Losing or stealing a smartphone is stressful, especially if the device stores personal data, photos or access to banking applications. Xiaomi owners have several effective tools for remotely locking their phone, but their work depends on presets. In this article, we will discuss all the current methods of blocking, including official Mi Account and Find Device services, as well as alternative methods for cases when standard solutions do not work.
It's important to understand that the speed of reaction is critical. The faster you lock a device, the lower the risk of data leakage or unauthorized use. We will describe in detail each step, from checking the account's link to forced reset via Fastboot, if the phone is already in the hands of attackers, and you will learn how to increase the chances of returning a gadget using geolocation and audio signal.
This article is relevant for all Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO base MIUI (including MIUI 14 and HyperOS), and for devices with pure Android (e.g. Xiaomi) 13T Pro for the global market. If your phone is unlocked and your fingerprint or PIN-code not installed β immediately go to the section on emergency measures.
1. Checking preconditions: what should be set up before
Most Xiaomi remote locking methods require that certain features be activated on the phone. If you are reading this article before losing your device, be sure to follow these steps:
- π Mi Account binding: Xiaomi account must be created and confirmed (via email or phone number) without it, blocking through official services is impossible.
- π Find Device. Device search function (Settings) β Mi Account β Find Device) should be enabled. It's the one that allows you to send commands to lock.
- π Synchronization of data. In Settings β Accounts. β Mi Cloud check if synchronization of contacts, notes and other data is enabled, which will help to restore information after blocking.
- π Screen locking, even if you use a pattern lock or PIN, Add a backup unlock method (such as a password) that will make it harder for attackers to access.
If your phone is already lost and these settings have not been activated, go to the section on alternative methods (for example, locking through a carrier or Google Find My Device).
β οΈ Note: If the phone has disabled Find Device, but synced with Google, try locking the device through Google Find My Device, which works even without being linked to Mi Account, but requires the phone to be connected to the Internet.
2. Blocking through the official service Find Device (the most reliable way)
If Find Device has been activated on your phone, you can block it via the Mi Account web interface, which works for all Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO models, including older devices on MIUI 10/11.
Instructions:
- Go to the Mi Account website and log in with the same login that is linked to the lost phone.
- In the menu, select Find Device (or Find Device in the Russian version).
- The map will show the last known location of the phone (if it is connected to the Internet).
- Click on the phone icon and select Lock Device.
- Install a new one. PIN-code (it will act instead of the old one) and confirm the action.
Once locked, a message will appear on the phone screen with your contact number (if you have specified it) and the attacker will not be able to unlock the device without entering a new one. PIN-code, even after rebooting.
Make sure your message is displayed on the phone screen|Try to call an audible signal (if the phone is nearby)|Check the location each time. 10-15 minute|Contact the operator to block SIM-map-->
| Method of blocking | Do you need internet on your phone? | Works after the dump? | Can I change the message on the screen? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Find Device (Mi Account) | Yes. | No (before the first connection to the network) | Yes. |
| Google Find My Device | Yes. | No. | Yes. |
| Blocking through operator | No. | Yes. SIM-map) | No. |
| Fastboot (via PC) | No. | Yes (full reset) | No. |
3.Blocking through Google Find My Device (if Mi Account is not tied)
If you haven't used Xiaomi services, but your phone was linked to a Google account, you can block it through Find My Device, which is less reliable than Find Device, but still better than nothing.
How it works:
- π± Log in to Google Find My Device under the same account you used on your phone.
- π Select the lost device from the list (if there are several of them).
- π Press Safe Mode or Lock the Device.
- π Enter the message and phone number that will be displayed on the lock screen.
Limitations of the method:
- β It does not work if the phone is turned off or disconnected from the Internet.
- β After reset via Recovery, the lock is removed.
- β Some Xiaomi models (for example, for the Chinese market) may ignore Google commands.
π‘
If your phone is connected to Wi-Fi but Find My Device canβt see it, try sending a ping command to your phone. IP-Sometimes it wakes up the device and allows you to locate it.
4. Emergency measures: blocking of SIM-card and bank cards
Even if you can't lock the phone, you have to minimize the financial risk.
- Lockdown SIM-Cards: Call the operator (support numbers: *111# for MTS, *105# for Beeline, *500# for MegaFon, *777# for Tele2). Tell the phone is lost and ask to block SIM-This prevents calls and SMS-- Order a new one. SIM same number (usually free of charge upon presentation of a passport).
- Blocking Bank cards: Use the bank's mobile app (Security or Card Settings section). If there is no app, call the bank hotline (numbers are usually shown on the back of the card).
Change of passwords
- Change your email, social media, and instant messenger passwords (especially if they were saved in your phoneβs browser).
- Revoke access to accounts from your lost device in security settings (e.g., Google or VK).
β οΈ Note: If your phone has enabled autocomplete passwords (e.g., through Google Smart Lock), an attacker may access your accounts. Immediately disable password syncing in Google settings from another device.
5.Extreme measures: forced reset via Fastboot (for power users)
If the phone is already in the hands of attackers, and remote locking is impossible (for example, because of the disabled Find Device), the radical method remains: a complete reset via Fastboot mode, which will delete all data from the device, but also make it useless for the thief.
This will require:
- π₯οΈ Computer with drivers installed ADB/Fastboot (You can download it on the Android website).
- π USB-cable (preferably original).
- π Firmware file for your model (downloaded from the official Xiaomi website).
Instructions (only for users with experience with Fastboot!):
1. Connect your phone to your PC in Fastboot mode (press Power + Vol Down when the device is off).
2. Open the command line in the folder with fastboot and type:
fastboot devices
(Serial phone number should be displayed)
3. execute the command to unlock the bootloader (if it is blocked):
fastboot oem unlock
4. Sweep through the clean firmware with the removal of all data:
fastboot flash all [name file firmware.zip]After this procedure, the phone will be completely reset to factory settings and all data (including photos and apps) will be permanently deleted, a method recommended only if other locking methods are not available and critical data is stored on the phone.
What if Fastboot doesnβt recognize your phone?
6.Extra steps: how to increase the chances of a phone returning
In addition to locking, you can take steps to help return the device:
- π Sometimes the person who lost the phone is willing to return it for a reward. Call from another number and offer a reward (but don't hand over the money in advance!).
- π’ Post in local groups (Vkontakte, Facebook, Telegram) with a photo of your phone, IMEI You can tell me that the phone is locked and you can offer a reward.
- π‘ Check connections. If your phone has connected to public Wi-Fi (such as a cafe or mall), contact the administration - they can help with surveillance cameras.
- π Contact the police, write a statement of theft/loss, stating IMEI The police can request the data from the operator.
You don't have to rely on the honesty of the finder, but these actions increase the chances of the gadget being returned. If the phone was stolen, don't try to contact the thief yourself - give the information to the police.
π‘
Even if you don't find a phone, locking and resetting your data will protect your personal information, and the key is to act quickly before the device falls into the hands of fraudsters.
