Introduction: Why it is important to act quickly
The loss or theft of a Xiaomi smartphone is not only material damage, but also the risk of leakage of personal data, access to banking applications and social networks. Unlike other brands, Xiaomi devices have a unique Mi Account protection system that allows you to remotely lock your phone, even if you are not using a phone. SIM-The card is replaced, and the device is reset to factory settings.
According to 2023 Kaspersky statistics, 68 percent of stolen smartphones are used by attackers to access financial services in the first 24 hours after the theft. So time plays against you: the faster you lock the device, the better the chances of saving the data and returning the phone. In this article, proven ways to lock, including hidden MIUI features that few people know about.
It is important to understand: standard methods such as calling a lost number or sending a message. SMS They don't work anymore. Modern thieves are just taking it out. SIM-They're mapping or putting the phone in airplane mode, but Xiaomi has tools that can get around those limitations.
Method 1: Blocking through the official Find Device service
The most reliable and quickest method is to use the built-in Find Device service (formerly Mi Cloud), which works even if the phone is offline or offline, thanks to Offline Finding technology, which is activated the next time you connect to the network.
To lock the device:
- Go to i.mi.com and log in to the same Mi Account that is linked to the stolen phone.
- In the Devices section, select the lost Xiaomi (if it is not in the list, check if it is removed by an attacker).
- Click Find the device, then select the option to Lock.
- Set a lock password (if it was not previously) and confirm the action.
After that, a message with your contacts will appear on the phone screen (if you have specified them), and all functions, except calling emergency numbers, will be disabled. Importantly, if the phone has enabled the option "Allow unlock through Mi Account", an attacker will not be able to reset settings without your password.
β οΈ Warning: If you have never set up Find Device or tied your Mi Account to your phone, this will not work.
Check that you are logged in to the correct Mi Account
Make sure your phone has mobile internet or Wi-Fi enabled.
Prepare a backup email to restore access if required.

Method 2: Remote locking with Google Find My Device
If the Mi Account wasnβt tied or the attacker had time to untie it, you can use Google Find My Device, which works on all Android devices, including Xiaomi, but has limitations:
- πΉ The phone must be connected and connected to the internet.
- πΉ Your Google account must be active on your device (even if your Mi Account is disabled).
- πΉ The βFind Deviceβ function should be enabled in the settings (default activated on most models).
Instructions for locking:
- Go to Google Find My Device.
- Select the stolen Xiaomi from the list of devices.
- Click Lock the device and set a new password.
- Add a message with contact information (optional).
The advantage of this method is the ability to track the location of the phone in real time (if it is online). However, unlike Find Device, Google does not block resetting: an attacker can make a hard reset and bypass the lock.

Method 3: IMEI Blocking (for power users)
If the phone is stolen and standard methods don't work, you can lock it down with IMEI, the unique device identifier, which works at the carrier level and completely blocks access to networks, but it has nuances:
- π± IMEI must be known (can be found in a box, check or via *#06# before the theft).
- π‘ The blocking is valid only within one country (in Russia β through the Roskomnadzor base).
- β οΈ The procedure takes up to 5 working days and requires contacting the police.
How to block Xiaomi by IMEI:
- Write a police report about the theft (be sure to specify IMEI).
- Apply for a block via the website imei.nsoc.ru (for Russia) or local equivalent.
- Attach a copy of the passport and documents to the phone (checks, warranty card).
This method won't give you back your phone, but it will make it useless for a thief to call, use the mobile Internet or sell the device legally, but blocking IMEI does not prevent you from using the phone over Wi-Fi.
What to do if IMEI is unknown?
Method 4: Emergency lock through a communications operator
If SIM-The card is still in the phone, you can block it through the carrier, and it won't block the device itself, but it will prevent calls and access to mobile Internet. For Xiaomi, this is important, because many features (like Find Device) require a connection to the network.
How to block SIM-map:
| Operator. | Method of blocking | Time of processing |
|---|---|---|
| MTS | Call 0890 or through your personal account | 5-10 minutes |
| Beeline | Call to 0611 or chat app | 1 hour |
| MegaFon | Call to 0500 or via *105# | momentarily |
| Tele2. | Call 611 or via the website | 30 minutes |
After the lockdown SIM-The attacker will not be able to:
- π Calling or receiving calls (except for emergency numbers).
- π Mobile Internet access (but Wi-Fi will remain available).
- π³ Confirm payments through SMS (unless an alternative method is connected).
β οΈ Note: If the phone has been enabled with dual function SIM, If you lock one card, you don't want to block the other card, and then you have to block both. SIM-map.
Method 5: Remote data erasure (if the phone is hopelessly lost)
If you can't return your phone, but it's storing sensitive data (photos, passwords, banking apps), you can delete everything remotely, and this feature is available through both Mi Cloud and Google Find My Device.
How to delete data via Mi Cloud:
- Sign in to i.mi.com.
- Select the device and press Erase Data.
- Confirm the action with a password from Mi Account.
What happens after erasing:
- π§Ή All files, photos and applications will be deleted.
- π The phone will return to factory settings.
- π± If Find Device was enabled, after the reboot, the phone will appear again in your account.
Importantly, after erasing, it's impossible to recover data even if the phone comes back, so use this method only as a last resort.
π‘
Before erasing data, check if important accounts (such as WhatsApp or Telegram) are linked to the phone. If so, reconfigure the authorization on another device first to avoid losing access.
What to do if the phone is already reset to factory settings?
If an attacker has managed to make a hard reset, the chances of returning the phone are reduced, but do not disappear completely. Xiaomi has an activation lock function (Mi Account Lock), which requires entering the username and password from Mi Account after reset.
How it works:
- π When first turned on after reset, the phone requests Mi Account data that was previously tied.
- π« Without the correct password, the device will not activate (even if you insert a new one). SIM-map).
- π If the lock works, the phone will become a brick for the thief β it can only be used for emergency calls.
To check if activation lock is enabled on your Xiaomi:
- Go to Settings β Accounts β Mi Account.
- Click on the gear icon in the upper right corner.
- Check the Activation Lock status (should be enabled).
If the feature is disabled, it will be almost impossible to return the phone, in which case only IMEI locks or contact the police.
π‘
Mi Account activation lock is the only way to protect Xiaomi after resetting, and if it is disabled, an attacker will be able to freely use the phone.
