Why Google Play Services is so much less expensive for Xiaomi
Did you notice that your Xiaomi battery goes down in a few hours, and Google Play Services is the number one power user? It's no accident โ it's a massive problem, and it's related to the features of MIUI and the integration of Google services into firmware. Unlike pure Android, where com.google.android.gms are optimized for standard devices, on Xiaomi they often conflict with the background processes of the system, especially if:
You have a global firmware (e.g. MIUI Global or EEA) that is deeper than the Chinese versions.
You use Xiaomi with a MediaTek processor (Redmi Note 11/12 series, Poco M4/M5), where drivers are less optimized for background tasks.
The phone activated geolocation, push notifications or auto-update applications through the Play Market.
According to XDA Developersโ tests, on some Xiaomi models (such as the Redmi Note 10 Pro or Xiaomi 11T), Google Play Services can consume up to 20-30% of charge per day even in standby mode, the reason being aggressive synchronization with Google servers, which MIUI does not always correctly limit, but the good news is that the problem can be solved without root rights and loss of functionality.
How to Check if Google Play Services Are Really at fault
Before you start settings, make sure that the problem is in com.google.android.gms, and not in another application.
- Open Settings โ Battery and Performance โ Battery Use
- Click on the three dots in the top right corner and select Usage Statistics (or Details in newer versions of MIUI).
- Check how much percent of the charge Google Play Services have been eating in the last 24 hours, and if the number is above 10-15%, the problem is confirmed.
Also, pay attention to the activity schedule: if Google Play Services is constantly waking up (there will be frequent peaks on the chart), then they are blocking the phone from going to deep sleep. This is typical for Xiaomi with MIUI 12.5 firmware and later, where aggressive battery optimization sometimes works against the user.
Method 1: Limiting background activity (without rut)
The safest method is to manually restrict Google Play Services through MIUI settings, which does not require root rights and is suitable for all Xiaomi models on MIUI 11 and later.
Instructions:
- Go to Settings โ Applications โ Application Management.
- In the search bar, type in Google Play Services and select the app.
- Press Battery Consumption โ Limit background activity.
- Choose Limit and confirm the action.
Google Play Services will not be able to run arbitrarily after that, but some features (such as real-time geolocation or push notifications) may be delayed.
Are there any push notifications (Viber, Telegram, mail)?
Does geolocation work in Google Maps?
Arenโt the games with authorization coming out via Google?
Is the synchronization of contacts and calendar preserved?-->
โ ๏ธ Note: Some Xiaomi models (e.g. Redmi Note 8 Pro or Mi) 9T) Google Pay may stop working after the background is limited. If you use contactless payments, this method is not for you.
Method 2: Disabling unnecessary Google services
Google Play Services is not just one app, but a whole host of modules, many of which can be disabled without losing core functionality, for example, if you don't use Google Fit, Google Play Games or ARCore, you can deactivate them.
How to do this:
- Install the App Inspector (or Package Name Viewer) app from the Play Market.
- Find all packages starting with com.google.android.gms.
- Disable unnecessary modules through Settings โ Apps โ Show all applications (see by name from the inspector).
List of safe to disable services (if not used):
- ๐ฎ com.google.android.gms.games โ Google Play Games (only for games)
- ๐ com.google.android.gms.fitness - Google Fit (fitness tracker)
- ๐ com.google.android.gms.location โ Google geolocation (you can turn off if you use only Yandex.Maps)
- ๐ค com.google.ar.core โ ARCore (Augmented Reality)
โ ๏ธ Warning: Don't turn off com.google.android.gms completely! This will cause the system to crash. Also, don't touch modules with the words auth, security or update in the title - they are critical for Android to work.
What happens if you turn off all Google services?
Method 3: Resetting cache and data from Google Play Services
Sometimes high battery consumption is associated with a damaged cache or data conflict, and resetting helps in 60% of cases (according to the 4PDA and Mi Community forums).
