POCO steerable MIUI 14/15, including cases where the old password is unknown.
It is important to understand that the procedure differs depending on the type of lock: it can be a classic one. PIN-The code, pattern lock, or password from your Mi Account also plays a role in whether you remember your current password or not, and we'll look at both scenarios and how to avoid common errors that can lead to a device being completely locked to require a reset before factory settings.
1. When you may need to change your password to Xiaomi
Repeated password changes are not paranoia, but a recommendation from cybersecurity professionals, and these are typical situations where it is necessary:
- π Planned rotation of passwords β experts advise to update PIN-codes and graphics keys every 3-6 months, especially if the phone is used to work with banking applications.
- π± Buying a used phone β even if the seller reset the settings, it is better to set your password immediately after the first setting.
- π¨ Suspicion of compromise β if the phone has been in the wrong hands (for example, in a service center) or you have connected to public Wi-Fi networks.
- π Change the type of lock β switch from the pattern lock to the PIN or vice versa for convenience.
- π Forgetfulness β if you often enter your password incorrectly, the system may lock your device at 30+ minute.
On Xiaomi devices with MIUI 14/15, the lock password is tied to the Mi Account, but that doesnβt mean it canβt be changed separately. However, if you forget both the screen password and the account data, it will be extremely difficult to unlock the phone β you will need to contact the service center with proof of ownership.
β οΈ Note: If you use biometric unlocking (fingerprint or facial recognition), changing your password will automatically disable these methods. β Passwords and security.
2. How to change your password if you know the current one
This is the simplest scenario. You don't need any additional tools, just the phone itself and access to the settings. The instructions are suitable for all modern models: Xiaomi 13/14, Redmi Note 12/13, POCO F5/X5 and others on MIUI 14/15.
Open the Settings (cog icon on the desktop) and follow the path:
- Go to Passwords and Security.
- Select Screen Lock.
- Enter the current password/PIN/pattern lock for confirmation.
- Click Change the screen lock password.
- Select a new type of lock (PIN, password or pattern lock) and set it.
- Confirm the changes with re-entry.
If you want to delete your password completely, in step 4, select No β but remember that this will reduce the security of the device. On some models (for example, Xiaomi 13 Ultra), the system may require you to associate your Mi Account before disabling the password.
Remember your current password (if you forget the new one, it will be difficult to restore access)
Make sure your phone is at least 30% charged (to keep the process running out of order)
Disable VPN (sometimes interferes with synchronization with Xiaomi servers)
Remember or write down a new password in a safe place

You'll need:

- π Cable USB (preferably original).
- π οΈ The Mi Flash Tool program or ADB (for advanced users).
Step-by-step instructions for resetting through ADB:
1. Connect your phone to your PC and start the command line (Windows) or terminal (Mac/Linux).
2. Enter a command to check the connection:

adb reboot recovery
4. From the Recovery menu, select Wipe & Reset β Wipe All Data (this will delete the password but save files to internal memory).
5. Reset the device. If the ADB wasn't turned on in advance, it won't work, so you'll only have a full reset via Fastboot, but it will delete all the data.
What if the ADB does not recognize the device?
5. How to change the password from the Mi Account
The password for your Mi Account is a separate story, and you can change it even if you don't remember the current one, but it requires access to a linked email or phone number. Here's how to do it:
Method 1: Through the Xiaomi website
- Go to account.xiaomi.com.
- Press Forgot Your Password?
- Enter the email or phone number associated with the account.
- Choose the recovery method: SMS or email.
- Enter the new password twice and save the changes.

If you have another phone with the Mi Account app installed, you can change your password through it:
- Open the app and log in (if possible).
- Go to Account Settings β Security β Change password.
- Confirm the action via SMS or email.
After changing the Mi Account password, remember to update it in your phone settings (Accounts β Mi Account section), otherwise you may have synchronization problems.

If you often forget passwords, use a password manager (like Bitwarden or KeePass) to save not only the password from your Mi Account, but also backup codes to restore access.
6. Frequent mistakes and how to avoid them
When you change your password to Xiaomi, users often face typical problems, and we have collected the most common ones and ways to solve them:
| Mistake. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| No new password will be accepted | Too simple (e.g. 1234 or 0000) | Use a combination of 6+ characters with numbers and letters |
| Phone asks for old password after reset | Incomplete reset via Recovery | Completely reset (Wipe All Data) |
| No SMS to restore your Mi Account | Phone number changed or blocked | Use a backup email or contact Xiaomi for support |
| After changing the password, the fingerprint does not work. | Biometrics dropped | Register the fingerprint again in Settings β Passwords and security |
Another common problem is that the phone requires a password after the firmware is installed, which happens if a factory reset was activated via Mi Cloud before the firmware is installed, in which case the device can only be unlocked through the official Xiaomi service with the provision of a purchase check.

If you are buying a used Xiaomi phone, always check if it is untied from the previous Mi Account. To do this, go to Settings β About Phone β Device Status and make sure that the Mi Account section has a βNot tiedβ status.

- π Update. MIUI Up to the latest version β security vulnerabilities are often fixed in new versions.
- π‘οΈ Install an antivirus (such as Avast or Bitdefender) to protect against phishing.
- π Turn off autocomplete passwords in your browser if you use your phone for financial transactions.
If you travel frequently, we recommend that you also disable automatic connection to open Wi-Fi networks in settings (Wi-Fi β Additional β Autoconnection to open networks) This will reduce the risk of data interception through fake access points.
