Xiaomi Redmi 8 is one of the most popular budget smartphones of the brand, but even it is not immune to problems with charging. If your device began to charge 2-3 times longer than usual, it may be not only a worn-out battery. In this article, we will analyze all possible causes, from banal contamination of the connector to hidden firmware errors that slow down the process.
If the phone is charging slowly from day one, the problem is almost certainly the power supply or the cable, but if the speed has slowed over time, get ready for a deeper diagnosis, and we collected data from 4PDA forums, Mi Community and service centers to identify the most common bottlenecks of Redmi 8 charging.
1. Problems with the power supply or cable
To start with, 90 percent of slow-charging complaints are solved by replacing a charger or cable. Redmi 8 supports Quick Charge 3.0 (up to 18 watts), but only when using an original or certified adapter. If you connect your phone to a cheap nouneim power supply, the charging speed can drop to 0.5-1 A instead of the required 2-2.5 A.
How do you check?
- ๐ Connect your phone to another power supply (preferably original from Xiaomi or Redmi labeled) MDY-11-ED or MDY-12-ED).
- ๐ฑ Install the AccuBattery app (free on Google Play) and check the current charging current in the Charging section โ Speed.
- ๐ Examine the cable for bending, melting, or damage to the squirt โ even microcracks can reduce conductivity.
Note that if you use wireless charging, the speed will always be lower than cable. Redmi 8 does not support Qi-standard out of the box, so wireless charging requires a special adapter โ and it rarely delivers more than 5 watts.
2.Contamination of the USB-C connector or contact oxidation
The Redmi 8 USB Type-C connector is one of the most vulnerable, and over time, it gets stuffed with dust, pocket pile, particles from covers, and contacts can become oxidized due to moisture, which leads to unstable contact and a drop in charging current.
How to clean the connector yourself:
- Turn off the phone and remove it. SIM-memory-card.
- Take a toothpick or plastic spatula (NOT metal!) and carefully remove visible debris.
- Soak the cotton swab in isopropyl alcohol (90%+) and wipe the contacts inside the connector. Don't use water!
- Let the phone dry for 10-15 minutes before connecting the charger.
What happens if you clean the connector with metal objects?
If the charging speed has not recovered after cleaning, try wiggling the cable slightly in the connector while charging. If the current jumps (as seen in AccuBattery), then the problem is mechanical wear - you will need to replace the connector.
Battery wear: how to check and what to do
The Redmi 8 has a 5,000 mAh battery (BM47 or BM48) and averages 500 to 800 full charge cycles, after which it starts to drop, and if the phone is in use for more than 2-3 years, the probability of battery wear is closer to 70 to 80 percent.
Signs of a worn-out battery:
- ๐ The phone is discharged in 3-4 hours with moderate use.
- โก Charging is jerky: the current then falls to 0.1 A, then jumps to 1.5 A.
- ๐ก๏ธ The body heats up during charging (over 40).ยฐC).
- ๐ AccuBattery shows Battery Health is below 70%.
How to check the status of the battery without third-party applications:
- Enter the code in the phone app: ##4636##
- Go to the section Information about the battery.
- Look at the charge level (should match the indicator in the status bar) and the condition (if Good, but the phone discharges quickly - the battery requires calibration).
๐ก
If the battery health in AccuBattery shows 60% or lower, and the phone turns off at 20-30% charge - do not waste time on "recovery". The only solution is to replace the battery (cost ~ 1,200-1,500 rubles with work).
| Battery health (%) | Symptoms | Recommendations |
|---|---|---|
| 85โ100% | Normal wear, charging is stable | Keep using, keep track of the temperature. |
| 70โ84% | Fast discharge, slow charging at the last 20% | Calibration of the battery, reducing the load |
| 50โ69% | Phone turns off at 15-30%, warms up when charging | Battery replacement soon |
| Below 50% | Does not hold a charge, charges at 5-10% per hour | Urgent replacement! Risk of battery bloating |
4. Software failures: cache, background processes and MIUI errors
Sometimes slow charging is not about hardware, but about software conflicts, like background processes that can load the processor, which artificially restricts the charging current to avoid overheating, or the power saving settings that have been set off since the MIUI update.
