Smart appliance owners often face a situation where the purchased device has an interface only in English or Chinese, especially for models ordered from foreign stores. Many users immediately begin to look for ways to translate into Russian a Xiaomi vacuum cleaner without an application, hoping for hidden combinations of buttons. Unfortunately, in modern models of Xiaomi, Roborock and Vacuum, the software shell is rigidly tied to the selected account in the region.
Physical buttons on the device body usually have only two functions: turn on/off and start cleaning. In rare cases, there is a back to base or local cleaning button. Localization of the interface is completely dependent on the software settings that are transmitted over Wi-Fi. So "reflash" the language just by pressing buttons on the case is technically impossible on any current version of the firmware.
However, there are workarounds to Russification, which can include changing the region in the official app, using alternative software, or even completely resetting to factory settings on the first activation. Below we will go through all the available methods in detail and explain why some models do not support Russian in the first place.
Why the buttons on the body do not change the language
The first thing that a smart tech owner needs to understand is the IoT device management architecture: a robot vacuum cleaner doesn't have its own full screen or complex navigation menu that can be flipped through with buttons. All settings, including language selection, are stored in a cloud profile or local cache synchronized through the server.
When you press a combination of buttons, like holding home and on, you most often initiate a Wi-Fi module reset or system reboot. The physical interface is solely for basic control in case of loss of communication with the phone. Old models like the Xiaomi Vacuum 1, had primitive voice packets, but they switched only through the app.
โ ๏ธ Warning: Long-term button retention (more than 10 seconds) on most Xiaomi models leads to forced reset of network settings or a full Factory Reset.
There's a myth that a certain sequence of taps can activate a hidden engineer's menu, but in mass-produced consumer electronics, these menus are either deleted or blocked. Even if you manage to enter diagnostic mode, you'll only find sensors, battery power and engine errors, but not a change in language pack.
The official method of changing the region in Mi Home
The most reliable and secure way to get a Russian interface is to properly configure the region in the Mi Home app. The language of voice and text notifications depends on which country's server is selected in the user profile. If you choose "China", the robot will speak Chinese, even if the phone's menu is in Russian.
First, you need to untie the device completely. Go to the robot settings in the app, scroll down and select Remove the device. Then press and hold the buttons on the vacuum cleaner case (usually Home and On at the same time) for 5-7 seconds until you hear a voice message about the Wi-Fi reset.
โ๏ธ Preparations for regional change
Now, follow the following steps to change the region:
- ๐ Open the Mi Home app and go to the profile (the "My" tabยป).
- โ๏ธ Click on Settings (cog icon) and select Regionยป.
- ๐ท๐บ In the list of countries, select โRussiaโ or another country with the desired language (e.g. Germany or the United States).
- ๐ The application will restart, after which you can add a robot vacuum cleaner again.
It is important to understand that if you change region to Russia or Europe, you may face a limited functionality, and some models designed for the Chinese market (CN Version) may stop working or not be defined in the European region, in which case you will have to find a compromise between language and functionality.
Use of alternative applications
If the official Mi Home app doesnโt work, or if the device is stubbornly defined as a Chinese version, you can try third-party software. Developers have created several utilities that can interact with the Xiaomi and Roborock protocols, offering more flexible localization settings.
One popular solution is the VacuumZ app (for Android) or the Home Assistant (for advanced users), which often have built-in translations and allow you to control the device, ignoring the regional limitations of the Xiaomi cloud, but require that the robot and the phone be on the same local Wi-Fi network.
Comparison of management applications
The table below shows the differences in language support and function between the main management methods:
| Parameter | Mi Home (Of the Region) | Mi Home (China) | VacuumZ/Alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|
| Interface language | Russian | Chinese/English | Russian/English |
| Voice packets | Depends on the model. | Chinese/English | Depends on the software. |
| Stability | Tall. | Tall. | Medium |
| Access to maps | Complete. | Complete. | Limited. |
Using third-party software is always a risk, and developers of such applications do not have official access to the Xiaomi API, so at any time the connection can be disrupted by a firmware update on the manufacturer's side.
First activation and discharge method
There's a nuance that's often overlooked: the language of the device is often frozen the first time it's activated. If you turn on a new robot vacuum cleaner when the Mi Home app selected China, the device downloaded the corresponding language pack. Just changing the region in the phone's settings after that may not be enough.
To fix this, you need a full factory reset, it works differently on different models. The Xiaomi Vacuum S5 and S50 series need to press the Home and On buttons at the same time. The Roborock S6 and newer models often require three buttons to be pressed or the combination Power + Local Cleanup.
The deep reset procedure looks like this:
- Make sure the vacuum cleaner is at least 20% charged.
- Press the desired combination of buttons for 10-15 seconds.
- Wait for the voice message "Resetting to factory settings" (or similar in Chinese).
- Remove the device from the list in the Mi Home app.
- Change the region in your profile to โRussiaโ.
- Re-interconnect the device.
โ ๏ธ Warning: After resetting, all the stored maps of the premises will be removed. You will have to re-build the map and adjust the virtual walls. Make sure the floor in the room is clean so that the robot does not get confused when first building the map.
This method does not work for all models; some firmware versions, especially on devices for the domestic Chinese market, may not have Russian voice packets in their memory at all, in which case the reset will return the device to a factory state with Chinese or English, but will not add Russian.
The Chinese Version Problem (CN Version)
Global versions (often labeled "Global" on the box or in the model name, such as the S50 Global) have multilingual support in firmware, including Russian. Chinese versions (CN Version) are originally intended for the domestic market and may not contain Russian audio files and texts.
If you have purchased CN-The version, then to translate it into Russian by software methods, most likely, will not work. In the memory of the controller simply do not have the necessary localization files. Attempts to โreflashโ global firmware on a Chinese device can lead to bricking (complete inoperability) of the gadget, as hardware identifiers (Hardware) ID) may not match.
๐ก
How to tell the difference: If you look at the sticker on the bottom of the device, if it says "Model: S50-02" or if it says an importer (like "Made for Russia"), it's a global version. If it's written only in Chinese and it's like "S50-00" or "S50-01," it's a Chinese version.
What to do if you have a Chinese version:
- ๐ฌ๐ง Confront English (almost all versions of it).
- ๐ฑ Use an interpreter with a function AR, pointing the camera at the phone screen (crutches, but works).
- ๐ ๏ธ Look for enthusiasts who make custom firmware (Valetudo), but it requires programming skills.
When buying Xiaomi equipment, always check with the seller the version of the device. The price difference between the CN and the Global versions can be significant, but the difference in usability for the Russian-speaking user is also noticeable.
Voice control and integration
Even if the interface in the application and voice messages of the robot remained in English, you can interact with the device in Russian through voice assistants. Integration with Yandex.Alice, Google Assistant or Siri allows you to give commands such as โAlice, turn on the vacuum cleanerโ or โStart cleaning in the kitchenโ.
To set up integration with Yandex:
1. Open the Yandex application and go to the Devices section.
2. Click on Add Device and find it in the Xiaomi Home list.
3. log in to your Xiaomi account (importantly, the account region must match the device region).
4. Once anchored, all devices will appear in the smart home list.

Using voice assistants allows you to completely ignore the interface language of the robot itself, controlling the cleaning of voice and through widgets in Russian.
The advantage of this approach is that you don't have to look at the app every time, and the cleaning status, charge level, and errors will also come in the form of notifications from Alice or Google in Russian, regardless of what the robot itself mutters, which partly solves the language barrier problem.
