You plugged Xiaomi into a charger, you put on the screen the usual charging animation or battery icon, but the battery percentage is not growing โ or even falling. The situation is familiar to many owners of Redmi, POCO or Mi smartphones. What is the reason for this behavior and how to return the device to normal operation?
This problem can occur on new models (Xiaomi 14, Redmi Note 13 Pro+) and on devices from 2018 to 2022 (Redmi Note 9, POCO X3). 80% of cases are due to a faulty cable, a contaminated connector or a software failure. But sometimes the root of the evil lies deeper โ in a power controller or a worn-out battery. We will analyze all possible scenarios, starting with the simplest solutions.
1. Checking of charger and cable
The first thing to rule out is power supply problems, and even if the charging light is on, it doesn't guarantee that current is actually going into the battery.
- ๐ Try another charger. Use the original power supply from Xiaomi (for example, on the 18W, 33W or 67W โ If you don't have one, take a certified Quick Charge adapter. 3.0/4.0 or PD (Power Delivery).
- ๐ฑ We're testing the cable. USB-cable from a set or a qualitative analogue (for example, with markings) USB-IF). Cheap cables often have damaged power veins, which is why the phone "sees" the connection, but the current does not pass.
- ๐ Check on another device. Connect the charger to another smartphone or tablet. If it's not charging, the problem is with the adapter or the cable.
Pay special attention to the USB-C connector on your phone. Often dust accumulates inside, collars from covers or contact oxidation. Take a flashlight and inspect the port: if you see foreign particles, carefully remove them with a wooden toothpick (not a metal object!).
โ ๏ธ Warning: Never use cotton jacks or cotton swabs to clean the jack, as the villi can stay inside and make the problem worse.
Diagnostics of program failures
If the cable and adapter are fine, but Xiaomi is still not charging, the reason may be a malfunction in the MIUI operating system.
- ๐ Reboot your phone. Hold the power button for 10 to 15 seconds until the device turns off, then turn it on again. Sometimes this helps to reset the power controller's temporary errors.
- ๐ฑ Activate Safe Mode. Press the power button, then hold your finger on the "Stop" option, and you will be prompted to switch to Safe Mode. In this mode, all third-party applications are disabled, which helps to identify conflicting software.
- โ๏ธ Reset charging settings. Go to Settings โ Battery โ Battery settings โ Resetting battery statistics. This will clear up the charging cix data that may have been damaged.
If the phone is charging in safe mode, but not in normal mode, the problem is in one of the installed applications.
- ๐ Battery optimization applications (e.g. AccuBattery, Greenify).
- ๐ฎ Launchers and shells (e.g. Nova Launcher, Microsoft Launcher).
- ๐ก๏ธ Antivirus or cleaners (e.g. Clean Master, 360 Security).
Remove suspicious programs and check the charging again. If it doesn't work, move on to the next step.

3. Battery problems: wear and bloating
The average lifespan of the lithium-ion batteries in Xiaomi smartphones is 2-3 years (or 500-800 charge cycles). If your phone is older, the battery may have degraded.
- ๐ Rapid charge drop (from 100% to 0% in a few hours).
- ๐ฅ Overheating of the phone when charging or using.
- ๐ Bloating of the body (seen by the "open" back cover or screen that "steps away" from the frame).
Check the status of the battery through the hidden menu of engineering settings:
- Open the Phone app and enter the code ##4636##.
- Go to the Battery Information tab.
- If you look at Health, if you see Good, battery's fine, if Unknown, Replace soon, or numbers below 80 percent, you should change it.
Critical warning: if the battery is swelling, stop using the phone immediately. The bloated battery can ignite or explode when heated!
| Symptoms. | Probable cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Phone shows charging, but percentage doesn't rise | Battery wear (capacity < 60%) | Replacement of the battery in the service center |
| Charging is only possible when the phone is turned off. | Failure of the power controller | Firmware or motherboard repair |
| The phone is warming and discharged quickly | Battery bloating or background processes | Diagnostics in the service + resetting settings |
| The swelling is in progress (it stops and goes) | Poor contact in the connector or cable | Cleaning the connector or replacing the cable |
4. Resetting and flashing
If previous methods have not worked, it may be the firmware that is the problem, and failures after a MIUI update or incorrect recovery from the backup can lead to errors in the operation of the power controller.
