Losing a smartphone is stressful, especially if it holds important data, photos or access to accounts. Xiaomi devices have some unique search tools, but their effectiveness depends on the presets and current condition of the phone. If you read this article after you go missing, immediately go to the section "Emergency Actions." If you want to prepare in advance, learn preventive measures that will increase the chances of returning the gadget.
Unlike the iPhone with its Find My or Samsung with its SmartThings Find, Xiaomiβs ecosystem uses a combination of its own services (Mi Cloud) and integration with Google, which means that even if the phone is turned off, it can be tracked under certain conditions. For example, in China, search functions are different because of local constraints, and we'll look at all scenarios, from the simple loss of a house to theft of a home. SIM-card.
1. Check the obvious places: 3 steps before panic
According to Xiaomi, 42 percent of phone losses are false alarms: under the pillow, in the pocket of the jacket, or between the seats of the car.
- π If you have a Xiaomi Smart Speaker or a laptop with synchronized contacts, use it. Turn on speakerphone, you may hear a vibration sound.
- π Check the latest location in Google Maps (if location history is enabled). Open the chronology and see where the phone was last.
- π Use smart devices. If you have a Mi Band, Xiaomi Watch or other gadgets related to your phone, check their apps - sometimes they store data about the last connection.
If your phone is connected to the Mi Home ecosystem, try sending a command via an app, for example, you can turn on Missed Call Mode, which will cause the phone to emit a loud signal even in silent mode.
2. Search through Mi Account: the official way Xiaomi
Mi Cloud is the primary tool for finding lost Xiaomi. It works if:
- π± The phone has Mi Account enabled (you have logged in at least once).
- π Internet access (via mobile network or Wi-Fi).
- π Phone is on (or off recently β up to 24 hours ago).
To use the service:
- Go to i.mi.com and log in with the same account as you do on your phone.
- Select the Find Device tab (or βFind the deviceβ in the Russian version).
- The map will show the last known location, and if you're online, you'll see the current location of the phone with an accuracy of 5 to 50 meters.
Additional features of Mi Cloud:
| Function | Description | Does it work with the phone off? |
|---|---|---|
| Call. | The phone will give a loud signal (even in silent mode) for 5 minutes. | β No. |
| Lockdown | You can set a password on the screen if it was not. | β Yes (on next inclusion) |
| Deletion of data | Deletes all files from your phone (irreversibly!). | β Yes (when connected to the network) |
| Display of the message | Your text will appear on the lock screen (for example, a number for communication). | β Yes (on next inclusion) |
π‘
If the phone is turned off but has been connected to Wi-Fi or mobile network in the past 24 hours, Mi Cloud will show its last location, but the coordinates may be inaccurate (for example, the city center instead of a particular house).
Important: If your phone is stolen, DO NOT use the deletion feature right away. Try tracking it first, because it won't be possible to reset it once it's been reset.
Google Find My Device: An Alternative for All Android
If Mi Account doesnβt help (e.g., youβre not logged in to your phone) or your phone doesnβt show up in Mi Cloud, use Google Find My Device. It works on all Android devices, including Xiaomi, provided:
- π The phone is linked to a Google account.
- πΆ Geolocation Services and Device Search enabled in Google Settings.
- π The phone is on and connected to the internet.
Instructions:
- Go to www.google.com/android/find and sign in to your Google account.
- Select the lost device from the list (if there are several).
- The service will show you the location on the map. If you have an online phone, you can:
Call to the device (5 minutes)
Password-locking screen
Displaying the message on the lock screen
Deletion of all data-->
Google Find My Device is often more accurate than Mi Cloud, as it uses data not only from GPS, but also from nearby Wi-Fi points, as well as Google Location History (if it is enabled).
What if your phone doesnβt show up in Google Find My Device?
4. If the phone is turned off: what can be done?
The most difficult scenario is when the phone is discharged or turned off intentionally (for example, a thief), in which case the standard search methods do not work, but there are workarounds:
- π Last known location: Both Mi Cloud and Google Find My Device keep the last point where the phone was online. Check it out -- maybe it's still there.
- π‘ Operator network: Contact your mobile operator (e.g. MTS, Beeline, MegaFon) and request the last connection of the phone to their towers:
β οΈ Note: Operators provide this data only upon official request (sometimes through the police), be prepared to present your passport and document of purchase of the phone).
Another option is to use IMEI (Unique Phone Identifier), which you can find:
- On the phone box (usually under a barcode).
- In a check or a warranty card.
- In phone settings (if there is a backup): Settings β About phone β General information β IMEI.
With IMEI, you can:
- Contact the police to lock the phone in the operator database (this will make it useless for a thief).
- Check the device on sites like SNDeeP (Stolen Gadgets Base).
π‘
Even if the phone is turned off, donβt lose hope: the next time itβs turned on and connected to the network, it can transfer its location to Mi Cloud or Google, so check search services periodically for a week.
5. Phone theft: What to do first?
If you are sure that your phone has been stolen (for example, it was ripped out on the street or it went missing with your bag), act quickly:
- Block it. SIM-Call the operator (support numbers are usually listed on their website) and ask them to temporarily block the card, SMS and mobile Internet.
- Change passwords. Your phone could have saved logins from social networks, email, banking apps, and change passwords on all important services, especially if you've used auto-sign-in.
- Report the theft by providing the IMEI with the phone, which will increase the chances of finding the device and returning it.
What NOT to do:
- β Trying to negotiate with a thief (if he contacted you) is dangerous and rarely leads to a phone return.
- β Remotely delete data if you have a chance to track your phone.
- β Posting reward ads without first locking your phone β this can attract scammers.
β οΈ Warning: If a thief has changed Mi Account on your phone, you will lose access to search features. To avoid this, immediately after the theft, lock the device via Mi Cloud or Google Find My Device.
6. Third-party search apps: do they work?
Google Play and Mi App Store have dozens of phone search apps, including Cerberus, Prey Anti Theft, Lost Android, and others, but their effectiveness is questionable for several reasons:
- π They require pre-installing, and if the app hasn't been installed before it's gone, it's useless.
- π΅ They don't work without the Internet. Like standard services, they depend on a network connection.
- π΅οΈ Some apps ask for too many permissions, which is risky for privacy.
If you still want to use third-party software, we recommend Cerberus β it allows you to:
- πΈ Take a photo from the front camera (to see the thief).
- π Turn on the beep at full volume.
- π Track location even after resetting (if the application is installed as a system).
But remember, no app guarantees a phone will be returned if it's turned off or in airplane mode, and should be considered as an additional tool.
7.Prevention: How to prepare your phone for possible loss?
The best way to find your phone quickly is to set it up in advance, and here's a checklist of activities that will increase your chances:
Enable Find your device in Mi Account (Settings β Mi Account β Mi Cloud β Find your device)
Activate Geolocation Services and Device Search in Google Settings
Set a password/pattern lock on the lock screen
Save your phoneβs IMEI in a safe place (e.g., in Google Keep notes)
Set up data backup in Mi Cloud or Google Drive-->
We also recommend:
- π± Add an alternate number to restore to Mi Account (Settings) β Mi Account β Security β Phone number for recovery).
- π Link email to your Xiaomi account (if you havenβt used it).
- π‘ Enable the transfer of location data in the background for Google Maps.
If you have an NFC phone (such as the Xiaomi 13 Pro or Redmi Note 12), you can pre-configure the Mi Smart Tag, a small key fob that will help you find the gadget within a radius of 10β30 meters via Bluetooth.
