Xiaomi smartphone owners often face the need to restrict access to certain phone book entries, which may be due to the desire to keep personal correspondence confidential or to protect data from children and colleagues. The standard MIUI interface offers several effective ways to solve this problem, but they are not always obvious to the average user.
You can hide a number in a variety of ways, from using built-in concealment features to transferring data to secure folders. Each method has its own features, advantages and disadvantages depending on the version of the operating system and device model. Understanding these differences will allow you to choose the most appropriate option for protecting confidential information.
In this article, we will take a look at all the current methods available on the brand’s smartphones, learn how to configure contact access, use guest mode and use third-party solutions for maximum security.
Use of the built-in function of concealing contacts
The easiest and fastest way is to use the built-in MIUI shell feature, which allows you to hide selected numbers directly in the Contacts app, which requires no additional software installation and works consistently on most devices, but it is worth remembering that the records that are hidden in this way are not deleted, but only become invisible in the general list.
To activate the function, you need to open the Contacts app and go to the display settings. In some firmware versions, this option is called Hidden Contacts or Contact Filter. Once you turn on the mode, you will need to set a password to protect or use fingerprint unlock.
Once set up, a special section or filter will appear in the contact list, which can only be accessed after authorization, and all numbers placed in this section will not be displayed as standard when incoming calls, and the history of calls will also be hidden from prying eyes.
⚠️ Note: If you forget the password from hidden contacts, it may not be possible to restore access to them without resetting data or using a Mi Account.
It is important to note that on global firmware versions (Global ROM), this feature can be called differently or moved to the security menu, and in Chinese versions of MIUI, access to it is usually more direct and is located in the top menu of the application.
Configure through the Security app
The central element of access control in Xiaomi smartphones is the system application “Security”. This is where the main security tools (privacy) are concentrated. To get started, open the application with the shield icon and find the section “Privacy Protection” or “Hide contacts”.
In this section, you can select the specific numbers from the phone book you want to hide, and the system will suggest creating a separate privacy password, which may differ from the screen unlock password, which provides an additional layer of data protection.
☑️ Configuring Hiding Through Security
Once the security is activated, a special folder or section with a question or lock sign will appear in the call log and contact list, and the contents of this folder will only be accessed after you enter a password or scan your fingerprint, and all incoming and outgoing calls from these numbers will also be hidden from the general history.
Keep in mind that the hidden application "Security" does not encrypt the data itself, but only limits its display in the interface. When connecting the phone to the computer in debugging mode or in-depth analysis of the file system, this data can theoretically be detected by specialists.
Guest mode and second space
For radical data separation and complete contact isolation, Second Space is ideal, which creates a virtual copy of the system inside your smartphone with its apps, gallery and phone book, and switching between spaces is like between different devices.
To use this method, go to Settings → Second Space and follow the instructions for creating a new profile. You can set the entrance to the second space with a separate fingerprint, making the switching instant and invisible to outsiders.
In the second space, you only create or import contacts that are supposed to be secret, but the main space is completely accessible with a regular dial, and it's ideal for separating work and personal contacts, or for handing the phone to children.
⚠️ Note: Creating a second space takes up extra memory on the device. Make sure your Xiaomi has enough free space for two profiles to function normally.
An alternative to a full second space is a temporary Guest Mode, if it's supported by your version of Android, which is a mode where the guest doesn't see your contacts and apps, but you can't use them while in this mode, which is more of a temporary protection measure than a permanent solution.
What is the difference between the Second Space and the Guest Mode?
Hiding through third-party applications
If MIUI is not enough, Google Play offers a variety of customized apps to protect your contacts, such as Hide Contacts, Private Contacts or Calculator Vault, which provide advanced functionality, including database encryption and (cloaking) other applications.
The way these applications work is to import selected contacts into a secure container and then remove them from the main phone book, access the container through a pin code, a pattern lock or biometrics, and some applications allow you to hide the icon of the protection application itself.
Using third-party software provides flexibility, but requires careful design. A poor application may have vulnerabilities or transfer data to third-party servers. Always check the permissions the program requests when installing.
| Annex | Type of protection | Advertising | Difficulty setting up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private Contacts | Password/Printprint | Got it. | Low. |
| Calculator Vault | Pin code (calculator) | There is. | Medium |
| Hide Contacts Pro | Biometrics/pattern lock | No. | Low. |
| Cryptomator (for files) | Encryption of AES | No. | Tall. |
When choosing an application, pay attention to the possibility of backing up secure contacts. In the event of an application failure or data loss, you can restore important numbers from the backup, if such a feature is provided by the developer.
💡
Before removing contacts from the main phone book, be sure to export them in.vcf format and save the file in a safe place or send yourself to the messenger.
Work with SIM-map and cloud services
Another level of control over contacts is the management of their location. SIM-A contact in a computer, in a phone's memory, or in a cloud sync (Google Contacts, Mi Cloud) does not mean that a contact is lost from another device.
If the number is retained SIM-It's almost impossible to hide it with software without transferring it, and it's recommended that you copy all the important numbers to your phone or Google account, and then hide them with the system, and that gives you more control over visibility.
When using Google or Xiaomi cloud sync, hiding a contact on a device may not hide it in the web version of contacts. For complete privacy, you need to check your visibility settings in the cloud interface. Removing a contact from the cloud will remove it from all synced devices.
For users who want maximum anonymity, there is a method of creating a separate, “clean” Google account for secret contacts only, and syncing this account only happens when you need to make a call or send a message, which minimizes the digital footprint.
⚠️ Note: When you reset your phone to a factory setting, all locally stored hidden contacts will be lost if they are not synced to the cloud.
💡
Local contact hiding does not protect data from access through a cloud account if synchronization is enabled.
