Modern Xiaomi smartphones are equipped with powerful tools to protect personal information, one of which is a hidden gallery, which allows you to remove confidential photos and videos from public access, hiding them from prying eyes when the screen is unlocked. However, users often face a situation when you need to quickly access these files, but the standard path is not obvious or the entrance is blocked.
There are several ways to open a private album, depending on the version of the MIUI firmware or the new HyperOS, and whether you remember the security code installed. In some cases, the security system may require re-authorization through the Mi Account, which raises questions for device owners. Understanding the mechanics of this section of the gallery will help to avoid blocking data.
In this article, we will take a closer look at all the current login methods, including the use of fingerprint, pattern lock and backups, and learn how to set up access in advance to avoid losing important images, and what actions to take if standard methods stop working after a system update.
Standard ways to enter through the Gallery
The most obvious and common method to get into hidden storage is using the standard Gallery app. The interface may differ slightly on different models, such as the Redmi Note or the flagship Xiaomi 13/14, but the logic remains the same. You need to open the application and go to the Albums tab, where image folders are usually displayed.
And then you do a specific swipe action, and you're on the album screen, and you put your finger in the center of the screen, and you pull the list up, and you hold your finger in the top for a split second, and if you do it right, you get a lock animation and a field to type your password or fingerprint, and that's how you activate the hidden gallery mode.
- 📸 Open the Gallery app on the home screen.
- 📂 Go to the Albums tab at the bottom of the interface.
- 👆 Swipe from the bottom up and hold your finger.
- 🔐 Enter a password, pattern lock, or put your finger on the scanner.
⚠️ Note: If nothing happens after the swipe, it is possible that the hidden album function is disabled in the gallery settings or the privacy protection password has not been set before.
💡
If the swipe doesn’t work, try updating the album page by pulling the list down and then repeat the swipe action up.
Sometimes users forget that not only digital code, but also biometrics can be used to log in. If you've previously tied a fingerprint or a face scanner to an application protection feature, the system can request that data, which is especially useful when you need to quickly show a photo without typing long combinations of characters in front of other people.
Use of the Security App
There's a system application called Security in the MIUI shell that manages all the security mechanisms of a smartphone, and if the standard gallery login doesn't work for some reason or the interface is changed, it's the most reliable alternative, and that's where all the privacy settings are concentrated.
Inside the Security app, you need to find the Privacy Protection section, which is the module that encrypts hidden albums, hidden messages, and closed applications. When you go to this section, the system will automatically request authorization, and after you successfully enter the data, you will see a list of all protected categories, including Hidden Albums.
| Function | Location on the menu | Password required |
|---|---|---|
| Hidden album | Security → Protection of confidentiality | Yes (graphic/digital) |
| Hidden files | Conductor → Hidden files | Yeah (coincides with the gallery) |
| Closed annexes | Security → Application Protection | Yes (separate password) |
| Second space | Settings → Second Space | Yes (entry password) |
It's important to understand that the password to log in to this section is often the same for all the security features on your device. If you've changed the code for Application Protection, it's probably the right one to log into a private album, and it's for the user's convenience, so you don't have to remember many different combinations.
Set up biometric access and passwords
For maximum convenience and security, you should set up a biometric login, which allows you to enter a hidden album with one touch, but it is worth considering that biometrics only works as an addition to the main password. If you reboot your phone, you will always have to manually enter the first login, entering a pattern lock or numbers.
To adjust or change access settings, go to privacy settings, change password type, add fingerprints for different hands, or configure facial recognition. Xiaomi stores biometric data in a secure memory sector, making it safe to use even when root rights are available (although root access can disrupt some security features).
- 🔑 Go to "Settings» → «Passwords and security».
- 🛡️ Select the item "Privacy protection».
- 👆 Click on “Change password” or “Add fingerprint».
- ✅ Confirm the action with the current password or Mi Account data.
⚠️ Note: When you change your privacy password, old files encrypted with the previous key may become unavailable.Always use the password change feature inside the menu, rather than resetting your phone's settings.
Why does the system require a Mi-account?
What to do if you forget the password from the album
The situation when the user forgets the password from a hidden album is one of the most stressful. Unfortunately, it is impossible to simply “reset” the password without losing data unless preliminary preparation has been carried out. Xiaomi’s encryption system is designed so that you can not decrypt files with regular means without a key (password).
The only official way to restore access is to use a security question or a linked Mi Account. If you specified a security question when you installed the security, the password entry screen should have a button "Forgot your password?" By clicking on it, you can answer a secret question and ask a new combination. If the Mi Account was linked, the system will prompt you to send a confirmation code or enter a password from the account to reset the protection.
In cases where neither a control question is asked nor an account is tied, you can't restore the files inside the hidden album, not a bug, but a security feature that ensures that even if you steal your phone, attackers can't get your personal photos. The only option is a complete reset of the phone, which, alas, will delete the hidden files too.
☑️ Checking before resetting password
Access problems after system update
Users often find that after updating MIUI or switching to HyperOS, the usual swipe in the gallery stops opening the hidden album, due to changes in the security architecture and renaming of system applications, and in new versions, the functionality of the hidden album could be moved or changed its call.
In such cases, the first thing you should do is check if the security function itself is turned off. Go to Settings → Passwords & Security → Privacy Protection. If the switch is turned off, turn it on. If the function is active but the swipe is not working, try clearing the Gallery and Security app cache through the application management menu.
Also, consider that global firmware versions may have different features than Chinese ones. If you use global firmware, make sure that the region settings are not limited, sometimes changing the region in your phone settings (for example, India or China), setting up the feature and returning the region back.
⚠️ Warning: Do not attempt to delete the Gallery or Security system applications in the hope of resetting the error, which will lead to system instability and possible loss of all data, including regular photos.
Alternative methods of hiding files
If the built-in hidden album feature seems uncomfortable or causes access problems, alternative media file protection options may be considered. Xiaomi offers a "Second Space" feature that creates a completely isolated environment in the phone with its apps and gallery, logged in with a separate fingerprint or password.
Another option is to use third-party applications, vaults, which are disguised as calculators or voice recorders, but it is worth remembering that trusting your data to third-party developers is less safe than using Xiaomi’s built-in system protections, which undergo multi-level testing.
You can also use cloud-based services with additional protection to store really important documents, such as Google Photos with Locked Folder, which allows you to move your photos to a folder that you can only access through the device’s biometrics, and these files are not synchronized with the cloud in normal mode.
💡
Built-in protection MIUI/HyperOS more reliable than third-party applications, as it uses hardware encryption of the phone and does not require the installation of additional software.
