Losing a smartphone is stressful, especially if it holds important data, photos or access to accounts. Xiaomi owners have the advantage of integrating several geolocation tracking tools into MIUI firmware. But how do you use them when the phone is turned off, discharged or stolen? In this article, we will examine all the working ways of Xiaomi search, from official services to little-known features that are not written in the instructions.
It's important to understand that search performance depends on three things: battery status, Internet access (mobile or Wi-Fi), and geolocation activity on the device. Even if the phone is still motionless, it can be detected at the last fixed point, which is something that many people forget. And if the attacker resets, the chances of returning the gadget plummet, so you need to act quickly and on a checklist.
We analyzed real-world user cases from 2023 to 2026 (including the Redmi Note 12, POCO X5, and Xiaomi 13T models) and identified 5 methods with varying degrees of reliability: some require pre-tuning, others work without even preparation, starting with the most obvious β but often ignored β step.
1. Official Mi Cloud service: search through Xiaomi account
Mi Cloud (i.mi.com) is the first tool that the owner of the lost Xiaomi should check, it works on the principle of Find My Device from Google, but with advanced features for devices on MIUI. The main condition is that the phone must be enabled with a Xiaomi account (even if you did not use the cloud!) and permission to geolocate.
How to check:
- π Go to i.mi.com and log in with the same account as you do on your phone.
- π In Devices, select the missing smartphone. If it's online, you'll see its current location on a Baidu Maps map (for China) or Google Maps (for global versions).
- π Click Play Sound β the phone will emit a loud signal (works even in silent mode!).
- π Option Lock device will allow you to set a password on the screen, if it was not.
Limitations of the method:
- β‘ The phone must be connected to the Internet (Wi-Fi or mobile network).
- π΅ If the device is turned off, the service will show the last known point (up to 24 hours).
- π After resetting the settings (Hard Reset) binding to the Xiaomi account is saved, but the geolocation is turned off.
βοΈ What to do if the Mi Cloud doesnβt show your phone
β οΈ Note: In 2023, Xiaomi tightened its privacy policy, now two-factor authentication is required to use the Mi Cloud on new devices (Xiaomi 14, Redmi Note 13 and later). If you havenβt set it up, access to geolocation may be limited.
2.Google search "Find Device": an alternative to Mi Cloud
If you havenβt used a Xiaomi account but you have a Google account login, use Find My Device, which is less accurate for Xiaomi than Mi Cloud, but has its advantages:
- π± It works on all Android devices, including POCO and Black Shark.
- π Shows your travel history (if you have enabled the location chronology function in Google Maps).
- π΄ Can delete all data from your phone remotely (useful for theft).
Instructions:
- Go to Find My Device and log in to your Google account.
- Pick the missing device from the list. If it's online, you'll see its location with an accuracy of 10 to 50 meters.
- Use the options: Play back sound β 5 minutes at full volume. Protect the device β lock with a message on the screen (for example, βReturn for a rewardβ). Erase data β full reset to factory settings (irreversible!).
An important caveat: if a phone has custom firmware (like LineageOS or Pixel Experience), Google may not work (CN-Version: Block Find My Device by default.
3. Hidden MIUI functions: search by IMEI and network data
Few people know, but MIUI has built-in tools to track your phone through IMEI and mobile network data, which are not as obvious as the Mi Cloud, but sometimes save in critical situations.
Search through the operator (by IMEI)
Each smartphone has a unique identifier, IMEI. If you know it (you can look at it on a box or in a check), contact your mobile operator (MTS, Beeline, Tele2, MegaFon).
- π‘ Track the last base station to which the phone was connected (accuracy - up to 1-3 km).
- π« Block it. IMEI on your network (will not allow the attacker to use the SIM card).
How to request data:
- Find the IMEI (type *#06# or look at the sticker under the battery).
- Write a statement in the salon or through the online chat operator (attach a copy of the passport and document to the phone).
- Expect a response up to 3 working days (free for subscribers).
β οΈ Note: In Russia from 2026, operators are required to provide data on the location of the device on the Internet. IMEI This service may be restricted to individuals only at the request of law enforcement agencies. IMEI remain accessible.
3.2. the Anti-Raid function in MIUI (hidden menu)
Starting with MIUI 12, there is a hidden Anti-Theft feature in the firmware that allows you to track your phone even after you reset your settings.
- π Xiaomi account was turned on on the phone.
- π± The device was not unlocked through the Mi Unlock Tool (for bootloader).
How to check:
- Go to Xiaomiβs personal account.