- ๐ Reset to factory settings. Go to Settings. โ The phone. โ Resetting settings โ Erase all data. Attention: this will delete all files, photos and apps! Pre-backup through Settings โ Additionally. โ Backup and reset.
- ๐ฅ Update MIUI. Check for updates in Settings โ The phone. โ System update: Sometimes charging bugs get fixed in newer versions of firmware.
- ๐ ๏ธ Fastboot flashing. If the phone doesn't charge even after resetting, you may need to completely reinstall the firmware, you'll need a computer, Mi Flash Tool, and your model's official firmware (download en.miui.com).
Instructions for firmware through Fastboot:
- Turn off the phone.
- Press Volume Down + Power to enter Fastboot mode.
- Connect the device to your PC and start the Mi Flash Tool.
- Select the downloaded firmware (file with.tgz extension) and click Flash.
โ ๏ธ Warning: Continuous interruption of the firmware process can turn the phone into a brick. Make sure the laptop is connected to the network and the cable is securely connected.
What if the phone doesnโt turn on after the firmware?
5. Hardware malfunctions: power controller and connector
If the software methods failed, the problem is likely hardware, and Xiaomi smartphones charge:
- ๐ Connector. USB-C โ It may be physically damaged or oxidized.
- ๐ Power controller (part of motherboard) โ manages current distribution.
- ๐ Food chains - breaks or short circuits on the board.
Self-diagnosis:
- Connector check: Connect your phone to your PC. If your computer can't see the device, but it's charging, the problem is the data (D+/D- veins). If you don't charge or transmit, the power contacts (VBUS/GND) are damaged.
- Multimeter test: If you have a multimeter, measure the voltage on the connector contacts when you connect the charger. Normal values: ๐ด VBUS (last-minute) โ 5V (or 9V/12V fast-charging). โซ GND (mid-range) โ 0V.
The absence of voltage indicates a fault of the cable, adapter or controller.
Repairing hardware malfunctions requires special equipment (sweeping station, microscope) and skills. If you are not confident in your abilities, you should contact the service center.
- ๐ง Replacement of the connector USB-C โ 1 500โ3 000 โฝ.
- ๐ Replacement of the power controller โ 3000-8000 โฝ (model-wise).
- ๐ Restoration of food chains โ 2000โ5,000 โฝ.
๐ก
If the phone only charges when it's off, it almost always indicates a power controller malfunction. Don't delay repairs - over time, the problem may worsen and the phone will stop turning on altogether.
Alternative charging methods
If standard charging does not work, you can try alternative methods:
- ๐ Wireless charging: Xiaomi models with Qi support (e.g. Xiaomi 13 Pro, Mi 11 Ultra) can be charged wirelessly. If the phone responds to wireless charging, the problem is precisely the connector or cable.
- ๐ Charging through OTG. Put it on the phone. OTG-This is not a method that works on all models, but sometimes it helps to bypass a faulty connector.
- ๐ง Direct battery connection. Power users only! You can gently solder the wires from the charger directly to the battery contacts (polarity!) This is a temporary emergency charging solution.
If neither method works, the last option is to replace the battery or repair the board at the service center. For Xiaomi models older than 3 years, this is often economically impractical (the cost of repair can exceed 50% of the price of a new phone).
๐ก
Wireless charging is the best way to diagnose it, and if the phone is charging wirelessly, but not through the cable, the problem is exactly with the USB-C connector or its circuits on the board.
7. Prevention of charging problems
To avoid repeated problems, follow these guidelines:
- ๐ Use original or certified chargers. Cheap adapters can damage the power controller.
- ๐ฑ Keep the battery in full discharge, the optimal charge range is 20-80%, full discharge (0%) and overcharging (100%) accelerate battery wear.
- ๐ฅ Avoid overheating. Do not charge your phone in direct sunlight or during resource-intensive tasks (games, video editing).
- ๐ Clean the connector regularly. Remove dust and debris from the port every 2-3 months. USB-C.
It is also useful to disable charging optimization in MIUI settings if it is enabled:
- Go to Settings โ Battery โ Battery settings.
- Turn off the option "Adaptive Charging" or "Optimized Charging".
These features limit the charging current to extend the battery life, but sometimes work incorrectly and cause failures.