How to reset:
- Go to Settings โ Applications โ Application Management โ Google Play Services.
- Press Warehouse. โ Clear the cache.
- Then click Clear Data (this will delete all temporary files, but will not affect your account).
- Reboot the phone.
Once reset, Google Play Services will automatically reinstall when you next connect to the Internet, a method that is particularly effective if the problem has occurred after the MIUI or Google Play Services update.
๐ก
If data accumulates again quickly after reset (over 1 GB per week), try turning off automatic app updates in the Play Market: Settings โ Network Preferences โ Auto-Update apps โ Never
Method 4: Using ADB for deep optimization
If previous methods didnโt work, you can manually disable Google Play Services auto-run via ADB (Android Debug Bridge). This is a more radical way, but it doesnโt require root rights and works for all Xiaomis.
Instructions:
- Install ADB Tools on your computer.
- Turn on USB Debugging on your phone (Settings โ About Phone โ MIUI Version โ 7 times click on the version, then go back to Additional Settings โ For Developers).
- Connect your phone to your PC and type in the command line: adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.google.android.gms/.update.SystemUpdateActivity adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.google.android.gms/.update.SystemUpdateService adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.google.android.gms/.chimera.GmsIntentOperationService
- Reboot the phone.
These commands disable background updates and unnecessary Google Play Services services, but retain basic functionality (such as Play Market and notifications).
adb shell pm enable com.google.android.gms| ADB Team Team | What's off? | Effects of consequences |
|---|---|---|
| disable-user com.google.android.gms/.update.SystemUpdateActivity | Auto-update of Google services | Updates will have to be installed manually. |
| disable-user com.google.android.gms/.chimera.GmsIntentOperationService | Background tasks for notifications | Push notifications may be delayed |
| disable-user com.google.android.gms/.nearby.NearbyService | Nearby (search for devices nearby) | Google Find My Device will not work. |
Method 5: Transition to alternative services (for advanced services)
If youโre willing to sacrifice some of Googleโs functionality, you can replace some services with Xiaomi or third-party counterparts, a radical method, but it gives you a 15-25% increase in autonomy (according to GSMArenaโs tests on Xiaomi 12 Pro).
What can be replaced:
- ๐ง Gmail โ Mi Mail or FairEmail (without background synchronization)
- ๐บ๏ธ Google Maps โ Yandex.Maps or OSMAnd (offline maps)
- ๐ต YouTube Music โ Mi Music or VLC
- ๐ Google Search โ Bing or DuckDuckGo (in the browser)
The main advantage is that these applications do not depend on Google Play Services and do not run them in the background, and the disadvantage is the loss of some features (for example, Google Assistant or Google Pay).
๐ก
Before you completely abandon Google services, check if important data is tied to your account (photos in Google Photos, notes in Keep, purchases in Play Market).
Method 6: Install custom firmware (for experienced)
If nothing has worked, and the battery continues to run out in a few hours, the last option is to reflash the phone on custom firmware without Google services (or with their stripped-down version).
- ๐ฑ LineageOS โ โpureโ Android without unnecessary background processes.
- ๐ง Pixel Experience โ Firmware with optimized Google services.
- ๐ Xiaomi.EU โ modified MIUI battery-operated.
Advantages of custom firmware:
- โก Full control over background processes.
- ๐ Optimized core for saving charge.
- ๐ ๏ธ The ability to disable unnecessary Google modules at the system level.
Disadvantages:
- โ ๏ธ Loss of warranty (if the phone is under warranty).
- ๐ง Risk of "bricking" if installed incorrectly.
- ๐ฑ Some functions (such as Widevine) L1 for Netflix HD) They may stop working.
If you do, follow the instructions on the XDA Developers forum for your model. For most Xiaomi, the firmware process looks like this:
- Unlock the bootloader through the Mi Unlock Tool.
- Install custom recovery (TWRP or OrangeFox).
- Sweep through the selected firmware and GApps (the minimum package of Google services, if necessary).
