Why does Xiaomi phone work “half-power” without a Xiaomi account?
Mi Accounts are not just a way to sync contacts or backup, they are a central node in the Xiaomi ecosystem that unlocks access to the unique features of your smartphone. Without authorization, you can't:
✔️ Use Mi Cloud Storage (5GB for free for photos, notes, recordings).
✔️ Activate advanced MIUI settings (e.g. hidden camera modes or fine-tuning gestures).
✔️ Get firmware updates over the air (on some models without an account updates are blocked).
✔️ Connect Xiaomi smart home devices (lamps, robot vacuum cleaners, sensors).
Moreover, after a hard reset, many Xiaomi, Redmi or POCO models require a mandatory authorization to the Mi Account, which was previously tied, which is a measure of protection against theft, but it also becomes a headache if you forget the login data. In this article, we will discuss all the current ways of logging in, from the standard through the password to bypassing the lock after the reset.
Method 1: Standard login via phone settings
The easiest method is to log in directly to the smartphone menu, which is suitable if:
- 📱 You have a new phone or do not need to be linked to your old account after a reset.
- 🔑 You remember the login (email/telephone) and password.
- 📶 Internet access (Wi-Fi or mobile network).
Instructions:
- Open Settings (the gear icon on the main screen).
- Scroll down and select Accounts and Sync (on some firmware, Mi Account).
- Click Add Add Account → Mi Account.
- Enter the email or phone number associated with the account.
- Enter the password and press Login.
- Confirm the entrance through SMS-Mi Security code or notification (if two-factor authentication is enabled).
If the system requests additional verification (such as a CAPTCHA or confirmation via another device), follow the instructions on the screen. On the POCO F5, Redmi Note 12 and later, a window may appear asking you to confirm the entry via Mi Home or Mi Browser - this is normal.
Make sure your phone is connected to the internet|Check the correct input email/telephone (registration is important!)|Shut down. VPN (It can block Xiaomi servers)|Update the “Mi Account” app to Google Play (if available)
-->
Method 2: Browser Login (if the application is not working)
Sometimes the standard MIUI account menu will give you errors like “Not able to connect to the server” or “Too many attempts”, in which case the authorization through the mobile browser will help:
Open Google Chrome or Mi Browser and go to: https://account.xiaomi.com
Next:
- 🌐 Select a region (Russia or Global, depending on the firmware version).
- 📧 Enter. email/phone.
- 🔐 If it's on 2FA, confirm the entrance through SMS or Mi Security.
- 📱 After successful authorization, go back to your phone settings – your account should be displayed automatically.
Important: If your account does not appear in your phone settings after you log in via your browser, restart your device or manually update your account data in Settings → About Phone → Update MIUI.
💡
If you have an error “Impossible Region” when you log in, try changing the language of the site to English or using a VPN with servers in China/Hong Kong.
Method 3: Sign in after reset (if the phone requires an old account)
Situation: you dropped your phone off to factory settings, and now it asks you to enter the Mi Account, which was previously tied, which is the Mi Cloud Lock, and you can only legally circumvent it if you:
- 🔑 Remember the login and password from your old account.
- 📧 You have access to email/phone-linked.
- 🛡️ You can verify your identity through two-factor authentication.
If your account is yours, but you have forgotten your password:
- On the lock screen, click Forgot your password.
- Choose the method of recovery: via email or SMS.
- Follow the instructions for resetting your password (the link or code will come to the linked email/phone).
- After resetting the password, log in to the phone.
What if the phone is purchased from hand and requires someone else’s account?
Critical information: If the phone was stolen and you try to bypass the lock through informal methods (for example, firmware via EDL or Fastboot), this can lead to a complete loss of IMEI or locking the serial number in the Xiaomi database, in which case the device will become a “brick” without the possibility of recovery.
Method 4: Two-factor authentication input (2FA)
If your account has two-factor authentication enabled, the standard password will not be sufficient, and the system will require additional confirmation via:
- 📱 SMS-tether.
- 🔐 Mi Security (code generator).
- 📧 Backup codes (if you saved them when you set up) 2FA).
How to get in:
- Enter your login and password as usual.
- A confirmation request will appear on the screen. Choose a convenient method (SMS or application).
- If you use Mi Security, open it on another device and copy the 6-digit code.
- Enter the code in the appropriate field on the phone.
If you do not have access to 2FA phone/email:
- Try to restore access through backup codes (they were sent to email when 2FA was activated).
- Contact Xiaomi with proof of account ownership (checks, device serial number).
💡
Two-factor authentication is a prerequisite for unlocking the bootloader on Xiaomi phones, without which you will not be able to install custom firmware.
Mistakes in Mi Account and their solutions
Even with the right data entry, the system can produce errors.
| Mistake. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| I was unable to connect to the server. | Problems with the Internet or servers Xiaomi | Check the connection, disable the VPN, try it later |
| Wrong password | Misprint or outdated password | Restore your password through Forgotten password? |
| Too many attempts. | Blocking after 5 unsuccessful attempts | Wait 30 minutes or restore access via email |
| The device is not supported | The phone firmware does not match the region of the account | Change your account region to account.xiaomi.com or go through the global version of MIUI |
| Account blocked | Suspicious activity or violation of rules | Contact for support with a photo of the document and check on the phone |
If the error persists, try:
- 🔄 Restart the phone and try again.
- 📲 Update the “Mi Account” app on Google Play.
- 🌍 Change your region in your account settings (e.g. from China to Global).
💡
China ROM phones may require Chinese phone number binding, and to avoid this, run Global ROM through Fastboot.
How to log out of Xiaomi account (if you need to change your profile)
Before selling the phone or transferring it to another person, be sure to log out of the Mi Account, otherwise the new owner will not be able to use the device.
- Open Settings → Accounts and Sync → Mi Account.
- Click on your profile (email at the top of the screen).
- Select Account Management (or Account Settings).
- Scroll down and press Out.
- Confirm the exit (a password may be required).
Important: Once logged out, remove the device from the list in your account at account.xiaomi.com. This will prevent your phone from being locked the next time you reset.
⚠️ Note: If you log out of your account but don't delete your device from the Mi Cloud list, after the reset, your phone will require authorization to your account.
