Why geolocation isnβt always a reliable way to find a smartphone
Losing a phone is stressful, especially if it stores important data or access to accounts. Xiaomi owners (including the Redmi, POCO and Mi line) have several tools to locate the device by geolocation, but their effectiveness depends on many factors: whether GPS is on, whether the phone is connected to the Internet, whether the battery is dead. Even if you activate all the security features in advance, there is no guarantee that you will be able to accurately determine the location of the device in real time.
In this article, we will look at all the current ways Xiaomi tracks geolocation, from official Mi Account services and Google Find My Device to alternative methods using IMEI. Also, we will find out why sometimes the phone does not appear on the map, and what to do if it is stolen.
If you are reading this article after your phone goes missing, immediately go to the section βEmergency Actions in the event of theft or lossβ β it contains the steps to follow first.
The Mi Account and Find My Device
The most reliable search tools for Xiaomi are built-in services from the manufacturer and Google, which only work if you have:
- πΉ Mi Account enabled (linked to device)
- πΉ Activated synchronization Settings β Mi Account β Synchronization
- πΉ Geolocation access allowed for system services
- πΉ The phone is connected to the Internet (mobile data or Wi-Fi)
If one of these conditions is not met, the chances of a successful search are dramatically reduced. Let's look at both methods in detail.
1. Search through Mi Account (i.mi.com)
Xiaomi's Find Device service allows you not only to see the last known location of the phone, but also to lock it, erase data or turn on the beep.
- Go to i.mi.com and log in with the same account that is linked to your lost phone.
- From the menu, select Find Device (or Find Device in the Russian version).
- The map will show the last known geo-location, and if the phone is online, the coordinates will be updated in real time.
- Additional options: π Turn on the sound β the phone will start to ring loud (works even in silent mode). π Block β set the password on the lock screen. ποΈ Erase data β complete reset to factory settings (irreversible!).
Make sure your phone is tied to your Mi Account|Check if geolocation is included in the settings|Make sure your phone has internet (mobile or Wi-Fi)|Try updating the page if the coordinates donβt appear.-->
β οΈ Note: If the attacker resets the phone to factory settings, the Mi Account binding will be removed, and it will be impossible to track the device through this service. IMEI (see section below).
2 Search through Google Find My Device
If you have a Google account login on your Xiaomi phone, you can use Find My Device, which works similarly to Mi Account, but has its own features:
- π It shows the location with an accuracy of several meters (if the location is GPS included).
- π It works even when the internet is off if the phone has been online in the last 24 hours (shown by the last known dot).
- π« It does not allow to erase data on devices with MIUI 12th version (due to manufacturer restrictions).
Instructions:
- Open Find My Device in your browser.
- Select the lost device from the list (if there are several).
- If the phone is offline, it will show the last known dot.
- Available action: π Play the sound β the phone will ring for 5 minutes. π Lock the device β set the password on the screen. ποΈ Erase data β reset to factory settings (does not work on all Xiaomi models).
π‘
If your phone is off but has been online in the past day, try updating the Find My Device page in 10-15 minutes. Sometimes the device is briefly connected to the network (for example, when turned on to check notifications), and the service manages to fix its location.
Search by IMEI: myths and reality
Many users believe that the unique IMEI ID can track a phone anywhere in the world, and in practice, it's not exactly true. Yes, the IMEI is tied to the device and doesn't change even after you reset, but:
- π΅ Communications operators do not provide location data on IMEI Individuals (only at the request of law enforcement agencies).
- π΅οΈββοΈ Services like Β«IMEI-The trackers are scams on the Internet, they don't have access to the operators' databases.
- π‘ Geolocation by IMEI It is possible only through special services or with the consent of the operator (for example, in a criminal case).
But IMEI can still help you find a phone.
- Lock the phone from the operator: Contact your carrier's salon (MTS, Beeline, MegaFon, Tele2) with your passport and IMEI code. They lock the device on their network, and it will not be able to call or access the Internet. This will not return the phone, but will make it useless for the thief.
- Report to police: IMEI will be required to bring a theft case.Police can request data from the operator, but it is a lengthy process and the result is not guaranteed.
- Check in the used markets: Some services (such as Avito or Yula) block ads with stolen IMEIs, but this does not always work.
π Where to find out. IMEI?
- On the phone box (usually on a barcode sticker).
- In settings: Settings β About the phone β General information β IMEI.
- Phone keyboard *#06# (works even without it) SIM-map).
What to do if IMEI is unknown?
Alternative methods: when standard methods do not work
If the phone is turned off, disconnected from the Internet, or reset to factory settings, official services are useless, and in such cases, alternative methods can be tried, but their effectiveness is lower.
1. Tracking through SIM-map
If you're still on your phone SIM-And the map, the operator can provide data about the last base stations that she's connected to, which is not an exact geolocation, but it will help narrow down the search area:
- Please contact the operator's office with a passport.
- Write a statement about the provision of data by phone number.
- The operator will provide a list of base stations with time stamps (usually within the last 3-7 days).
β οΈ Note: Operators are not required to provide such data on demand, most often only if there is a report to the police about theft.
2. Social networks and messengers
If the phone was installed messengers (WhatsApp, Telegram, Viber) or social networks (Vkontakte, Facebook), you can try to track the activity:
- π± WhatsApp Web: If your phone connects to the Internet, youβll see your status online or the time of your last visit.
- π VK/Instagram: Account settings may display the last activity (city or region).
- π Telegram: if the function βLast Activityβ is enabled, you can see the approximate time online.
This method does not give exact coordinates, but it will help to understand whether the phone is used.
3. Specialized applications (if installed in advance)
Some data protection applications have a hidden tracking function, such as:
- π‘οΈ Cerberus β allows you to track your phone even after resetting (requires root rights).
- π Prey Anti Theft β sends photos from the front camera and coordinates when connecting to the Internet.
- π‘ Where's My Droid - can determine the location of the GPS net.
If you havenβt installed these programs before losing your phone, theyβre useless.

Emergency actions in case of theft or loss
If you are sure that your phone is stolen or you canβt find it, act quickly:
- Block it. SIM-Card: Call the operator (support numbers: MTS - 0890, Beeline - 0611, MegaFon - 0500, Tele2 - 611) and ask to block the card. SMS (For example, to confirm payments).
- Change your passwords: Change your passwords immediately: π Mi Account (so that the thief can't untie the device). π Google Account (if your phone is tied). π Social networks, mail, banking applications.
Call the police.
Write a report of theft (if the phone is stolen) or missing, and include IMEI, serial number and tied Mi Account, which increases the chances of the phone being recovered if it is found.
Check the insurance.
If the phone was insured (for example, through Sberbank, AlphaInsurance or when buying in the cabin), contact the insurance company.
π‘
If your phone is stolen, DO NOT try to contact the thief yourself, it is dangerous and can interfere with the work of law enforcement, it is better to pass all the data to the police and follow their instructions.

| Device untied from account | Reset to factory settings | The only thing left is to search the IMEI through the police or the operator. |
| The service writes "The device offline" | Phone's off or discharged | Wait until the phone turns on (for example, when recharging), and update the service page. |
| It's impossible to erase data. | Outdated version of MIUI or Google restrictions | Try using Mi Find Device instead of Google Find My Device (or vice versa). |
β οΈ Warning: If you see the phone moving (coordinates change), DO NOT try to pursue it yourself.
