Protecting your personal data on a Xiaomi smartphone starts with a strong password, and even if you handle your phone carefully, there is always a risk of loss or theft, and without a password, an attacker will have access to photos, emails, banking apps, and social media. In this article, we will analyze all ways to protect the lock screen on devices with MIUI β classically PIN-before fingerprint and face recognition.
The manufacturer offers several locking options: a pattern lock, a digital password, an alphanumeric code and biometrics. The choice depends on the balance between convenience and security. For example, a fingerprint will unlock the phone in a split second, but it can be fooled with a cast. And a complex alphanumeric password is reliable, but it is inconvenient to enter it every time. We will tell you how to configure each method, and also give tips for creating reliable combinations.
Preparing the phone before setting the password
Before you set a password on Xiaomi, follow a few important steps to help avoid unlocking problems in the future.
First, link your Mi Account to your device. Without it, you can't reset your password if you forget it. Go to Settings β Xiaomi Account and log in. If you don't have an account, register it directly on your phone. We also recommend that you enable two-factor authentication in your profile settings at account.xiaomi.com.
Second, check the version of MIUI. Old firmware (below MIUI 12) may not have some features, such as facial recognition. Update in Settings β About Phone β System Update. If the update is not available, use alternative locking methods.
- π Sync contacts and files with the Mi or Google cloud, which will help you recover data after a reset.
- π± Check the fingerprint sensor (if you plan to use it to unlock it). β Password and security β Fingerprint.
- π Charge your phone at least 50%. Password setting and biometrics setting can take 10-15 minutes.
β οΈ Warning: If you bought your phone with your hands, be sure to reset to factory settings before setting your password. The previous owner could have linked the device to their Mi Account, which blocks some features.Reset is done in Settings β The phone. β Resetting settings.
Method 1: Installation PIN-code-code
The simplest and most common method β PIN-It's a code or a digital password that's suitable for most users because it's quick to configure and doesn't require any additional hardware (unlike a fingerprint), and it's a low level of security if you use simple combinations like 1234 or 0000.
To establish PIN-Xiaomi:
- Open Settings (the gear icon on the main screen).
- Go to the Password and Security section (on some models β Screen Lock).
- Select Screen Lock β PIN or Password.
- Enter the combination twice to confirm.
- Set up additional parameters: π’ Length PIN-4 to 16 digits, the longer the more reliable. β±οΈ Autolock (after 5 seconds, 1 minute, etc.). π± Show notifications on a locked screen (can be turned off for privacy).
For maximum security, choose an alphanumeric password (with letters and characters) that is harder to pick up but harder to remember. Use password managers like Bitwarden or KeePass to keep the combination in mind.
Remember the password or save it in a safe place
Autolock is activated in 30 seconds or less
Disabled notifications with confidential information on the locked screen
Checked the work of unlocking after restarting the phone-->
β οΈ Note: If you are using a simple PIN-A code (e.g., date of birth), can be picked up by an attacker in a few attempts. Xiaomi has a delay after 5 incorrect inputs, but this does not stop experienced hackers. Use combinations without obvious logic, for example, 7492 instead of 1984.
Method 2: pattern lock - pros and cons
A pattern lock is a pattern that is drawn with your finger on a screen, and it's popular because of its convenience: many users remember visual circuits better than numbers, but it has serious security vulnerabilities:
- π Casts on the screen. On a dirty or wet display, there are finger marks that can be used to reconstruct the pattern.
- π₯ A pattern lock is easier to see than a input. PIN-code.
- π’ Limited number of combinations. Even with maximum complexity (9 points), there are fewer unique patterns than a 6-digit one. PIN-code.
If you still want to use a pattern lock, follow the instructions:
- Open Settings β Password and Security β Screen Lock.
- Select the pattern lock.
- Draw the pattern twice. Minimum length is 4 dots, recommended 6-9.
- Confirm the establishment of a backup PIN-code (you will need it to unlock if you forget the pattern).
To improve the security of the pattern lock:
- π§Ή Regularly wipe the screen with a dry wipe to remove traces.
- π Change the pattern every 2-3 months (in the lock settings there is an option to change the key).