What can be done:
Clear the system cache in Settings โ Memory โ Cleaning |
Disable battery optimization for system applications |
Reset the MIUI Battery Saver| settings
Update the firmware to the latest version|
Reset to factory settings (if nothing helps)-->
Pay special attention to the energy saving settings:
- Go to Settings โ Battery and Performance โ Battery Mode.
- Choose High Performance (Temporary, for the test).
- Turn off Adaptive Charging (if enabled) โ it can artificially slow charging down by the last 20%.
If after these manipulations the charging speed increased, the problem was incorrect settings MIUI. To fix the result, update the firmware through Settings โ About the phone โ System Update.
๐ก
After major MIUI updates (e.g., version 12 to version 13), the power saving settings are reset. Always check the battery settings after the upgrade!
5.Overheating phone: why it slows charging
The Redmi 8 is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 439 processor that is prone to overheating at high loads. If the body temperature exceeds 40-45 ยฐ C, the system automatically reduces the charging current to avoid battery damage. This is protection, but it is also the culprit of slow charging.
What causes overheating:
- ๐ฎ Long gaming sessions (PUBG Mobile, Genshin Impact).
- ๐น Video recording in 1080p streaming.
- โ๏ธ Direct sunlight or hot weather (+25ยฐC and above).
- ๐ Use of cheap chargers without protection from overheating.
How to cool your phone:
- Remove the case (especially if it is dense or silicone).
- Close all background applications through Recent โ Close everything.
- Place your phone in the shade or near the fan (NOT in the fridge!).
- Use a cooling stand (if you play).
๐ก
If the phone heats up even in plain, check the thermal paste between the processor and the body. In Redmi 8, it often dries up after 2-3 years. In the service, it will be replaced for 500-800 rubles.
Charging controller malfunction
If you've ruled out all the previous causes, but the phone still charges slowly, the problem may lie in the power controller (BQ25896 or similar), which is responsible for the distribution of current between the battery and the system, and if it malfunctions, charging can be jerky or even stop by 80-90%.
Signs of Controller Failure:
- ๐ The phone does not detect the charger (writes "charging is not going").
- โก Charging current jumps from 0.1 A to 2 A for no reason.
- ๐ Charging stops at a certain percentage (most often 80-90%).
- ๐ฅ The phone suddenly shuts down when connected to a charger.
It's a hardware problem, and it's almost impossible to solve it on your own.
- Diagnostics on specialized equipment (for example, DC Power Supply).
- Controller soldering or replacement (cost ~ 1,500-2,500 rubles).
- Check the power chain for short circuits.
โ ๏ธ Warning: Don't trust the charging controller repair to "handicraft" workshops! Incorrect soldering can cause the battery to burn or the phone to fail completely.Look for a service with a minimum 6-month warranty.
7.Influence of covers and external accessories
You might think that a case can affect the charging speed? In fact, it's very much so! Dense or thick cases (especially silicone or metal inserts) can:
- ๐ฅ Increase the effect of the greenhouse, which causes the phone to overheat.
- ๐ถ Block antennas, causing the phone to spend more energy searching the network.
- ๐ Press the connector. USB-C, worsening.
Do an experiment:
- Remove the case and connect the phone to the charger.
- Run AccuBattery and compare the charging current with and without a case.
- If the difference is more than 20%, the cover is to blame.
The same goes for safety glasses, and cheap metalized film can interfere with wireless charging (if you use it) or impair signal reception, which indirectly affects power consumption.
8 Hidden MIUI settings that slow charging
MIUI has a few "secret" features that can limit charging speeds, like Ultra Battery Saver mode or Adaptive Charging settings, and even if you didn't consciously enable them, they could be activated after the upgrade.
Where to look:
- ๐ Settings โ Battery โ Battery mode โ Choose High Performance.
- โก Settings โ Battery โ Settings โ Adaptive charging โ turn off.
- ๐ Settings โ Special facilities โ Optimizing the battery โ disconnect for system applications.
Also check the restrictions for applications:
- Go to Settings โ Applications โ Application Management.
- Select All Apps and search Google Play Services, MIUI System, Security.
- Press the Battery and select No Limits.
โ ๏ธ Warning: Disabling Adaptive Charging can shorten battery life by 10 to 15 percent, but it will return charging speed to normal!
