The situation where Xiaomi’s smart TV suddenly starts to voice every action is familiar to many users, often after accidentally pressing a keyboard combination or as a result of an automatic update to the system that activates accessibility features. Voice support, known as TalkBack or Screen Reader, is designed for visually impaired people, but in normal conditions of watching content it only annoys and prevents you from enjoying movies.
You don't have to panic, because this kind of software failure can be easily fixed through system settings. But the difficulty is that navigating the menu with voice acting on becomes extremely uncomfortable: every click is accompanied by a loud comment, and choosing the right item requires a double click. In this guide, we will discuss all the ways to turn off voice on a Xiaomi TV, returning the usual comfort of control.
There are several ways to solve the problem, from quick keyboard shortcuts to deep customization in the system menu of Android TV. It is important to understand that the interface may vary slightly depending on the version of the PatchWall firmware or the pure shell of Android TV, but the logic of action remains the same for all models of the brand.
Quick way to disconnect via the remote control
The quickest way to bring silence back is to use a special button combination on the remote control. Xiaomi and Google have designed hotkeys for people with disabilities, which are often activated accidentally when cleaning the remote or sloppy handling. If your TV starts talking, try to press the volume buttons Plus and Minus for 5-7 seconds at the same time.
Some remotes, especially older versions of the Mi Remote, can hold a button with a microphone or a home key, and the system must respond by voice-activated message that the TalkBack function is disabled, and if the voice is silent, the problem is solved without having to climb complex menus.
⚠️ Warning: If your voice starts to speak even faster after you press the buttons or your tone changes, you may have accidentally activated Select to Speak.
Importantly, this method doesn’t work on all versions of the operating system. In new Android TV 10 and higher updates, the key combination can be changed or require on-screen confirmation, which is difficult to perform without disabling the voiceover itself.
Configure the TalkBack function in the accessibility menu
If the quick method didn't work, you have to go to the system menu, and the main difficulty here is changing the control logic: with TalkBack on, a single click only highlights an item (it is voiced), and to enter the menu or launch the application requires a double tap on the selected item, moving between the selected elements with a single click to the left or right.
You need to find the Settings icon, and double-click on it, it opens a menu where you can find the Special Features or Accessibility section, and depending on the location of the interface, it can be called differently, but it's usually at the bottom of the list or in the System category.
Inside the section, find TalkBack. The function status will appear as "On" or "On." Click on this item (single click to select, double to log in) and move the switch to "Off." The system can request confirmation of the action, which is also done by double tapping the "OK" button.
☑️ TalkBack's Disconnect Algorithm
Note that in some versions of the PatchWall shell, the path to settings may be hidden in the user profile. If you do not see the desired options in the main menu, try switching to the standard Android TV interface by clicking the menu button on the remote and selecting the appropriate display mode.
Disabling the Google Assistant voice assistant
Users often confuse TalkBack’s accessibility feature with Google Assistant’s active voice assistant, which can spontaneously turn on when you press a separate button on the remote. Unlike voice-over, the assistant waits for commands and can interfere with viewing with its answers or screen highlighting.
To turn off the voice assistant, go to the TV settings and look for the Apps or Accounts section. You will need to find the Google or Google Assistant app. In some cases, it is enough to turn off the assistant button in the remote settings to avoid accidental activation.
A more radical but effective method is to turn off the microphone in your privacy settings, which will prevent you from listening to commands, but also prevent you from controlling your TV with your voice, and to do so, look for the Privacy section in the settings menu and turn off the Voice control option.
| Function | Appointment | How do you get in? | Where to turn off |
|---|---|---|---|
| TalkBack | Voiceover of the interface for the visually impaired | Talks at every click, requires a double click. | Special opportunities |
| Google Assistant | Voice search and management | Turns on the button, distracts with notifications | Application settings |
| Audio Guide | Action description on the menu | Commenting on the transitions on the menu | Special opportunities |
| Text-to-Speech | Synthesis of system speech | Used by other voiceover applications | Special opportunities |
Why does Google Assistant turn on itself?
Managing Speech Synthetist and Language
Sometimes the problem is not with the service itself, but with the text-to-speech speech synthesis settings. If a third-party speech engine is installed on the TV or the wrong language is selected, the system may behave incorrectly, emitting strange sounds or misinterpreting commands.
To check your settings, go to the “Special Features” section and look for “Text-to-Speech output” to make sure your preferred engine is Google Synthesizer or the standard system option. Using third-party voice applications can cause conflicts.
Also check your language settings. If you select a language that doesn't have a quality voice package, the TV may try to use a basic, robotic voice or constantly request data downloads. Set Russian or English as your primary language.
⚠️ Note: Do not remove Google Text-to-speech system components if they are marked as necessary for the system to work.
In rare cases, cleaning the speech synthesis application itself helps, so find Google Text Services or a similar name in the application list, log in and select Clear Data and Clear Cache, which will reset your voice settings to factory.
Resetting special features settings
If none of the above methods worked and the TV continues to voice the actions, there may have been a software failure in the user profile or damage to the configuration files, in which case the effective solution would be to reset special features or completely reset the device.
You can do a soft reset by finding the settings reset option in the Special Options menu (if available in your version of the software), but most often you have to resort to a complete reset of the TV to factory settings. Before you do, make sure you remember the data from your Google account, as after the reset you will need to re-authorize.
To perform the reset, go to Settings → About TV (or System) → Reset. Select Erase everything. The process will take a few minutes, after which the TV will turn on as a new one, without voice accompaniment.
💡
Before a full reset, take a picture of important network settings and lists of installed applications, which will help to quickly restore the work environment after returning to factory condition.
Prevention of Accidental Activation of Voiceover
To avoid a repeat of this in the future, it is helpful to know what actions lead to TalkBack activation, most often by pressing certain buttons for a long time or making specific gestures on the remote's touchpad, and understanding the mechanics will help you be more careful when using the device.
It is recommended to check (regularly) the TV software updates. Newer versions of Xiaomi and Android TV firmware often fix bugs associated with false positives of accessibility features, and manufacturers can also change the hot key combinations for greater security.
If you have young children or older people in the house who have difficulty mastering double clicking, it is better to disable the ability to activate TalkBack via hotkeys in advance. To do this, in some advanced settings (often available through ADB or engineering menus), you can prevent changing the status of the accessibility service without password.
💡
Regularly updating the TV firmware is the best way to avoid software errors that cause spontaneous inclusion of voice support.
