When a favorite gadget is lost or stolen, it always causes panic, but it is increased significantly if the device is turned off. Many Xiaomi owners mistakenly believe that when the battery is discharged or forced to turn off the trackers stop working, and the gadget becomes “invisible.” This is not quite true: modern technology and preinstalled services allow you to leave a digital trail even after the screen is gone.
Search effectiveness depends on whether the smartphone has transferred its coordinates to the network before the shutdown, as well as on the security settings that were activated in advance. If you previously linked your Mi Account account and enabled geolocation, the chances of returning the property are significantly increased, but there are a number of nuances associated with the version of the MIUI firmware or the new HyperOS that dictate the rules of the game.
In this article, we will look at all the available tracking methods, from standard cloud services to specialized methods for searching for a unique identifier. We will not rely on luck, but use proven algorithms of actions that will help to localize the device or at least protect your personal data from prying eyes.
Find the device in the Mi Cloud
The very first and basic tool to use is Xiaomi’s built-in security system.Mi Cloud service is deeply integrated into the shell and operates at a low level of the system, allowing it to transfer data even when the connection is unstable. To access the search functions, you will need any computer or other smartphone with Internet access and a browser.
Go to the official cloud storage site and log in using the same Mi Account that was active on the lost gadget. If you have enabled Find Device in your phone settings (usually active by default when logging in), the system will try to determine the last known location. It's important to understand that if the phone is turned off, you will see the point on the map where it was when it was discharged or turned off.
The service interface has three critical options that can work if the device suddenly turns on or goes into power saving mode with data transfer:
- 📍 Location Search – shows the last time-bound point on the map.
- 🔊 Sound signal – makes the phone make a loud sound even if it is in silent mode (works only when the device is on).
- 🔒 Blocking – remotely locks the screen, preventing an attacker from accessing your data.
⚠️ Note: Wipe Data should only be used as a last resort, and once activated, location tracking will become impossible even if the phone is switched on.
☑️ Checking the readiness of the Mi Cloud
It's worth noting that new versions of HyperOS have improved cloud algorithms, and now the system tries to send coordinates in the background more often, which increases the accuracy of the "last point." If the map shows a location that matches the location of your loss, immediately contact the police without trying to pick up the phone yourself.
Using Google Services for Tracking
An alternative and often more efficient way is to tap into the Google ecosystem: Because the vast majority of Xiaomi smartphones run on Android, they are constantly synchronized with the search giant’s servers. Google’s Find Device service has its own location caching mechanism.
To start, go to android.com/find or search for “where is my phone” or log in to the Google account that was the main one on the lost gadget. The system will show you a list of all the devices associated with that email. Choose the right smartphone from the list. Even if the device (offline), Google will show you the time when it last peaked.
The advantage of Google’s method is to work with Google Maps, which often have a more detailed history of movements if the appropriate option was enabled in the account settings. You can view Timeline to understand the route of the phone before it was turned off.
What if Google can’t see the device?
It also allows you to remotely lock your device by changing the screen unlock password, or display a message with a contact number to contact the finder, especially if the phone is simply forgotten somewhere in a public place and has already been found by employees of lost things.
Search by IMEI code through police and operators
When software methods are powerless, heavy artillery comes into play, a search for the unique IMEI hardware identifier, which is stitched in each communication module and does not change when you flash or reset your settings, and you can find it on a smartphone box, on a warranty card or on a check from a store.
You can't track your phone by IMEI through satellite or cell towers, which is technically impossible without access to operator equipment, but you can initiate lock-and-search through official channels, and you need to file a police report of theft or loss.
In the application, be sure to indicate:
- 📄 The exact model of the device and its color.
- 🔢 IMEI code (can be taken from the box).
- 📅 Approximate time and place of loss.
