Todayโs Xiaomi smartphone users face the problem of intrusive calls every day. Fraudsters, ad agents and auto callers use a variety of methods to disrupt your peace by offering loans, goods or trying to lure personal data. Owners of Android devices with a MIUI or HyperOS shell have powerful tools to combat this digital noise, which often remains underappreciated.
Including incoming call filtering is not just a convenience, it is a necessary measure of digital hygiene. Standard system tools allow you to create a reliable barrier, weeding out unwanted contacts before the first whistle sounds. It is important to understand that the security mechanisms are built deep into the system and require the correct initial configuration to work effectively in the background.
In this article, we will take a look at all the available ways to activate anti-spam protection, learn how to use the built-in Security features, how to connect databases from Google and third-party services, and how to set up whitelists and blacklists for maximum control over incoming traffic.
Use of the built-in Security application
The first and most reliable tool is the regular Security app, which is pre-installed on every Xiaomi device, and functions as a central hub for managing permissions, cleaning memory and, most importantly in our context, blocking unwanted contacts. To get started, you need to run the utility and find the partition responsible for calling.
Inside the app menu, you go to Antispam or Lock, and that's where the main filter controls are, and the system offers multiple layers of protection, from simply locking hidden numbers to using cloud-based databases of known scammers, activated through switches that change the security status in real time.
Special attention should be paid to setting up smart locks: MIUI algorithms analyze subscriber behavior and can automatically tag suspicious numbers; the smart filter works on the basis of complaints from other users, making it extremely effective against mass calls; however, it requires a stable Internet connection at the time of incoming call.
โ ๏ธ Attention: When you enable aggressive filtering modes, there is a risk of missing an important call from a courier or doctor if their number has previously been marked by other users as spam.
Once the basic functions are activated, the system will silently cut off unwanted calls, you will not hear the beeps, and the caller will receive a โbusyโ signal or a reset connection. In the call log, such attempts may appear as missed with the appropriate mark or not at all, depending on the selected notification settings.
Setting up a blocker through Google Phone
Many modern Xiaomi models use the Google Phone app by default instead of the standard MIUI call. This app has its own highly effective protection mechanism, which is based on the search giant's global database. To activate this feature, open the phone app and click on the three dots in the top right corner.
In the drop-down menu, select Settings, then go to Number Defineer and Spam, and you will be prompted to include two key options: displaying the caller ID and automatic spam filtering, and the second item is responsible for making the phone decide whether to skip the call.
The advantage of using Google's solutions is that if a number is labeled dangerous by at least a few users anywhere in the world, your phone will likely already know about it. Cloud sync allows for instant updates to threat lists without having to manually upload any files.
- ๐ Identification: Displays the name of the organization or the reason for the call instead of an unknown number.
- ๐ซ Autolock: Phone will not ring at all if the number is listed in the spam database.
- ๐ Number search: The ability to manually check an unknown number through Google search directly from the call interface.
It is important to note that some features may require permission to use location or contact data, which is part of the number verification process. The user can always disable sending spam reports in the privacy settings of the application itself, while retaining the function of receiving updated databases.
๐ก
For maximum efficiency, use a bundle: a built-in MIUI filter for SMS and spam, and a Google filter for voice calls. They don't conflict with each other.
Integration of third-party services and databases
Staff funds are sometimes not enough, especially if you encounter local scammers who have not yet made it to Googleโs global databases, and in such cases, specialized applications such as Yandex, Kaspersky Who Calls, or Truecaller come to the rescue, and these programs work in conjunction with system telephony, intercepting incoming calls and checking the number with their database.
The process of installing protection through a third-party application usually requires wide permissions. Once you install Yandex or an analog, you need to go to the settings of the application itself and enable the function "Number Define" or "Call Blocker". Android will redirect you to the system call management menu, where you will need to select the installed application as the main filter.
Third-party algorithms are often more flexible, such as those that can define caller categories: Delivery, Taxi, Banks, Marketing, allowing you to set up selective lockdowns, such as blocking only marketing calls but skipping delivery services, a granularity that is not available in the basic software versions.
| Service | Type of database | Internet is required | Fees paid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Phone | Global | Yes (for updates) | No. |
| Yandex | Regional (CIS) | Yes (constantly) | Expanded reports |
| Kaspersky | Antivirus database | Yes. | Full version |
| Truecaller | Global crowdsourcing | Yes. | No advertising. |
Consider that installing additional number detectors can increase battery consumption, as every call you make makes a request to the server, but on modern Snapdragon and MediaTek processors used in Xiaomi, this effect is almost imperceptible to the user.
โ๏ธ Checking the filtering settings
Creation and management of blacklists
Sometimes automatic systems fail or miss a specific number that annoys you, and then you have manual Blacklist control, which is the most reliable way to guarantee that you will stop calls from a particular caller, whether it is a former employer, an intrusive acquaintance or collectors.
There are several ways to add a number to the blacklist: the fastest way is to open a call history, click on the information icon (i) or menu next to the number, and select Lock. The alternative is through phone settings: Settings โ Apps โ Phone โ Locked numbers. Here you will see a full list of all rejected contacts.
The blacklist functionality on Xiaomi allows you not only to block, but also to adjust the system reactions. You can choose whether the caller will hear the beeps before reset, or the connection will break instantly. There is also an option to lock on the mask, for example, banning all numbers starting with certain numbers, which is useful for combating bots that change the last digits of the number.
โ ๏ธ Note: Adding a number to a blacklist does not block SMS-For complete isolation, you need to separately activate the filtering of messages in the anti-spam settings.
List management also includes the ability to create exceptions: If you have blocked the entire Unknown Numbers category but are waiting for an important call, you can temporarily disable the lock or add a specific number to the White List, which has the highest priority and passes through any filters.
Filtering of hidden and unknown numbers
A special category is from hidden numbers (No Caller ID) or from numbers not saved in your phone book. Fraudsters often use cloaking technologies to bypass simple blockers. MIUI and HyperOS have separate switches to combat this.
In the lock menu, find the option โBlock hidden numbersโ or โBlock unknowns.โ Activating this feature will cause any call where the subscriber ID is not transmitted by the carrier to be automatically rejected, which is a radical but effective measure if spam attacks come from such sources.
There is also a Contact Only mode (or a White List) that, when turned on, will only accept calls from those in your address book, and everyone else, even if they are not labeled as spam, will not be able to reach you, which is ideal for vacation periods or when you need a full digital detox.
- ๐ต Hidden numbers: Blocks calls without number identification (CLIR).
- ๐ Contacts only: Misses calls exclusively from the phone book.
- ๐ International: A separate option to block calls from abroad if you are not waiting for calls from other countries.
Use this regime with caution in your daily life.

Journal analysis and fine-tuning
Once you have enabled all the necessary protections, it is important to periodically check their effectiveness. Security or Phone maintains a detailed log of blocked events. Analysis of this log helps you understand what types of calls are missed and adjust your settings.
If you notice that important calls are skipped, check if they fall into the category of "Advertising" or "Telemarketing" wrong. AI systems sometimes get it wrong. You can tag numbers like "Don't spam" by training the algorithm and improving the filter for yourself and other users.
You can also set the blocker schedule in the settings, for example, you can set up automatic Do Not Disturb mode, blocking all calls (except selected contacts) at night, from 23:00 to 07:00, which provides uninterrupted sleep, even if the spam databases are updated at night.
For advanced users, settings through USSD-codes and hidden menus, but in modern versions of Android, most of these features are transferred to the GUI for convenience.

Regular monitoring of the lock log allows timely detection of false positives and correction of lists, providing a balance between protection and availability of communication.
