Why Xiaomi Passwords Are Not Stored Where You Think
Have you ever tried to remember a password from an old account that you haven't used in a long time? In Xiaomi smartphones (including Redmi and POCO), the saved passwords are scattered across the system -- and that's not always obvious. Unlike the iPhone, where everything is centralized in "Passwords and Accounts," in MIUI, data can be stored in a browser, an account manager, or even in hidden system files.
The main problem: Xiaomi does not offer a single βPassword Storageβ by default, instead, passwords are distributed among:
- π Google Smart Lock (if you use Google Services)
- π Browsers (Chrome, Mi Browser, Firefox)
- π± MIUI Account (for applications and system functions)
- π Third-party managers (Keepass, 1Password, if established)
In this article, we will look at all the official and hidden ways to access saved passwords, including those that are not written about in the standard instructions (PIN-code, fingerprint, etc., and others can only work on certain versions MIUI.
Method 1: Passwords from Google Chrome and other browsers
If you use Google Chrome as your primary browser, the majority of passwords are stored in Google Password Manager, which works on all Xiaomi smartphones, regardless of model (Redmi Note 12, POCO X5, Mi 11, etc.), as it is tied to a Google account, not to firmware.
To see the saved passwords:
- Open Google Chrome.
- Slip on three dots in the upper right corner β Settings.
- Select Passwords (may be called Password Management in newer versions).
- Enter. PIN-phone code or confirm your fingerprint.
Here you will see a list of sites with logins and passwords.
- π Passwords are synced between devices if Sync is enabled in your Google account.
- π« If the password is not displayed, you may have disabled saving in Chrome settings (Settings) β Passwords. β Saving passwords).
- π In Mi Browser (standard Xiaomi browser), passwords are stored separately β see Method 3.
π‘
If you donβt see the password you want in Chrome, try going to the site and entering any character in the login/password field β the browser can offer autocomplete with saved data.
Method 2: MIUI System Password Storage (Hidden Partition)
MIUI 12/13/14 has a hidden password store for system applications and some third-party services, which is accessed through Security Settings, but the path depends on the firmware version.
Instructions for the latest versions:
- Open the Settings. β Passwords and security.
- Go to Password Management (or the Account Storage in MIUI 14).
- Enter the pattern lock/PIN or use biometrics.
What can be found here:
| Type of data | Where it's stored | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi passwords | System storage | Saved networks at home/at work |
| Application passwords | MIUI Account | Entrance to Mi Cloud, Theme Store |
| Autofill data | Google Services | Addresses, card numbers (if included) |
Important: In some regional versions of MIUI (e.g. India or Europe), this section may be called differently or hidden. If you don't find it, check through the settings (the magnifier icon at the top).
What to do if the "Password Management" section is not available?
Method 3: Passwords in Mi Browser and other standard applications
Mi Browser is the standard browser on Xiaomi smartphones, and it saves passwords separate from Google Chrome.
- Open Mi Browser.
- Tap it on three points. β Settings β Confidentiality and security.
- Select Saved Passwords.
- Confirm access via biometrics or PIN.
Features of this method:
- π± Passwords are not synced with other devices (stored locally only).
- π If you reset your phone to factory settings, that data will be lost.
- π¨ In some versions MIUI Passwords are encrypted with a key tied to the Mi Account β without it, recovery is impossible.
In addition to the browser, passwords can be stored in:
- π§ Mail Mi Mail (if you use the built-in application)
- π¬ Mi Community (Forum of Xiaomi)
- π΅ Mi Music (for premium accounts)
Open Mi Browser|Go to Settings β Confidentiality|Find the section "Saved passwords"|Confirm access with biometrics|Export backup copy (optional)-->
Method 4: Export passwords through Google Password Manager (web version)
If you don't have access to your phone but you have a computer, you can view passwords through the web version of Google Password Manager.
- π You are logged into the same Google account on your phone and PC.
- π Password synchronization enabled (Google Settings) β Account management β Security β Passwords).
Instructions:
- On your computer, open passwords.google.com.
- Sign in with the same account as on your phone.
- Enter your Google account password (if you need two-factor authentication, code it).
- You will see a list of all saved passwords with the ability to filter by site.
Advantages of this method:
- β Access from any device (even if your phone is lost).
- β Possibility of exporting passwords to CSV (setting β three-point β Β«ExportsΒ»).
- β View the history of password changes (if enabled).
π‘
Google Password Manager is the most reliable way to back up passwords, as data is stored in the cloud and protected by two-factor authentication.
Method 5: Third-party password managers (if installed)
If you use third-party apps like 1Password, Keepass, Bitwarden or LastPass, all passwords are stored in their own repositories.
- Open the application manager.
- Unlock it with a master password or biometrics.
- Use the built-in search to find the right password.
Comparison of popular managers for Xiaomi:
| Annex | Free version | Synchronization | Integration with MIUI |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bitwarden | Yes. | Cloud. | Autofill is working |
| 1Password | No (14 days trial) | Cloud. | Requires manual adjustment |
| Keepass2Android | Yes. | Local/Cloud | No autocomplete. |
Note: Some managers (e.g. LastPass) may conflict with MIUI Optimization, a feature that limits application background activity. If autocomplete doesnβt work, add a manager to Settings β Applications β Special Rights β No restrictions.
π‘
To speed up access to passwords, add a manager widget to the home screen, for example, in Bitwarden you can create a shortcut to quickly search for passwords.
Security: How to Protect Your Save Passwords in Xiaomi
Accessing passwords is always a risk. Xiaomi smartphones have several layers of protection, but they need to be configured correctly:
1. Encryption of the password store:
- π Enable device encryption: Settings β Additionally. β Encryption and credentials.
- π± Link biometrics (face/fingerprint) to unlock passwords.
2. Restriction of access to managers:
- π« Disable the installation of applications from unknown sources (Settings) β Annexes β Special rights β Installation of unknown applications).
- π Update regularly MIUI Applications and Applications β New Versions Closing Vulnerabilities.
Backup:
- βοΈ Export passwords from Google Password Manager to CSV and store the file in an encrypted archive (for example, in Mi Cloud or Google Drive).
- π For local managers (like KeePass), back up your database to an external drive.
β οΈ Note: If you sell or transfer a phone, be sure to follow the Settings β Additionally. β Reset the settings before deleting the Mi Account. Otherwise, the new owner will be able to recover some of the data, including passwords, through the Mi Cloud.
Frequent problems and their solutions
You can't always access passwords the first time, but here are some common mistakes and ways to fix them:
1. "Passwords don't show up in Chrome":
- π Check if password saving is enabled: Chrome β Settings β Passwords. β Saving passwords.
- π Make sure you are logged in to the correct Google account.
- π± Reboot your phone β sometimes syncs βhangΒ».
2. "I can't enter the MIUI vault:"
- π Try resetting the pattern lock through Settings β Lock screen β pattern lock β Forgot the pattern lock (requires a Mi Account).
- π§ If you forget your Mi Account password, restore it at account.xiaomi.com.
3. "After the phone was reset, the passwords were gone":
- βοΈ Check if sync with Google is enabled (Settings) β Accounts. β Google β Synchronization).
- π If you used a third-party manager, restore the backup from the cloud or file.
β οΈ Warning: On phones with an unlocked bootloader, password storage can be vulnerable to hacking. If you're not a developer, don't unlock the bootloader unless absolutely necessary.