After the application is registered, the police make a request to the mobile operators, if a new one is inserted into the phone. SIM-The card, the operator will record the event and transmit the coordinates of the tower to which the device is connected, which is the only legal way to find the phone that is turned off, which will later insert the SIM card.
| Method of searching | Internet on the phone is required | Device on is required | Efficiency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mi Cloud | Yes (for coordinate updates) | Preferably. | High (with GPS enabled) |
| Google Find My Device | Yes. | Preferably. | High (accuracy of Google Maps) |
| Search by IMEI (Police) | No (works through towers) | Yes (at least briefly) | Medium (takes time) |
| Antivirus applications | Yes. | Yes. | Depends on the app. |
💡
Searching by IMEI is only effective if the phone is switched on and inserted SIM-card, so the report to the police should be written as soon as possible.
Third-party applications and antiviruses
If you have a smart third-party security app installed, your chances of success are greatly increased. Software like Kaspersky Internet Security, ESET Mobile Security, or Cerberus often have their own hidden monitoring mechanisms that can work independently of Xiaomi’s system services.
Many of these apps have a Hidden Camera feature, or a photo-sending feature when you fail to unlock it, and some of them can send coordinates. GPS through SMS or email on shift SIM-cards, even if the phone itself is in sleep mode, but not completely turned off (for example, if the battery is dead, but there is a minimum charge in the buffer zone).
To verify the availability of such protections:
- 🛡️ Remember if you have previously installed antiviruses.
- 📧 Check your email for notifications from security services.
- 💬 Look at the history. SMS on another phone, did not receive messages with coordinates.
⚠️ Warning: Do not try to install new search apps on your account remotely — if the phone is turned off, the installation command will not pass.
Special attention should be paid to Xiaomi’s own applications, such as Security, which are system-based. They can send device status reports to the cloud whenever a network appears in the short term. Check Settings → Passwords and Security → Authorization and Locking in your account on another device to see the security status.
Actions with complete battery discharge
The most common situation is when the phone is turned off because of a dead battery, in which case the device cannot physically transmit GPS signals or connect to cell towers, but this does not mean that you should give up. Your task is to intercept the moment when the phone is on charge.
Attackers often turn off stolen phones to keep a charge or hide a location, but sooner or later the device will have to be charged. In this brief moment between turning on and locking the screen (or logging in), the phone may have time to send a packet of data with coordinates.
What you need to do right now:
- Do not change passwords from your main accounts (Google, Mi, Social Networks) immediately if you have hope for a return. Changing your password can de-log your device and it will stop transmitting geo-location.
- Activate the “Lost Device Protection” mode in your Google account, which will block the phone from strangers. PIN-code, but will keep the tracking active.
- Monitor email. Notifications of new logins or password reset attempts may include IP-address where the area can be approximately determined.
It is important to understand the difference between “off” and “discharged.” In today’s Xiaomi, at zero discharge, some components can remain in minimum power mode (if provided by hardware and firmware), waiting to connect to the charger to automatically turn on and transmit the SOS signal.
Data protection and account blocking
If the search drags on and it becomes clear that you won’t see the phone turned on, the priority shifts from finding a gadget to protecting personal information. Your photos, correspondence and access to banking applications are much more valuable than the smartphone case itself.
The first step is to remotely lock the screen. In Mi Cloud or Google Find My Device, set a complex password that will block access to the menu. Even if the phone is turned off, the next time it is turned on, it will require this password or the account to which it was associated (activation lock).
Further, it is necessary to protect financial instruments:
- 🏦 Block it. SIM-card via operator app or support call so that scammers don’t use number to confirm transactions.
- 💳 Contact banks to block mobile apps or reissue cards if your phone has Apple Pay/Mi Pay/Google Pay.
- 🔑 Change passwords from critical services: mail, cloud storage, instant messengers.
Remember, after the Wipe command, the phone will return to factory settings, which will delete your photos and contacts, but also remove the tracking capability, so only use this feature when the hope of a return is lost and the main goal is to prevent data leakage.
💡
Keep the smartphone box safe, with an IMEI sticker and a barcode that police and operators need to use, and take photos of that data immediately after you buy it.