- π Do not use the key in public places where you may be seen.
| Type of lockdown | Level of security | Convenience | Suitable for |
|---|---|---|---|
| PIN-code (4 digits) | ββ | βββββ | Quickly unlock in a safe environment |
| PIN-code (6+ figure) | ββββ | ββββ | Everyday use |
| pattern lock | ββ | ββββ | People with good visual memory |
| Alphabetical digital password | βββββ | ββ | Storage of critical data |

If you often forget passwords, create an encrypted prompt in your phone notes, such as writing down phrases like "First letters of the city where I lived" or "Grandma's Birthdate + 100" instead of the code itself.
Method 3: Biometric unlocking (print and face)
Xiaomi offers two types of biometric authentication: fingerprint and facial recognition, which are convenient but have limitations:
- π The fingerprint only works on scanner models (e.g. Redmi Note 11 Pro, POCO X5 On budget phones (e.g. Redmi) A2) This function may not be.
- π€ Facial recognition is less reliable β it can be fooled by a photograph or mask (especially on older models).
To adjust the fingerprint:
- Go to Settings β Password and Security β Fingerprint.
- Enter the current one. PIN-code or password (if already installed).
- Follow the instructions on the screen: Put your finger on the scanner from different angles.
- Add a spare print (such as the index finger of the other hand) in case the main finger is damaged.
To adjust facial recognition:
- Open Settings β Password and Security β Face Recognition.
- The scanner will take several pictures of your face from different angles.
- Enable the option to Require Eyes Opening (if any) to prevent unlocking from the photo.
On models with infrared scanners (such as the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra), facial recognition works even in the dark and with a mask. On budget phones, this feature can turn off in low light.
β οΈ Warning: Biometric data is stored in a secure chip on the phone and not transmitted to the cloud, but if an attacker gains physical access to the device, they can trick the face scanner using the device. 3D-For critical data (bank applications, cryptocurrency wallets) use additional PIN-code.
Method 4: Password through Mi Account (for forgetful)
If you forget your lock password, you can reset it through your Xiaomi account, which only works if:
- π± Phone tied to Mi Account.
- π Internet access (via Wi-Fi or mobile network).
- π Remember the login and password from the account.
To unlock your phone through your Mi Account:
- On the lock screen, enter the wrong password 5 times in a row.
- Will you see a message Forgot your password? β click on it.
- Enter the details from your Xiaomi account (email or phone number + password).
- Confirm unlocking via SMS or email (if two-factor authentication is enabled).
If you donβt remember your account information, restore it to account.xiaomi.com, which requires access to your email or phone number, and you can call Xiaomi for support at the very least, but the recovery process can take up to 7 days.
What if your phone is not linked to your Mi Account?
Method 5: Hidden Security Features in MIUI
MIUI offers additional security settings that many users are unaware of, which help protect data even when the phone falls into the wrong hands.
- π Application locking. You can set a separate password for messengers, gallery or banking applications. β Password and security β Application lockdown.
- π± Second space: Creates a separate profile with other applications and data, useful if you have multiple people using your phone. β Special facilities β Second space.
- π¨ Regime. SOS. When you triple press the power button, the phone sends SMS with trusted-contact coordinates. β Password and security β Emergency call SOS.
Another useful feature is phone encryption, which protects data even if an attacker extracts the flash memory and connects it to another device, to enable encryption:
- Go to Settings β Password and Security β Phone Encryption.
- Set a lock password (if it is not already there).
- Connect your phone to charge β the encryption process can take 30-60 minutes.
- Don't interrupt! This can lead to data loss.
Once encrypted, the phone will ask for a password every time it boots, which adds an extra layer of protection, but slightly increases the turn on time.
π‘
Encrypting your phone is the most reliable way to protect your data, but you can't turn it off without resetting to factory settings. Use this feature only if you're willing to remember a complex password.
Frequent Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Many Xiaomi users have problems setting passwords, and here are the most common mistakes and ways to fix them:
- β Forgot the password after flashing it over. MIUI through Fastboot or custom recovery, the lock password can be reset.Always back up before firmware in Settings β Additionally. β Backup and reset.
- β The fingerprint scanner on many Xiaomis is built into the power button or under the screen, and if it stopped working after the repair, check if the scanner plume is connected.
- β The phone asks for the old password after the reset. If you reset your phone through Recovery, but it requires you to enter the password from the previous Mi Account, then the device is tied to the account).
Another common problem is self-locking after multiple mistyping, and on Xiaomi, after 10 failed attempts, the phone can lock for 24 hours.
- Wait for the specified time or unblock through the Mi Account.
- If the account is not tied, you will have to reset through Recovery (see spoiler above).