- In the Devices section, find the missing phone and click Anti-Theft Control.
- If the feature is active, you will see the option to Track the device (works even after Hard Reset!).
This feature is little documented, but confirmed by users of the Redmi K50 and Xiaomi 12 in 2023.The main drawback is that it only works on devices with global firmware (not for the Chinese versions).
What to do if your phone is stolen abroad?
Third-party applications: when official methods do not work
If Mi Cloud and Google don't help, you can try third-party services, they're less reliable, but sometimes they work. Importantly, don't install suspicious programs, many of which collect data or contain viruses. We tested 3 of them.
| Service | How it works | Pluses | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lost Android | Remote management through SMS-team | It works without the Internet (by SMS), can turn on GPS | Requires pre-installing, complex interface |
| Cerberus | Hidden tracking with a thief's photo | Can take a photo through the front camera, record sound | Paid subscription (~$3 per month) not working on MIUI 14+ |
| Prey Anti-Theft | Tracking over Wi-Fi and mobile network | Free for 3 devices, cross-platform | Low geolocation accuracy requires adjustment |
If the phone is stolen and you suspect that the attacker has disabled the Internet, Lost Android is the best option: it can turn on GPS over SMS. Cerberus is suitable for long-term monitoring, but it needs to be installed in advance.
Important: Before using third-party services, revoke their Google/Xiaomi account after a search. Many apps continue to collect data in the background.
π‘
If you lose your phone often, set Cerberus up in advance and set up a hidden mode. The app won't show up in the menu, but will send coordinates on request.
5.Looking for a phone that is turned off or discharged
The most difficult situation is when the phone is turned off or discharged, in which case neither Mi Cloud nor Google will show the actual location.
- π Last known dot: check Mi Cloud or Google Maps for your travel history. Even if your phone is turned off, you'll see where it was last.
- πΆ Operator's network logs: As mentioned earlier, the operator can provide data on the last base station (accuracy is enough for a city search).
- π Bluetooth search: If your phone is lost at home or in the office, use another device (such as the Xiaomi Band or laptop) to scan your nearest Bluetooth devices. Xiaomi defaults on Mi Bluetooth, which can βglowβ even when the screen is off.
If your phone is discharged but lying nearby (such as in your car or at work), try the following method:
- Take a second Xiaomi device (or ask a friend).
- Enable Device Search Mode in Settings β Connections β Bluetooth.
- Click Search Nearby β If the lost phone is within a 10-20-meter radius, it may show up in the list.
β οΈ Note: On Xiaomi models with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor (such as Xiaomi 13 Ultra), Bluetooth search only works if the lost phone is powered on. Otherwise, the Bluetooth module turns off when the discharge is below 5%.
6 What to do if your phone is stolen: Steps to lock and refund
If you are sure that your phone is stolen, follow the algorithm:
- Lock your device through Mi Cloud or Google Find My Device. Set a message on the screen with your phone number (e.g., "Reward. Call +7XXX").
- Change the passwords of all accounts (social networks, mail, banks) that were linked to the phone.
- Please contact the police. Provide: IMEI phone; Check or box (proof of ownership); Screenshot from Mi Cloud with the latest geolocation.

Importantly, if the phone was unlocked through Mi Unlock, it's almost impossible to get it back, because the attacker could flash custom firmware and bypass all the locks, in which case all that remains is the IMEI lock and the hope of the police.
According to statistics from Xiaomi Russia for 2023, 37% of stolen phones are returned to owners due to geolocation, another 12% - through IMEI locking (thieves abandon the devices because they become useless).
π‘
If your phone is stolen, don't try to contact the thief yourself, it's dangerous, turn over all your data to the police and go through official channels.
7 How to Prepare Your Phone in Advance: Loss Prevention
The best way to find a phone is to prepare it for loss in advance, and here's a checklist of things to do right now:
βοΈ Xiaomi Preparing for Possible Loss
Additional advice:
- πΈ Backup photos and contacts regularly in Mi Cloud or Google Drive, so you wonβt lose data even if you donβt find the phone.
- π Set up two-factor authentication for your Xiaomi account β this will protect you from hacking when you steal.
- π² Enable the option to Allow Remote Unlock in Settings β Password and security (will help unlock your phone if you forget your password).
Xiaomi models with MIUI 13+ have the feature βApproach to Miβ (Settings β Xiaomi Account β Device Linking). If you turn it on, the phone will be linked to your account even after resetting, which will make it harder for thieves to do.
