When you don't find your smartphone in your pocket or on your desk, it always causes panic, especially if you suspect a theft. For owners of Xiaomi, Redmi and Poco devices, there are powerful ecosystem tools that allow you not only to track the location of the gadget, but also remotely lock it or erase data.
In this article, we will take a look at all the search methods available, from the manufacturer’s official cloud services to IMEI tracking through the police, learn how to act in the first minutes after a loss, what commands can help with search, and why Google’s standard methods are not always effective when combined with the MIUI shell or HyperOS.
Use of Mi Cloud for tracking
The most effective and native way to search is to use the Mi Cloud service. If the stolen device was signed in to Xiaomi Account and enabled the option “Find the device”, you can control the smartphone remotely through any browser, this method works even if the phone is in sleep mode, provided that there is an Internet connection.
To get started, you need to go to the official cloud storage site and log in under the same account as the missing gadget, the system automatically determines the model of the device and shows its last known location on the map, the accuracy of the determination depends on the quality of the GPS signal and the presence of cell towers nearby.
⚠️ Warning: If thieves turn off their phone or pull out SIM-It's not going to be possible to map the location in real time, but it's going to show the last point where the device was online.
In the Mi Cloud interface, you will have three basic controls: “Sound”, “Block” and “Erase”; the sound function will allow you to turn on a loud signal even if the phone is in silent mode, which is useful when searching within the apartment or office; locking the screen will prevent access to your personal data, and erasure is an extreme measure that will delete all files without the possibility of recovery.
Search for Google Find My Device
An alternative and often more accurate tool is Google’s Find My Device, which, because the Android operating system is deeply integrated with the search giant’s services, works on any smartphone that logs in to a Google account. Unlike the Xiaomi cloud, it uses Google’s geolocation, sometimes giving a more detailed picture.
To do this, go to the service's website and log in to your profile, you'll see a list of all the devices associated with your account, select the phone you want from the list, and the system will try to contact it, and if the device is online, you'll see its current coordinates with high accuracy.
- 📍 Location: Shows a point on the map indicating the time of the last data update.
- 🔒 Lock device: allows you to set a new password for the lock screen and display a message with a contact number on the screen.
- 🗑️ Clean the device: completely deletes all data, after which the search becomes impossible.
It's important to understand that when you use the Clean feature, you lose the ability to track your phone further, so you should only resort to this method if there is no hope of returning the gadget, but you need to protect banking applications and personal photos.
The “Find the Device” function in the MIUI settings
In modern versions of MIUI firmware and the new HyperOS, security settings are placed in a separate menu where you can control access to the device in detail, and this is where a key feature that allows you to remotely control the smartphone is activated, without first activating this mode, neither the Mi Cloud nor other methods will work fully.
You can check the status by going to the Settings menu. → Mi Account. → Find the device. Make sure the switch is in the active position. SIM-maps, which is important for the function of the search after replacing the SIM.
There is an important feature of this function in conjunction with IMEI. If the thief tries to insert a new one SIM-card, the service can send a notification to the reserve number specified when registering an account, this gives an additional chance to find out the new phone number of the attacker.
⚠️ Warning: Search does not work if the phone was completely reset to the factory’s Hard Reset before the theft or if the device never connected to the internet after turning on.
Checking device activity and movement history
If your phone has been stolen recently, it makes sense to check your account activity history, Google and Xiaomi log the devices you logged in from, which helps you know if the attackers accessed your data from another gadget while you're trying to find the main one.
To view the story, go to your Google account’s security settings in the “Your Devices” section, which displays all smartphones, tablets, and computers that have access to mail or cloud storage. If you see an unfamiliar device, immediately terminate the session and change your password.
| Parameter | Where to find out | What does it mean? |
|---|---|---|
| Last entrance. | Mi Cloud / Google Account | Time of last data synchronization |
| Location | Map on search service | Geographic coordinates of the device |
| Battery charge | Interface Mi Cloud | Remaining percentage of energy (if available) |
| Network | Connection status | Wi-Fi or mobile data (3G/4G/5G) |
| Time. | Log of events | Moment of last activity |
And by analyzing this data, you can tell whether the phone is moving or static, and if the dot on the map has not changed for several hours, it may have been thrown away or it is in a place without a signal, and then you should focus on locking the data.
Actions when the phone is turned off or the lack of a network
The most difficult situation is when the phone is stolen and it is immediately turned off or in an uncoated area (“dead zone”), in which case standard real-time tracking methods are powerless, since at least a minimum network signal is required to transmit coordinates.
But don’t despair: Xiaomi’s current smartphones and Google’s services are deploying offline device search features through a Bluetooth network of nearby devices. If another Android user with Bluetooth enabled passes by your lost phone, their device can anonymously transfer the coordinates of your gadget to the cloud.
