Why to block numbers on Xiaomi and what it gives
Spam calls, intrusive SMS messages from banks or unwanted contacts are all issues that every smartphone owner faces. Xiaomi phones (including Redmi and POCO) have built-in tools that allow you to effectively block unwanted numbers without installing additional apps, but not all users know how to use them correctly.
In this article, we will discuss all the current ways to blacklist numbers on MIUI 12-14, including hidden features that are not written about in the official instructions, you will learn how to block not only incoming calls, but also SMS, as well as how to manage the list of blocked contacts through system settings and third-party utilities.
Method 1: Blocking through the โPhoneโ application
The fastest method is to use the standard Phone app (telephone icon) which is suitable for blocking both known contacts and unknown numbers from which the call came. The algorithm works the same on all Xiaomi models, including the Redmi Note 12, POCO X5 and the flagship Xiaomi 13/14.
To put the number on the blacklist:
- Open the Phone app and go to the Journal tab.
- Find the number you want in the list and click on it.
- In the contact card, tap on three points (โฎ) top-right.
- Select the item Block the number and confirm the action.
If the number is not saved in the contacts, the system will offer to add it to the blacklist immediately after the call is completed - just click on the notification Add to the blacklist.

โ ๏ธ Attention: On some firmware MIUI The locking through the phone application does not work for SMS. To block messages, use a method โ2.
Method 2: Managing the blacklist in the settings
If you want to block a number in advance (for example, using a known spam pattern) or edit an existing list, use system settings. This method gives you more control: you can add numbers manually, adjust filtering by keywords, and even block entire ranges of numbers.
Instructions:
- Open Settings โ Applications โ Application Management.
- In the search bar, enter the Phone and select the system application.
- Go to the section "Block numbers" (on some versions of MIUI - "Black list").
- Click Add a number and enter it manually or select from contacts.
Additional options are available in the same menu:
- ๐ Import/export list: you can save the blacklist to a file and transfer it to another phone.
- ๐ Keyword Blocking: Filtering SMS with certain phrases (e.g., "you wonยป).
- ๐ Block log: history of all blocked calls and messages.

To block all numbers from unknown identifiers (e.g., Hidden Number), blacklist the mask # (star-to-star grille).
| Function | Description | Works for MIUI. |
|---|---|---|
| Locking down calls | Completely ignoring incoming challenges | 12, 13, 14 |
| SMS lockdown | Messages do not enter the inbox | 13, 14 |
| Keyword Filtering | Automatically lock SMS with specified phrases | 14 (beta) |
| Imports/exports of list | Transferring the blacklist between devices | 12โ14 |
Method 3: Blocking through the Messages app
If the main problem is spam in SMS, rather than calls, it is more convenient to use the Messages app. Unlike blocking through Phone, this method is guaranteed to stop the delivery of unwanted messages, even if the number is not saved in contacts.
How to block SMS:
- Open the Messages app and find a dialog with an unwanted number.
- Tap on three points (โฎ) top-right.
- Select Details โ Lock down.
- Confirm the action and tick Delete all messages from this number (optional).
For mass blocking of spam:
- ๐ฅ Go to the Spam folder in the Messages appยป.
- ๐ Select a few messages with a long tap.
- ๐ซ Click on the lock icon in the top panel.

โ ๏ธ Note: On some versions MIUI Locking through Messages is not synchronized with the blacklist in the Phone app. To block the number completely, use both methods.
Hidden Opportunities: Blocking with MIUI Security
Little-known fact: in firmware MIUI There is a built-in security application (MIUI Security, which offers advanced blocking features, allows you not only to add numbers to the blacklist, but also to configure rules for automatic filtering of spam from the Xiaomi database.
How to turn on:
- Open Security (the shield icon in the app menu).
- Go to Call Blocking or Spam Protection (name depends on MIUI version).
- Activate the switch to block unwanted calls.
- In the Settings section, select sources to block: Suspicious numbers, Mass mailings or Fraud.
Important: MIUI Security's spam databases update automatically, but only when connected to the Internet. If the lock stops working, check the sync settings under "Database Update."
How to turn off notifications about blocked calls?
Third-party applications for extended locking
If built-in MIUI features arenโt enough (like locking up schedule numbers or creating โwhitelistsโ), use third-party utilities.
- ๐ก๏ธ Truecaller: defines spam numbers by global database, blocks SMS Minus, it requires registration.
- ๐ต Blacklist Plus: allows you to create lock rules by time of day, day of week or geolocation.
- ๐ Call Control: filters numbers by user blacklists and communities.
- ๐ SMS Blocker: specializes in spam blocking-SMS regular-expression.
Before installing, check the application permissions: some utilities request access to Call Log, SMS, and Contacts. On MIUI 14, you may need to manually grant permissions to Settings โ Applications โ Permissions to work correctly.
โ ๏ธ Note: Apps like Truecaller send your contacts to their servers to improve the spam database. If privacy is critical, use offline solutions (e.g. Blacklist Plus).
Frequent problems and their solutions
Even after the number is blocked, Xiaomi users sometimes find that calls or SMS continue to flow.
| Problem. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Calls pass despite blocking | The number is added to the blacklist of โPhoneโ, not โMessagesโ. | Repeat the lock in both applications |
| SMS is sent to the Spam folder | Filtering is enabled, but not full locking | In the Messages settings, turn off Move to spam and enable Block |
| The blacklist was reset after the update | Resetting the settings of the โPhoneโ application | Restore the list from the backup in MIUI Security |
| Third-party blockers are not working | No permission to access calls/SMS | Check permissions in Settings โ Applications โ Special Access |
If the problem persists, try resetting the phone app settings:
- Go to Settings โ Applications โ Application Management โ Phone.
- Press Warehouse. โ Clear the data.
- Reboot the phone and repeat the lock.

On MIUI 14, for stable locking, disable battery optimization for Phone and Messages applications, which will prevent accidental process termination in the background.
