phone and request information about the last connection to the network (base station).
- The operator can provide an approximate location (accuracy - up to 1-3 km).
What happens if the operator refuses to help?
3.3. Use of third-party applications (if installed)
Some apps have built-in anti-theft features, check if your phone has:
- π‘οΈ Cerberus is one of the most powerful remotely controlled antivirus solutions.
- π Prey Anti Theft β allows you to track the device, take photos from the front camera and lock the screen.
- π± Avast Anti-Theft is part of Avast Mobile Security.
If one of these apps has been installed, log in to their official websites and use search features.
4.What to do if the phone is turned off or discharged
If a lost Xiaomi is off, discharged, or out of range, standard search methods will not work, but there are a few steps that will increase the chances of success:
- Donβt panic and act consistently: Check Mi Cloud and Google Find My Device every 30 to 60 minutes β the phone can turn on when charging or connecting to Wi-Fi. Make sure the phone has enabled the option of Auto Connection to known Wi-Fi networks β this will increase the chances of connecting to the network.
- Activate Power Notifications: In Mi Cloud, click Notify When Connected β you will receive an email when the phone re-appears online. In Google Find My Device, enable the option to Send Last Location When Discharged (if activated in advance).
Prepare for the worst-case scenario:
- Change passwords from important accounts (mail, social networks, banks).
- Contact the bank to block the linked cards (if the phone has been unlocked).
- Write a statement to the police β this will be necessary for insurance (if it was issued) or for an official request for data from the operator.
π‘
If a phone has been stolen, don't try to find it yourself, it's dangerous. Give all the data (IMEI, coordinates, photo of the device) to the police and act through official channels.
β οΈ Warning: If you have used the Mi Cloud or Google Delete feature, it will not be possible to recover information after a reset, and this step should only be used as a last resort when critical data (e.g., bank account access) is stored on your phone.
5. How to lock your phone remotely (even without access to search)
If you canβt track your phone, but you want to prevent access to your data, use these methods:
| Method of blocking | Conditions | Instructions |
|---|---|---|
| Blocking through Mi Cloud | Phone tied to Mi Account | Go to Mi Cloud β Find your device β Lock. Set a new password and message to find. |
| Blocking through Google | Phone linked to Google account | Go to Find My Device β Select the device β Lock. |
| Lockdown SIM-map | You know your phone number. | Call the operator or use your personal account to block the SIM (will alert people who called you to a loss). |
| IMEI lockdown | You know the phone's IMEI | Contact the police or the operator with a statement β the phone will be blacklisted (cannot connect to networks). |
If you donβt remember the phoneβs IMEI, you can find it:
- π On the box from the device (usually a barcode sticker).
- π± In Google settings (Device Activity).
- π§ In a letter from Xiaomi when registering an account (if saved).
6.How to recover data if the phone is not found
If you canβt get your phone back but it had important data on it, try to restore it through backups:
6.1 Recovery via Mi Cloud
If you have synced with Mi Cloud on your phone, you can restore:
- π Contacts - i.mi.com β Contacts.
- π Notes - i.mi.com β Notes.
- πΈ Photos β if you have enabled autoload to Gallery β Mi Cloud.
- π± Settings and apps are linked to a Xiaomi account.
6.2 Restoration via Google
Google automatically reserves:
- π Contacts - contacts.google.com.
- π Calendar - calendar.google.com.
- π Photos β if backup in Google Photos was enabled.
- π± Application data (e.g. WhatsApp, Telegram).
π‘
Even if the phone is lost permanently, backups in Mi Cloud and Google can help restore up to 90% of the data on the new device.
Recovery via computer (if there was a local copy)
If you connected your phone to your PC and made a backup through:
- π₯οΈ Mi PC Suite β Check the backup folder on your computer.
- π ADB Backup β if you use the adb backup command.
- π Third-party programs (e.g. Titanium Backup, Swift Backup).
7 How to protect your phone from future loss
To minimize the risks in the future, set these options up right now (if you have another Xiaomi phone):
Enable "Find Device" in Mi Cloud| Activate "Remote Search" in Google | Set up fingerprint/face lock + PIN-code | Enable automatic backup in Mi Cloud and Google | Record IMEI phone in a safe location-->
Additional protection measures:
- π Set reset protection (FRP) β this will prevent thieves from using the phone after resetting.
- π Enable Google Location History (Settings β Google β Managing Google Account β Data and Personalization β Location History).
- π‘οΈ Install antivirus with anti-theft function (e.g. Kaspersky, Avast).
- π Buy a Power Bank and carry it with you β a dead phone is harder to find.
β οΈ Warning: On Xiaomi models with HyperOS (e.g. Xiaomi 14, Redmi K70), security settings may differ. Check Settings β PaSSWORD and Security β Privacy for additional security options.
