Owning a modern smartphone involves storing vast amounts of sensitive information, from personal correspondence to banking applications. In the Xiaomi ecosystem, a comprehensive security system known as Personal Security or Mi Security is responsible for this. However, there are situations when a user needs to completely remove the account’s link, reset the security settings before selling the device, or get rid of intrusive system restrictions that interfere with work.
The process of deactivating or removing security components requires careful attention, as incorrect actions can lead to locking the device. In this article, we will discuss in detail how to properly manage security settings, delete accounts and clean the device of user data without the risk of turning the gadget into a “brick”.
It’s important to understand the difference between uninstalling an antivirus application, resetting unlock passwords, and completely untying Mi Account. Each of these procedures has its own technical features and implications for smartphone functionality. We’ll look at all scenarios based on current versions of the MIUI shell and HyperOS.
Understanding Xiaomi’s security architecture
The security system in the Chinese manufacturer’s devices is not a standalone application that can be simply removed through a standard controller. It is a deeply integrated module of the Android operating system, modified by the company’s engineers. The centerpiece of control here is Mi Account, which synchronizes location, lock and owner data through cloud servers.
When you set up Personal Security, the phone gets a unique anchor ID, and even if you decide to delete the cache or security application data, the server binding will remain active until authorized untidying, an anti-theft mechanism designed to protect the device in the event of theft.
⚠️ Note: Attempt to delete system security files through root rights or ADB without prior untie the account can lead to locking the device (Mi Cloud Lock), which cannot be removed without a check for purchase.
Users often confuse deleting usage statistics or check history with actual deleting security mechanisms. Clearing logs does not affect the bootloader lock status or the presence of a screen password.
Pre-preparation and backup
Before embarking on radical measures to remove security settings, you need to make sure that important data is safe. The detachment process often involves a complete reset to factory settings (Factory Reset), which will irretrievably destroy photos, contacts and documents.
Use built-in MIUI tools to create a local or cloud copy. Local backup is convenient because it does not require an Internet connection and allows you to save even lists of installed applications and their data. Mi Cloud cloud storage is preferable for saving contacts and notes, as they are automatically synchronized after you log in to a new account.
Make sure to check which data will be deleted. The list often forgets about your Wi-Fi password settings, your call history, and a pair of Bluetooth devices. If you plan to transfer your phone to another owner, make sure that the memory card is on it (SD-card) there is also no personal information, as a standard reset may not affect the external drive.
Deactivation of search and lock functions of the device
The key step is to disable Find Device, which is that while it is active, your smartphone is tightly tied to your account, and any data reset will require you to enter your password the next time you activate, a major barrier that needs to be removed legally.
To do this, go to the settings menu. The path may vary slightly depending on the firmware version, but the logic remains the same. You will need access to the Internet, since the system must send a request to the server to remove the lock flag.
The window that opens will require you to enter your account password, which is a security measure that confirms that the action is performed by the owner, and after successful authorization, the status of the function will change to “Off”.
- 🔓 Open Settings and find the Mi Account section.
- 🔓 Choose the Cloud or Find Device.
- 🔓 Click on the switch and confirm the action with a password.
- 🔓 Wait for the message of successful shutdown of the service.
If you forget your password, you can reset it through a reset procedure on the official mi.com website, but this will require access to the linked phone number or mail. Without this step, further actions to delete the data may be useless, since the device will remain locked at the server level.
Deleting your Mi Account and logging out of Google services
When you disable the search function, you need to remove the account from the trusted list on the device, which will break the sync and remove the authorization tokens for the company's services, and you should also log out of your Google account to not protect FRP (Factory Reset Protection) at the Android level.
The deletion procedure for Mi accounts is done in the same settings section where you previously turned off your device search. At the bottom of the profile screen, there is usually a button “Delete account” or “Sign out” and the system will again warn you about the consequences: the disappearance of synchronized data, the inability to use Mi Pay and other services.
Don't ignore logging out of your Google account. If you reset your settings without deleting your Google account first, the phone will require you to enter your password for that account when you first set up. This is the standard Android theft protection known as FRP Lock.
| Action. | Impact on data | The Necessity of the Internet |
|---|---|---|
| Disable "Find the device" | Removes server lockdown | I'll be sure. |
| Deleting Mi Account | Breaks the synchronization. | Preferably. |
| Deleting Google Account | Removes FRP protection | Not required |
| Resetting settings | Destroys user files | Not required |
Full reset (Hard Reset)
The final step in removing all traces of Personal Security and user data is a complete reset, which returns the smartphone software to the “out of the box” state, and all apps, photos, settings and passwords will be permanently deleted.
There are two ways to reset: through the settings menu if the phone is turned on, or through the recovery mode if access to the system is limited, the first way is more gentle and simple for the average user.
Go to About Phone and find Reset. The system will suggest you select Clear All Data. Be prepared for the fact that the process can take from 5 to 15 minutes depending on the storage capacity and the speed of the drive.
Settings → About Phone → Settings Reset → Clear all data → Enter password → Wait for the resetIf the menu is not available, you can use a keyboard combination. Turn the phone off completely. Then press the volume button and the power button at the same time. When the Mi logo appears, release the power button, but keep the volume up until the Recovery menu appears.
- 🔄 In the Recovery menu, control is carried out by volume buttons (up/down) and power button (select).
- 🔄 Choose a language (usually English or Chinese if there is no Russian).
- 🔄 Go to Wipe Data → Wipe All Data.
- 🔄 Confirm the action by selecting Confirm.
⚠️ Warning: In Recovery mode, the touch screen is not working; navigation is only done with physical volume and power buttons. Don't confuse the buttons so you don't pick the wrong menu item.
Solving activation and blockage problems
Sometimes, after resetting, users are confronted with an activation screen where the phone requires a password from a previously used account, which occurs if the unsetting procedure (described in section two) was performed incorrectly or without Internet access at the time of reset.
If a device requires a password that you don't remember, standard methods can't get around that limitation. This is the level of protection that the manufacturer has put in place. Trying to flash the phone in this state often only results in a repeat of the password request after rebooting.
The only legal way to unlock a device in such a situation is to provide proof of ownership, which can be a check from a store, a warranty card or a box with a pasted barcode (IMEI must match), and you should contact Xiaomi’s authorized service center.
There are also situations where the phone has been bought by hand and has already been blocked by the previous owner, in which case communication with the seller is the only way out, and if the seller does not respond, the device can become unusable, turning into an expensive part.
